January 2009 Archives

ciaraneverever.jpg

Fantasy Ride is coming in April and Ciara just launched the video for her Polow Da Don produced single "Never Ever" ft. Young Jeezy.
BBD.jpg

A few months ago I told you that BBD was in the lab working on a new album. Now guess what? I got my hands on what looks like it will be the first single. I can't even tell you how excited I am to share this new BBD record with you!!!
fantasia.jpg

I happened to stumble unto a YouTube video of Fantasia's recent tribute to icon Patti Labelle at the recent UNCF "Evening of Stars"
Jazmine Sullivan

Jazmine Sullivan must love her graphic designer, because he's certainly getting a lot of work.  In addition to this promo artwork and her last video "Bust Your Windows" her latest videos "Lions, Tigers & Bears" makes use of some amazing graphics.
keyshiacolecover1.jpg

Just saw the March cover of VIBE and I have to say I'm feeling a bit WTF-ish... Um, Keyshia Cole? That New Fresh? Are they kidding me???
john-legend.jpg

Here's the Top 5 songs I couldn't get out of my head this week in no particular order.  What tracks are you stuck on?
sogood1.jpg

The jury may still be out on The-Dream and Tricky Stewart's girl group Electrik Red, but Ne-Yo has already cast his vote in favor of the ladies by inviting them on tour as his opening act.
kelly-rowland-newswire-400a062207.jpg

Rumor has it that Kelly Rowland finally grew some backbone and fired longtime manager Matthew Knowles ( aka Beyonce and Solange's Daddy)...
aaliyah2.jpg

Aaliyah fans can begin the countdown for her biopic. Director Bill Condon has started talking about the project and is already comparing it to a critically acclaimed film about another late singer.
thriller2.jpg

You'd be hard pressed to find another song that immediately evokes such a strong string of imagery in the minds of so many, so when I heard that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" may soon be adapted for Broadway I found the idea to be pure genius.
Janet Jackson

It looks like Michael isn't the only Jackson to be hit hard by financial woes. Janet Jackson has opted to postpone several "Rock Witchu" tour dates in Japan due to the current global economic crisis.
dwoods.jpg

Life ain't bad after Bad Boy for former Danity Kane member D.Woods! Your girl Rebel had a chance to chat it up with the MTV reality star on Saturday at Justin's where we were both guests at Amar'e Stoudemire and Grand Hustle's special private dinner. Check out what she had to say.
keyshiapromo2-1.JPG

Keyshia Cole has teamed up with director Benny Boom again for her latest single "You Complete Me".  Check out the video, as well as new joints from J. Holiday and Ryan Leslie below:
Mashonda.jpg

I have some more footage from Mashonda's Lip Service appearance this week, and boy is this a juicy one.
john-legend.jpg

If you thought John Legend only works with the likes of Kanye West and Andre 3000 you might be surprised to hear that Legend recently spent some time in the studio working on a track for Rick Ross.

The-Dream-music-u01.jpg

I'm starting to understand why LoveHate was an appropriate title for The-Dream's last album because while the man definitely evokes a lot of hate, right now I can't help loving his single.
j_holiday.jpg

So it looks like the J. Holiday video I posted last week is not the final cut.  The official vid premieres this Friday on MySpace. In the meantime I have a behind the scenes video you can check out.

aretha.jpg

If you thought Aretha Franklin and Beyonce's faceoff started and ended with those Grammy comments over the "Queen" title you were wrong.
swizz_beatz_mashonda_042408.jpg

R&B singer Mashonda is now speaking openly about confronting producer-husband Swizz Beatz about his infidelity with Alicia Keys.
beyonceclv2.jpg

If we needed any further proof that Beyonce and Jay-Z are real American royalty, just look to the VIP treatment Hov and Queen Bey received last night while leaving rehearsal for Jay's pre-inaugural concert at Warner Theatre.
j_holiday.jpg

Washington, DC native J. Holiday was scheduled to premiere his new video for "It's Yours" this week on MySpace Music, but it looks like it's already hit YouTube.
jennifer_hudson.jpg

Jennifer Hudson is the latest performer to be added to the lineup for the 2009 Grammy Awards, which will be handed out February 8.
beyonceamerica.jpg

With President Elect Barack Obama being sworn into office tomorrow, Washington D.C. is alive with music and much of it will be available to see on television.
Beyonce.jpg

After years of shilling for L'Oreal, Beyonce is now sharing the beauty brand spotlight with little sister Solange. You've probably seen the ad by now on television, but check out the behind the scenes footage:
Faith_Evans_Main_Image.jpg

The NOTORIOUS film hits theaters nationwide today and not surprisingly, the film is bringing a lot of attention to the real life people who were in Biggie's inner circle while he was alive, particularly Faith.
Janet Jackson

While Jermaine Dupri continues to garner attention for getting fired from Def Jam, Janet Jackson isn't exactly quiet on the internet either.  A new Janet track titled "Secret" recently hit the web. Check it out here:
dream7.jpg

Another week has passed and it's time for me to countdown the songs that stayed on my brain. From the picture above it shouldn't be too hard to guess who stuck around this week. Still there was plenty of room for fresh material. Check out my top 5 this week and feel free to post yours.

