Kelly Rowland is indeed leaving her longtime home at Columbia Records, the label and Rowland have released a statement describing their split as mutual and amicable.
The rumblings of a split began yesterday, but today rumors have been confirmed. Grammy-winning R&B/pop superstar Kelly Rowland will no longer be recording with Columbia Records as a solo artist, it was officially announced today by the label.
While Rowland, a founding member of Destiny's Child, will continue her relationship with Columbia Records as part of the group, she will no longer record there as a solo artist:
"Because Columbia Records has been my home base as an artist for more than a decade, the decision to move out on my own required a lot of soul-searching," said Kelly Rowland. "As a solo artist, I felt the need to explore new directions, new challenges, and new freedoms outside my comfort zone and my friends and family at Columbia have been incredibly understanding about my evolution. I want to thank everyone at Columbia for the love and support they've shown and I will never forget how many good times we've had over the years."
The label responded by saying:
"Kelly Rowland is one of our finest contemporary artists and a musical force to be reckoned with," said Rob Stringer, CEO, Columbia/Epic Label Music Group. "It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with Kelly and we will continue our working relationship with her under the Destiny's Child moniker. The decision for Kelly to seek other opportunities for her solo career was agreed upon mutually, and any reports to the contrary are false."
Behind all that nice stuff, you gotta wonder how pretty the situation really is? Things usually tend to get ugly before a label lets an artist out of their contract -- or on the opposite side, the artist gets pretty shut out before being dropped. Either way, Kelly may be better off on a label separate from DC, just as she may be better off with having a different manager than Matthew Knowles. I hope she lands on her feet.
Kelly's solo success is nothing to sneeze at either. She has a Grammy for her song "Dilemma" ft. Nelly, and in addition to selling more than 50 million records worldwide with Destiny's Child, she's has sold over 4 million copies globally of her two solo albums: 2002's Simply Deep and 2007's Ms. Kelly. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she already has a bunch of offers lined up, or even another deal in place.
So so many people lost respect for KElly when she went solo. Not because she has no talent, but due to the fact that she decided to emulate other artists. I hav e no idea what a Kelly Rowland song should sound like.
She tries to be Beyonce with a touch of Amarie with some bits of whoever tossed in. Then you got them fake tits which screamed 'Artistic insecurity" Didnt feel your talent was enough had to get truck headlights installed on a little porsche body.
Wouldnt be surprised if she goes back to gospel. Hopefully she puts all this nonsense behind her and goes the Gladys route. Just sing, move a bit and make good songs, stop dancing your skinny fake titty ass around.
She had to get off. Columbia's budget has already been dedicated to Beyonce.
{{-_-}}
Damn Garbage Man...You went in dawg...But, I was going to do the same thing....Your right... But I don't think she ever sung gospel, that was Michelle..
What's funny about this whole statement is, THAT'S IT'S BULLSHIT!!! Check It, Columbia drops her as a solo artist only....Note that she is still signed to them as a "Destiny Child" member...Columbia aint stupid and Kelly is plain dumb..If this is the best excuse that she or her NEW management came up with, then it's really a rap...Firs you fired Matthew, which I can understand and was a good move, but now this....
She said as a ""As a solo artist, I felt the need to explore new directions, new challenges, and new freedoms outside my comfort zone and my friends and family at Columbia have been incredibly understanding about my evolution"...
So you mean to tell me that being a solo artist on Columbia will not work, but being in a group on Columbia will????? BWHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!
Do they actually think in depth about the excuses or statements that they are going to give before they actually release them???? Reading what I just read, I seriously doubt it..
Nice try though Kelly!
personally, i hope she does indeed land on her feet. i agree that she is sort of a conglomerate of other artists, but her voice is still beautiful. i'd like to see her do well. as a matter of fact, i'm tired of hearing beyonce on the radio everyother second. i'd like to see someone like kelly or michelle get some of that shine as well. as far as what clo-fresh is saying bout leaving as a solo artist, i think you gotta remember that being in a group is much more restricted than being a solo artist. your not making decisions by yourself, but as a group. if your group wants to stay at columbia, then it is what it is. but as a solo artist you have power to branch out and explore. as far as the fake tits go, who in hollywood or the music industry hasn't had some work done. its pretty much an everyday thing with them. its not like she threw some D's on it. she's more of a B.
@ truth be told...I hear what your saying and agree with you for the most part but, please, she's not selling units..It's as simple as that, and that's what it boils down too..If her last album would of went platinum we wouldn't even be hearing this.
It's about time, I hope she can can possibly have a successful career.
WELL IF YOU TIRED OF HEARIN GVOICE DONT TURN ON THE RADIO HATER............ BECAUSE YOU WILL BE HEARING HER FOREVER UNTIL SHE RETIRES AND THAT NOT NO TIME SOON................... SO GET OVER IT AND SHOT YOURSELF................. BEYONCE IS NUMBER 111111111111111111111111111111
i hope she does good. her 2 albums were good albums! if not that DC money aint gone neva run out...unless her and Michelle had some kinda Bad Boy deal and end up broke! but shes good, i just hope she doesnt do a reality show. that aint no money no how!
Hmmm...well, all I can say it u can't go anywhere but up. I mean, Kelly is talented and I do like her voice better than Beyonce's personally - even in DC I was hating how she couldn't get barely any lead vocals. But anyway...I think it's going to take a little more to get her star beaming. Unfortunately, being a member of DC helps but at the same time it doesn't. All the attention was centered around Beyonce and that was blatantly obvious to anyone with sense. So, it's almost a catch 22. I really hope that she's able to bounce back because I didn't really get to hear much of her first album but I was excited about her upcoming success on the solo tip when I heard "Like This". I thought it was a nice breakout song for her....then it was like *crickets*....................so Kelly keep doin' ya thang. Stay creative and open with your ideas but STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF.
