October 2008 Archives

Keyshia Cole

It's Halloween and one of my favorite dead rappers has been resurrected to appear in a new video.  Yep Tupac is back!  Keyshia Cole has finally dropped the video for "Playa Cardz Right" and I've got it for you.

history_tour_51.jpg

Looks like Mike had to go and pull Jermaine's playa card.  Can't say I didn't see this one coming.  The King of Pop ain't doing the reunion.
dream7.jpg

Along with T-Pain, The-Dream was probably one of the most influential producer/songwriters of 2008.  After a successful outing with his Def Jam debut LoveHate Nivea's ex-husband is gearing up to bring you more of the party ready feel good music that made him so popular this year.
janetjperform.jpg

In addition to losing opening act LL Cool J, Janet Jackson's "Rock Witchu" tour hit several snags this week when she returned to the Palace of Auburn Hills. The R&B/pop icon was asked to rethink some of the sexier stage moves which she performed for an audience that was smaller than expected.

Solange

We may as well call this week the "Slept On Edition" because none of these artists is currently getting as much love as they should or could. Wake Up People! Everyone complains about the state of the music industry and all the commercial b.s. on the radio but when it comes time to support the artists who are working their hardest they seem to just get forgotten.
Eric Benet

It's Wednesday and Eric Benet is back with his weekly video diary.  This week Eric takes us to his polling place after performing his civic duty.

Maxwell
is definitely on the comeback trail. After serving as one of the key voices for R&B's neo soul era, Maxwell is back making music and talking about it as he prepares to return after seven years away from the game.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey just dropped her fourth video off E=MC2 "Stay In Love With You," this time with a Vegas/Showgirls theme.  Husband Nick Cannon directed the video, which depicts Mimi in her usual outfit of next to nothing, prancing around a stage miserably in love yet again.

Christina Aguilera just premiered her video for "Keeps Getting Better," the single for her greatest hits album Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits due out November 11.

keyshia(1).jpg

Keyshia Cole's third studio album, A Different Me, will be released on December 16, 2008. The lead single "Playa Cardz Right" features the late rapper 2Pac. Cole is currently filming the third season of her BET reality series, "The Way It Is" which is set to premiere in November.
Danity Kane

Yikes! Looks like Diddy can't make a band for sh*t.  After giving D. Woods and Aubrey the old heave ho, new reports say Shannon has put in her walking papers and hotstepped it out the group.

Jennifer Hudson

By now we've all heard the details of the horrible tragedy that has devastated Jennifer Hudson and her family. Like many of you, my thoughts and prayers have been with Jennifer all weekend, hoping for the safe return of her nephew Julian King, and the strength to carry the surviving members of the family through this terrible time. While blogs normally seem synonymous with hate, I thought today would would be an appropriate day to think about what songs have helped you through difficult times like the one Jennifer is going through right now.

Keri Hilson - Legs Crossed S.jpg

The video for Keri Hilson's latest single "Return The Favor"has finally dropped. I think it's pretty hot and the vibe she's giving is definitely on par with current divas Beyonce, Rihanna and Ciara so I thought it would be fun to compare Keri's vid with the latest from Ciara "Go Girl". You guys can look forward to a new installment of VERSUS every Friday when I bring you two videos from your favorite artist and you get to decide which one is badder.

MUSIQ_ONMYRADIO (hi-res).jpg

Atlantic Records just sent over this cover for Musiq Soulchild's new album ONMYRADIO. His album hits stores December 9th. Based off the current single and his past albums I'd bet good money on it being a solid one.
Ciara

50 Cent and Ciara can't be too bad off because homegirl showed up on Shade 45 in the Morning with my homegirl Angela Yee. Ang sent me a bunch of audio from this morning's interview where Ciara opens up about her dream to work with Victoria's Secret, her relationship with 50 Cent and confirmation that her album won't be out til 2009. Check out the clips below:

Usher isn't your average vapid self involved narcissistic artist.  No, he's much deeper, so much so that portions of the proceeds from sales of his new song "Hush" will benefit his New Look Organization. The song is a call to action, specifically encouraging young people to participate in community service activities, just as he has, beginning with his Project Restart campaign following Hurricane Katrina and continuing with his New Look nonprofit and his appointment as Youth-Chair of the Service Nation Summit, which was also attended by John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

This week's edition of 5 Songs I Can't Get Out of My Head is inspired by the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards, airing tonight on BET.  Not everyone was a nominee but in some cases, I really felt they should have been. Feel free to list your on 5 songs as you see fit.
lyfe-mugshot1.jpg

Since he's hit the music scene Lyfe Jennings has been such a positive force -- especially when it comes to educating young people about HIV awareness and taking a different path than the criminal one. That's why I was so shocked and disappointed to hear that he was arrested in Cobb County for firing a concealed weapon, trying to elude police and suspicion of DUI.
Keri Hilson - Energy S.jpg

It looks like we may have underestimated the powers of Keri Hilson. Either that or Rihanna just wasn't available to make the video shoot for Kardinal Offishall's "Numba 1 (Tide is High)". You may remember me posting versions of the song with both Rihanna and the Pussycat Dolls, well now it looks like the public at large will be listening to the Keri Hilson version, thanks to the new Gil Green directed video.

