February 2009 Archives

stevie wonder 18.jpg

This week Stevie Wonder was awarded the prestigious Library of Congress Gershwin Award. President Barack Obama himself did the honors of presenting the award.

For all those that said his career was over, she'd be a fool to take him back, he's a monster etc... etc... etc... What do you have to say now that the tabloids are reporting a Chris Brown/Rihanna reunion in Miami?
letoya-luckett-photoshoot-4.jpg

Letoya Luckett released the first single off her upcoming Capitol Records follow-up to radio this week. The song "Not Anymore" was penned by Ne-Yo and the Bryan Barber-directed video was shot in Los Angeles last week.

Hometown hero Jennifer Hudson will visit another Chicago staple, "The Oprah Show" Friday, February 27.

It's that time of week again -- I'm giving you five of the songs I kept coming back to this week, feel free to share yours!
ririnydailynews.jpg

No rest from the paparazzi! Shortly after celebrating her 21st birthday in Los Angeles, Rihanna headed to a private beachside villa in Punta Mita Mexico and of course cameras were there to snap away.

Our good friend Eric Benet sent me this Kyte video from his label offices in Japan.  Check it out:

The countdown has begun for Def Jam's current golden boy (sorry Ne-Yo!) The-Dream, whose Love VS Money album drops in less than two weeks on March 10th.
cm_web.jpg

Def Jam soul singer Chrisette Michele is back one mo' 'gin with her sophomore album Epiphany due out March 31The newly single chanteuse is already back on the charts with a new single and is singing the praises of her labelmate Ne-Yo.
beytonydfront.jpg

I guess Beyonce isn't ready to cover up and play the demure, innocent wife role yet.  I just caught a peep of a few shots from Bey's recent shoot with photographer Tony Duran and knew I had to share with you.
jazmine_sullivan_5751.jpg

Jazmine Sullivan may have come up empty handed at the Grammy's, but the Philadelphia singer's stardom has only continued to rise with her taking on a new role as actress in the Tuskegee Airman film Red Tails.

Every time I turn on the radio Rihanna seems to be playing, and "Take A Bow" appears to be the song of choice, but every newsstand I look at has a tabloid claiming Rihanna and Chris Brown are far from over. Makes you wonder what kind of song Rihanna will be singing next -- and how her fans will feel about it.

beyojackman.jpg

I don't know about you but I was lovin the Oscars last night. The 81st Academy Awards went down at L.A.'s Kodak Theatre Sunday evening and R&B was definitely in the building. After skipping the Grammy's, Beyonce brought her Dereon gown to the show, Alicia showed off what a little hard work in the gym can do for her legs and Queen Latifah delivered just like she always does.

rihanna-umbrella-macys-launch.jpg

Rihanna has spoken! Despite her current rough ride, she's good thanks to her fans.  Her offical statement was released this afternoon.
TierraMarie-1.jpg

My homie Angela Yee at "Shade 45 in the Morning" spoke to former Rocafella/Def Jam singer Teairra Mari yesterday and homegirl spoke on moving to Asylum/Fo' Real/Warner Music Group, her deadbeat dad and her own experience being in an abusive relationship.
rihanna.preview.jpg

By now you've probably seen the TMZ-published photograph of Rihanna considering that its been everywhere. When I saw it yesterday I opted to pass it on to Gyant rather than post it here, because my personal feelings are that it shouldn't have been released.

One of the things I love most about SOHH Soulful is getting to meet new artists who are excited to show the world what they're made of. After hearing her single "From My Heart to Yours" months ago, I finally got the opportunity to meet Irish soul singer Laura Izibor this past Sunday at the Atlantic Records offices in Atlanta. After just a few minutes with her I felt that same excitement about her debut.
drake_patron.jpg

Might hafta be a wrap for all those other rapper/singers... Been bumping the Drake So Far So Gone mixtape for the last few days and felt inspired to freshen up the 5 Songs lineup.
ny-beyonce-solange.jpg

The Knowles girls are living up to their normal reputations, with Beyonce overachieving as usual and Solange... well not so much! Bey is expected to make her rounds at the Academy Awards this Sunday, while Solange should hopefully be fully recovered from her lil "syrup" incident any moment now.

DETAILS magazine put Kanye West on the cover of their upcoming issue, which hits stands February 24th.  If you can look closely you can see the egomaniacal producer/artist's head has gotten even bigger.

charlie_wilson-thumb-473x315.jpg

Charlie Wilson's new album Uncle Charlie drops today February 17th and I had the chance to chat with the iconic Gap Band singer about the new project, his thoughts on the state of music and his battle with prostate cancer.

Say it ain't so! Michael Jacksons pockets are so hurt he's selling some 2,000 belongings in a Beverly HIlls Auction.

fantasia.jpg

Most of us are familiar with Fantasia's life before "American Idol" hard luck story, which includes becoming a teenage mother and dropping out of school, as well as her much publicized bout with illiteracy.
rihannachrisbrown3.jpg

It looks like Chris Brown released his official statement just in time for MTV to update their Monday night special "Chris Brown and Rihanna: Love In Trouble".
KCecard.jpg

Happy Valentine's Day!!! If you are slacking on your pimping, let Keyshia Cole or Robin Thicke make the day special for your boo.

tameka foster.usher raymond.preview.jpg

Details have been released regarding Tameka Foster Raymond's plastic surgery complications, but with Ush and his wife topping the list of couples we love to hate, does anyone care?

love-hate.jpg

In honor of the Hallmark holiday some of us dread and others embrace, I thought we'd play a little game called Love/Hate. Think about it like this, there are artists we love to love, hate to love and love to hate.

