It rained so bad in Atlanta that I almost didn't make it out for the BMI Urban Unsigned Showcase Thursday night, but thanks to strong sets from Novel, Trey Songz and Nas (who rocked the stage for nearly an hour) I'm very glad I did.
While the night was not without it's issues (primarily the poor sound inside ESSO's nightclub) overall the evening was a great opportunity for industry insiders to view new and established talent and network.
Spotted in the building were DJ Green Lantern, Brian Michael Cox, Boyz II Men singer Nathan Morris, Sterling Simms and Mickey Factz, among others.
The night started off with performances from singer Kameron Corvet, rapper Rain, first runner up songstress Ryn Nicole and the evening's winners, 718. The finalists were judged Manny Hailey ( Keyshia Cole and Lyfe Jennings manager) songwriter/artist Sean "The Pen" GarrettJimmy Rosemond (The Game and Pleasure P's manager) music executive Kawan Prather and Leonard Brooks gave the first prize to the only act with choreography -- Brooklyn R&B act 718 (who won over the crowd by starting their dance packed act with the Dream's hit song "Rockin' That Thang") but gave runner up Ryn Nicole (my personal favorite) a $1000 prize straight out of their pockets. Sean Garrett also awarded Lil Jon with the Legends of ATL award.
Novel sang the song I told you guys about "F**k With My Mind," along with "I Am..." featuring Spree Wilson, before ending with a rendition of "Purple Rain"
Trey Songz was up next. He performed both "I Need A Girl" and "Brand New" from his forthcoming album, as well as several previous hits. Both acts got a great response, but it was obvious the crowd was geared up to see Nas -- who did not disappoint. I was happy to hear "One Love," Street Dreams," "One Mic," "If I Ruled The World," "Black President," and his verse off "My President is Black" as part of the extensive set.
Many thanks to Jamil Walker at BMI, as well as Juanita Stephens for inviting me!
First, mothafuckers! Oh fuck it! What's up with thiws first shit anyway?damn!