BBD.jpg

There has been a whole lotta hoopla over the New Kids On The Block reunion, but I'm wayyy more excited for BBD's return.  I've been in communication with one of their producers, who let me hear a few tracks and I can guarantee you are not gonna be mad at all about this comeback.

kanye808s.gif

In case you hadn't already noticed, Kanye West is no longer strictly a "hip-hop" artist so expect to see plenty of him in Soulful as the release date for 808's and Heartbreak gets closer. Homeboy hit up "Big Boy's Neighborhood" radio show where he answered a ton of questions about why he became a "Rappa Ternt Sanga" (I was wrong, T-Pain was not the cause), how he became a last minute replacement to close this years MTV VMA's and how he blames his Hollywood lifestyle for the death of his mother.
beyonce-instyle-november-2008-02.jpg

Another day, another Beyonce post. Our girl graces the cover and inside pages of the November issue of InStyle Magazine. She looks absolutely stunning in all of the shots and the interview includes details about her favorite designers of the moment as well as her style icons.
tpain.jpg

If you haven't already heard, T-Pain stepped up to the plate to replace Katt Williams as this year's host of the BET Hip Hop Awards. Soul Rebel was there to see the show, and as much as I hate to admit it - T-Pain not only has his ish together, I am ready to declare him as THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTIST of the current music landscape.  Feel free to throw tomatoes if you disagree, the proof is not just in the pudding, it's in the music that is currently on the charts and the music that is slated to hit the streets shortly.

Nelly-Furtado-loose-01.jpg

"Promiscuous Girl" no longer, Canadian singer Nelly Furtado recently revealed that she married earlier this summer.  The singer will appear on "Entertainment Tonight Canada" this evening (10/17) for an interview that includes details about her July nuptials.

Keri Hilson - Legs Crossed S.jpg

Keri Hilson
has been a very busy young woman! With her debut album, In A Perfect World due out December 9th, homegirl has a new video with Chris Brown "Superhuman" and recently filmed a video for her Timbaland assisted single "Return The Favor" but industry naysayers haven't put a lot of faith in the songwriter turned artist.

AvantNew.jpg

It's been several years since Avant released an album, but the Cleveland, Ohio native is back with a whole new label and his first self-titled album due out before the end of the year. Check out his interview with Soul Rebel, where he reveals details on his project, the label change and his thoughts on the election year.

Beyonce Knowles

It's that time again! There is lots of good music out right now but there's only a few songs catchy enough to get caught in my head. This week Beyonce, Musiq Soulchild, Keyshia Cole, Santogold and Britney Spears have caught my attention.  Check out the songs and feel free to list the five you can't shake below.
Janet Jackson

After postponing a string of concert dates due to illness, Janet Jackson is opening up about what had her not feeling so well. Apparently she suffers from a serious form of headaches called vestibular migraines, which result in vertigo-like symptoms. The good news is that Janet is receiving treatment for the migraines and has been declared well enough to  enough to resume her "Rock Witchu" tour.

beyonce-trl-04.jpg

Beyonce appeared on MTV's "TRL" yesterday with both her new videos, for "Single Ladies" and "If I Were A Boy." The singer also opened up about her upcoming album I Am... revealing that the set will be a double disc collection.

Ciara

Ciara is almost finished with her third album Fantasy Ride and she took some time to do a vlog with Sean Garrett- who helped launch her career by penning "Goodies" with her. Check out the video below:
Leona-Lewis-j23.jpg

It happened to Ashanti with The Vault, now Leona Lewis is fighting to keep material from surfacing from her days before "X-Factor" fame. Lawyers for the singer are currently working to prevent a London record company from releasing an album she made before winning the popular British show. Ashanti didn't have any luck keeping her old songs in "the vault." Will Leona fare better?
Beyonce

Yes, the Beyonce onslaught continues.  And with Bey set to release her album next month expect even more promotional performances, interviews and videos to come.  Anyway, Mrs. Carter is back with her second video, this one clearly crafted to please the dancing set.  Snaps for the kid, right? Oh, and kudos to girlfriend for working it out in that leotard.  Can't say she's not keeping up with hubby's favorite signee.

shontelle_couch.jpg

Barbados is on the fast track to becoming the latest hot spot for R&B talent. Of course everybody knows good girl gone bad, Rihanna, but now SRC/Universal has emerged with a brand new Bajan star, Shontelle -- who is an accomplished songwriter in addition to being a singer. With her new album Shontelligence dropping November 18th, Soul Rebel chopped it up with the island beauty about her first single "T-Shirt," her road to success, and the obvious comparisons to you-know-who.
cici_men.jpg

Men's Health spends some time with the Princess of Crunk & B, Ciara for their November issue. The svelte singer posed for a special spread in the magazine and opened up with some good tips on staying focused while dating. Ciara also revealed that she's picked up her drive for performing from athletes.

Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy" Video

knowles-beyonce-photo.jpg

Beyonce's new singles "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies" have been out for a whopping four days and they are already getting crazy spins on the radio. Strangely enough though public opinion doesn't seem to be too high for either song just yet. Pretty much everyone who I've talked to says both songs are weak and even worse - boring. But all that might change soon enough, now that there's a video right?

janet_jackson_10.jpg

After a nearly two week hiatus Janet Jackson is returning to her "Rock Withchu Tour," following an illness that put her on the sidelines. Promoters Live Nation confirmed to Access Hollywood that the superstar will return to her cross country trek beginning Saturday, October 11 in Uncasville, CT. The singer canceled concerts in Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia and Greensboro, North Carolina after she fell ill and was rushed to the hospital during a pre-show sound check, Monday September 29 in Montreal. Hopefully Janet is in the clear now and will be able to continue the tour without further interruption. I'm really rooting for her.

amy-winehouse-drug.jpg

What kind of f*ckery is this??? I got an email yesterday saying Amy Winehouse recently tried to commit suicide and I almost replied back - AGAIN? Then it hit me that most people wouldn't consider all those hospitalizations and supposed bouts with exhaustion (overdoses?) to be attempts on her own life, but let's be real about it. The child has been crying out for help for two years now. I know I've written at least four Crazy Amy news stories and who knows how many blogs about the woman.

One of my favorite songs on Solange's new album has to be "T.O.N.Y." so when I heard that the younger Knowles sister is working on a video for the track, I was definitely interested to know more.
jazmine-sullivan-2008-09-24-300x300.jpg

Another week is here and that means nearly a whole new set of songs I've got stuck in my head. Of course it should come as no surprise that I'm still rocking with Jazmine Sullivan, especially with that new video she has out that slightly scares me.

Yes more Beyonce. Twice in one day. What can I say though? She's an unstoppable force, and the masses just can't get enough of her. So much so that one single premiere just isn't enough for Queen Bey. She heard what you were saying about "If I Were A Boy" sounding like elevator music and had to hit ya with her surefire dancefloor friendly female empowerment second single "Single Ladies".

ciara-set-of-go-girl-1.jpg

The video for Ciara's T-Pain assisted single "Go Girl" has finally been released. Ciara's futuristic bondage costumes had everyone wondering what was gonna happen, but much like that "nude" VIBE cover, the hype might have been bigger than what the video actually called for. I'll let you be the judge though.

Keyshia Cole is gearing up for the release of her third album, due out late this year. A lil birdie left me one of her new records, "Playa Cardz Right" which features 2Pac.

danity+kane.jpg
Tonight marks the season finale for "Making The Band" and Diddy is definitely bringing the drama for this one. If you haven't seen it yet, the promo for the show features Diddy sitting with the girls of Danity Kane discussing group problems and possibly dismissing a member.
red.jpg

So Def Jam has a new group, Electrik Red. Four girls, who could easily have walked straight out of the Urban Outfitters catalog or better yet, The Hundreds Labor Day party. When I saw this promo shot for their new single "Drink In My Cup" and heard they're somehow associated with The-Dream I was curious enough to go do a little research.  Here's what I found out:

brandyhumancover.jpg

Brandy is back with her new album Human on November 11th (peep the official cover above) and the former "Moesha" star hit up Hot 97 to talk to Angie Martinez about the upcoming project as well as all the things she's gone through since her last album dropped, including her involvement in that fatal car accident nearly two years ago.

Last night VH1 taped this years Hip Hop Honors, paying homage to hip hop legends Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick, Too Short and Naughty By Nature and I just had to let my Soulful heads know the show has something special in store for you too.

After several years away from the limelight, Jon B. returns with his new album Helpless Romantic later this month. Check out my Q&A with him to find out what he's been up to, which new artists have been inspiring him and why he'll never truly retire from the music business!

Since it's Friday, you know I have another hot mix for your downloading pleasure coming directly from Seattle's Rock Steady representer DV One! http://www.myspace.com/dvone Check it out below:
neyo1.jpg

Is the world ready for a movie about Ne-Yo? I sure hope so, because the artist born Shaffer Smith is following in Eminem's footsteps by starring in an upcoming film about his personal journey to stardom.

usher.jpg

Soul Rebel checking back in with the top five songs I can't get out of my head this week -- from Usher, J-Hud, Robin Thicke and even, *gulp*, Britney Spears.  What five songs are stuck in your head?
dangelo.jpg

Consider it Christmas in October - at least that's what I'm doing. There's been all this "Is He/Isn't He" talk about whether or not D'Angelo's third album will actually surface next spring but iTunes has gone and made a remake of "I Found My Smile Again" available, reviving talk of the new project.
knowles-beyonce-photo.jpg

Obviously with the new album coming Beyonce is about to be everywhere. The singer has signed on to perform at the MTV Europe Music Awards this November, potentially to sing her dual singles "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies" from her upcoming album.