Janet Jackson

I desperately need a break from all the Chris Brown and Rihanna chatter so I'm happy to hear that Janet Jackson is not only back in the studio again, but she is working with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis!
400_jhudson_090129_musicvideo_adisanto.jpg

With everyone's favorite (or least favorite) Hallmark holiday right around the corner, I figured I'd dedicate this week's edition of 5 Songs to Valentine's Day -- these are for the lover in you!
jordinchris.jpg

Now that I've got your attention, I'm not proposing that Jordin Sparks is the other woman that set off the Pre-Grammy violence. I just think it's about time we paid some attention to one person who is likely to be feeling the fallout of this Chris Brown/Rihanna crisis in a major way.
D'Angelo

Talk about grown and sexy! One of my all-time favorite artists, D'Angelo turns 35 today and I couldn't resist putting together a little video tribute for him.
albumcover.jpg

The cover art for J. Holiday's sophomore album Round 2 has just been released. And from the looks of it, Holiday is still nursing his same habits.

After being ditched by Def Jam, it's been a hard climb uphill for newly independent artist Bobby Valentino but with his new album The Rebirth in stores today his future is looking bright. Check out the latest Soul Rebel Q&A where Bobby discusses leaving DTP, working with Raphael Saadiq and why he'll never use Autotune.

When Ne-Yo hit the Grammy red carpet Sunday with longtime girlfriend, dancer, Tenille, on his arm, which only created more of a frenzy over whether the two are heading toward the altar soon.
293.Houston.Whitney.020809.jpg

While this year's Grammy Awards were definitely plagued by a whole lotta drama, the bright side of the weekend was having divas Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson both back on the scene in a big way.
Chris Brown

While Chris Brown's golden boy status is in serious jeopardy, past interviews with the R&B/Pop sensation reveal a dark side that's been there since childhood.
rihannaeyepatch.jpg

I don't know about you, but this year's Grammy Awards seemed longer and more boring than any other in history and I'm willing it would have been a completely different night had Beyonce, Usher, Chris Brown and Rihanna graced us with their presence.
2330004.jpg

Neither Chris Brown nor Rihanna will be performing at or attending the Grammy's after the breaking news that Brown is currently under investigation for domestic violence felony battery.
tpain.jpg

Just when you thought T-Pain couldn't get any better, Autotune's current king turned up in Andy Samberg's latest hilarious musical skit this Saturday.
mary_j_blige400.jpg

Mary J. Blige cleaned up at the Grammy's bigtime the last time she dropped an album, but can she capture this year's Best Contemporary R&B album when she's up against Ne-Yo, Jazmine Sullivan and other hot newcomers???
 etta_james_beyonce_bw.jpg

After giving Beyonce the Lil Kim/Naturi Naughton treatment, Etta James is now saying her comments about Bey's inaugural performance were just a joke to entertain the crowd.
neyo7.jpg

The Best R&B song is a songwriters award and not surprisingly, one of R&B's biggest singer/songwriters Ne-Yo is nominated twice. Still the competition is pretty stiff, so there is no telling who will take this one home.
Ryan-Leslie-Approved-Pic-2.jpg

It's that time again.  Check out the 5 songs I've had on my mind all week, and make sure to tell me what you can't stop listening to!
rihannajumpsuit.jpg

Rihanna is one of a select group of artists chosen for a series of official Grammy commercials. In the short clip, the Bajan singer talks about being influenced by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston among others...
Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae, Chrisette Michele, Pharrell protege Kenna and several other artists I don't blog nearly enough about will have their moment to shine at the Grammy's when they face off for the Best Urban/Alternative award.

Jazmine Sullivan

Jazmine Sullivan has proven to be one of the breakout stars of '08, but how will she fare up against the iconic Al Green and longtime favorite Raphael Saadiq in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category?
RS_COVER-resized(1).jpg

This may not be the most glamorous of the R&B categories (let's see if they even televise this one) but you have to admit there are some greats up for the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
neyo7.jpg

As the countdown continues to Grammy Night, it's your turn to weigh in on who should win the Best Male Vocal Performance -- with Usher, Ne-Yo, Eric Benet, Chris Brown and Trey Songz battling it out, there is no telling who will take home the award.

kcsecondvibecover2.jpg

VIBE must really love Keyshia Cole, either that or they just like creating ish for people to talk about because they were nice enough to put her mama on the alternative cover with her.
beyonce-instyle-november-2008-03.jpg

The 51st Grammy Awards are going down Sunday February 8th in Los Angeles so to get y'all in the spirit, this week I'll be putting the shine on all nominees in the R&B category so you guys can choose who the winners should be.
jennifer-10.jpg

Jennifer Hudson made her first televised appearance since her family tragedy to sing the National Anthem for yesterday's Superbowl.
