I had the pleasure of interviewing Janet Jackson yesterday as part of a teleconference with a select few fellow bloggers... And I'm sorry to tell you guys this but it's looking like the label is not planning to allow any more singles from Discipline to be released.
Here's what Janet had to say when I asked her what her next single would be:
"That’s pretty difficult to say, only because of the record label at this point. We started off with “Feedback†and the label and myself haven’t quite seen eye to eye since the "Feedback" single so they’ve kind of basically stopped all promotion. I’m trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album so I don’t think you’re going to hear another single off this album."

She also revealed some details about her upcoming "Rock Witchu Tour":
"It’s a completely different show, like nothing before in the past. My real goal is to try and do every single I’ve ever had... so I have to figure out how to fit that into two hours and yet give them enough so they don’t feel hungry for more of that song in particular."
As for why she chose to title the tour after her song "Rock Wit U":
"It’s fitting to me, fitting to what the show will be like. It’s a dance show, it’s all upbeat I want it to be a party onstage, a party in the arena. I’ve always said when people come to these shows I want them to forget about all their problems all the drama in their lives and just have a good time, just let it go for a couple hours and bring some happiness into their lives. It’s going to be one big party, I want to 'Rock Witchu.'"
Last but not least Janet wanted to make sure fans know she has been keeping up with the internet talk about her not making to Europe to promote Discipline:
"I just want to let the fans know because I’ve been reading a lot what the bloggers have been saying about the record and not hearing it on the radio and stuff like that, so I just wanted to let them know where things were as well and where it was all coming from. I’ve heard people talking about me not coming to Europe in support of the record just to let them know that it was definitely in my heart to go to Europe and to support this album but it’s about teamwork, it’s not something I can totally do on my own. Unfortunately things have turned out the way that they have with the differences between the label and myself, which we have been having for the most part from the beginning. So I just want to tell them again thank you very much for all the love and all the support and I they understand the entire situation and I’m really excited to see everybody on tour. I’m really looking forward to that it’s going to be a lot of fun."

You janet fans feel really stupid. It is over for Janet and her career! She thought she had a chance with Mariah being on the same Label and she didn't. They knew who was going to sell and mariah brings in the money ,Janet don't. They fully support Mariah and Mariah is the Head Chick at IDJ. Mariah contract was over with after this album did u think they were going to let her leave for Janet.

Yes. Def Jam has messed up "Discipline" just like Virgin messed up "20 Y.O."...not entirely. I love, love, love Janet Jackson, but it seems that her recordings as of lately are not poppin' like they used to. I am excited about her tour; however, and will try to get seats as close to the stage as possible. I know it will be a great show.
Discipline was a good album actually...Feedback was a great single...much better than touch my body crap. I guess whte stans are just more loyal to "their" artists(Mariah) evn when they release crappy sngles.

It all goes back to them both being on virgin Janet was not too crazy with Mimi coming over to virgin back in 01.Being that Janet was queen over there when Mimi went through her downward spiral and Janet they rode with Janet as they should have. Now in 08 the tables have turned where Mimi is queen at Island and Janet is not so hot at the moment so as labels do they push artist that's hot and generating the money.
Why should Janet fans feel "stupid?" Stupid for what? We all know "Discipline" didn't do so well commercially, but we still support her. And I have to agree with Gee. This same thing happened at Virgin a few years back when Janet was their top selling artists and Mariah as staggering over there. I think some of the blame does fall on the record labels. But it doesn't matter. I'm still a hardcare Janet fan. And this tour better good! Good luck JJ :)
Bottom line, Janet doesn't have it anymore. "Feedback" did not get a good response from the audience, neither did the album.