Kelis and Nas are working on a brand new kind of collaboration...the couple has a baby on the way!
 jamieblameit.jpg

Jamie Foxx has a new single "Blame It" that I already see is gonna be huge in clubs very soon, if it's not already.  As if folks needed anymore reason to blame bad behavior on the bottle!
124.jpg

Add Beyonce and Mary J. Blige to the list of celebrities gracing the capitol for Barack Obama's inaugural festivities.
Christina Milian

Jermaine Dupri isn't the only former Def Jammer ready to move on -- Christina Milian and Teairra Mari are over their Def Jam breakups and have each released a new video this week.

Destinys-Child-The-Writings-On-The-Wall.jpg

Remember when Destiny's Child first stepped on the scene in the late '90's? That newfound excitement about a group of four vocally blessed young beauties overflowing with bubbly energy and untested talent? A similar buzz has gathered around two new singing foursomes, Def Jam signees Electrik Red and Jive's Richgirl, but will the ladies meet expectations? Time will tell.
RyanLeslieCover_LO.jpg

Valentine's Day has got to be a popular time for R&B -- after all, it's the genre where you are most likely to find love, lust, passion and sex (and possibly broken-heartedness) all in one album, so I wasn't surprised at all to learn that Bobby Valentino and Ryan Leslie have both signed up to release their new albums right before V-Day.

jill-scott.jpg

While Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Beyonce don't seem to be having babies any time soon, despite the speculation, go ahead and sign Jill Scott up for some expectant mommy glow. The Grammy-winning singer recently announced she is having a baby with fiance drummer Lil John Roberts.
neyohome_people.jpg

Remember that PEOPLE magazine feature on Ne-Yo I posted about earlier this week? Apparently some of the Def Jam singer/songwriter's words have been taken out of context elsewhere and Ne-Yo took to his MySpace page to set the record straight.
novel_epcoverLO.jpg

Songwriter/artist Novel is doing his part to get the word out about Oscar Grant, who was shot to death by a police officer in Oakland this week, by dedicating his song "Mad World" to Oscar and his family.
yez.jpg

Kanye West is on the cover of next month's VIBE and looking pretty beat as far as cover models go. Sorry Ye'.  The photo isn't quite as flattering as the promo pic (which you can see over at Gyant Scoop) but I did get a chance to look at some of the excerpts and was surprised to read that Kanye's last album narrowly escaped being a mixtape.
Ne-Yo

Welcome to the first installment of 5 Songs for 2009 --  I struggled with whether to go with the songs I literally couldn't escape on the radio (that danged "Diva" for one), my guilty pleasure pop singles (Lady Gaga "Just Dance" is suddenly my ish) or the same old R&B that we were listening to in '08.  In the end I just tried to keep it real, this is what I've been playing. Stick around and tell me what you can't get out of your head.
neyohome_people.jpg

Def Jam singer/songwriter Ne-Yo let PEOPLE Magazine into his home for their upcoming issue, and from the looks of the layout, homeboy likes to spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

keyshiapromo2-1.JPG

Keyshia Cole might have had a little too much fun at her recent New Years bash in Atlanta Friday.  While addressing the crowd, Keyshia got caught on the mic having to esplain herself after her "shout out to Young Jeezy" turned into a public announcement.
rihannacostume.jpg

Rihanna's become just as noticed for sporting her onstage uniform of latex, leather and bondage getup as she's for the designer duds she wears to special events, but the singer is planning to clean up her act for an upcoming show in Malaysia.

jennifer_hudson.jpg

Jennifer Hudson will not be performing for the Obama inauguration after all. A rep for the Oscar-winning actress and "American Idol" alum has spoken out following rumors that Hudson would make her first appearance since the devastating murders of her mother, brother and nephew for the inaugural festivities.
beyonce_mariah.jpg

By now you've probably seen the New Year's Eve pictures of Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Nick Cannon, and L.A. and Erica Reid partying it up in St. Barth's but it turns out that it wasn't all play for the entertainers, particularly Carey, who is rumored to have earned a whopping $1 million to sing a few songs.
SNN0521GX2_280_698285a.jpg

Leave it to the British press to kick off rumors of an engagement.  After spending New Year's Eve together in London Rihanna and Chris Brown are now at the center of speculation that they will be tying the knot.
jennifer_hudson.jpg

OSCAR winner and former "American Idol" star Jennifer Hudson has not performed since the brutal murders of her mother, sister and nephew in October - but the New York Post is reporting she is being wooed for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.
