Songwriter/artist Novel is doing his part to get the word out about Oscar Grant, who was shot to death by a police officer in Oakland this week, by dedicating his song "Mad World" to Oscar and his family.
"I saw the footage on Oscar Grant like the rest of the world and was sadden and shocked by the tragic event that occurred," Novel said via statement. "If you dont know, Oscar Grant was a unarmed young black male shot in the back by an Oakland Police officer. This song is dedicated to him and his family and anyone who lost someone. This is my take on Gary Jules "Mad World". I hope this doesn't offend anyone in anyway for that is not my intention."
As the intro of the song mentions there is currently a video of the incident, which was very upsetting and saddening, but ultimately the reason I decided to do this post today. It's available on YouTube and all across the net if you choose to view it, I'm going to limit the videos I post today to music only.
Mahalia Jackson "How I Got Over"
Another reason I posted Novel's song was because I wanted to discuss protest music, and the way artists can really rally people around a cause. Artists like Miriam Makeba and Mahalia Jackson played a role in getting the world to pay attention to the anti-apartheid and civil rights movements. Between Sean Bell and Oscar Grant an anti-police brutality movement seems to be stirring. Who would be the right voice for such a movement?
U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
Is there a song that could speak for the Amadou Diallous, Sean Bells and Oscar Grants, the same way U2's "Bloody Sunday" spoke for the fallen Irish?