Janet never ever should have gone there. Big mistake. Mariah is the main bitch over there, period. It's fucked up ... because Discipline is actually a very good album and far superior to the mess Mariah put out. (And I actually liked Mariah's last one and was looking forward to this one.) People just didn't give it a chance, just like with 20 YO. You got people downloading one or two tracks rather than listening to the entire album and saying they don't like it. Or, reading hating ass blogs and going by what they say. But, it is what it is. I can't wait for Mariah's looney ass to have another breakdown when her bullshit marriage falls apart - let's see how great her fairweather fans think she is then. The same people riding her ass were the ones dissing her when she was down on her luck just a few years back. It will be Glitter all over again!
That said, I can't wait for Janet's concert here in DC.

Im not a big janet or mariah fan but neither one of them are bringing it with these recent albums. Going on tour and selling records are two different things. Artists that don't have albums out go on tour. Furthermore, you see how she is going all around promoting the tour and giving away freebies because she know she don't have it like that anymore.

I'm so far down no ones going to read this but ok. Janet had a very big promotion plan behind the launch of her album. She was on MTV for two weeks straight on every commercial break with her song blasting while she imitated puff daddy for the making the band episodes. She still debuted #1 but sold less than her previous two albums. I mean if people aren't connecting with an album, they're just not. Theres a point where you gotta say enough and I guess Island Def Jam reached it. So everybody thats saying she didn't have promotion, thats not true. Plus advertising time on MTV isn't cheap and she was on there 24/7 for TWO WEEKS. MTV's main demographic are young white kids, AKA the only people who buy CDs now a days. So if that doesn't do it then I'm not sure what will?

And @DARNELLL...I don't think anybody is saying that Def Jam should take ALL the blame for Janet. I mean, even though I really like "Discipline," I was hoping that she would do more "I Get Lonely" and "That's The Way Love Goes" type songs (nonetheless, it's still a great album). But these big record labels need to take SOME responsibility for how shitty the music industry is today. Just my opinion.

How did they promote the heck out of it? They didn't get her on MTV until 1WEEK before her album droped. THEY chose a bad second single and won't even give her a third. "Luv" was actually gaining impression at radio as feedback was on the decline. Why not let her make a video for that song and make it the third single? If they were promoting the heck out of it then why are they pulling the plug on the album in early June, when the album just droped in April? Rhiana's album was selling slow most of 2007, yet they gave her two singles to followup "Umbrella". It wasn't until the third single "PDSTM" became a hit at the end of the year did her album go platinum. Why not give Janet the same chance.

This is indeed primarily IDJ's fault! Only 1 single was really promoted from Discipline and that was Feedback. Just for the record, Feedback sold over 600,000 legal downloads and Discipline did debut at #1 on all of the album charts. So no, it's not like there wasn't any public interest, but if you don't have a radio hit, it's practically impossible to maintain album sales these days. In any case, Jan should focus on the tour and her film career, leave IDJ and start anew with new music in a few years with another label. Oh, and leave JD...He's been a curse, not a blessing to her career. We all know that she left Virgin for IDJ because that's what he did, yet JD doesn't have any pull to get IDJ to do right by his wifey? Does he even care???

"Feedback" actually reached #19 on the billboard hot 100 and sold 600,000 legal downloads. It was a bigger hit than most would like to give her credit for. What was missing was Radio airplay, and thats because Janet is clearly still blacklisted. As was said earlier in this post, without constant radio and video airplay you will not sell. There is no greater promotion than millions of people hearing your song every 30 to 45 minutes. But IDJ knew about JJ's situation at radio long before they signed her, so they should have been ready for a fight. Clearly they weren't or they wouldn't be giving up after 2 months. If that was the case then Janet could have followed her own vision and stuck with JJ and TL instead of working with all these new producers that LA reid just had to have her work with. And those new producers weren't cheap.
Record label politics are about the sell... flat out.
It's about the team like any other office. Second someone goes against the grain, they lose their support.
Mariah's album is probably her worst work to date, but she's a team player, Janet on the other hand stood her ground and went against the powers that be - in doing so, lost her support.
That's how corporate America works!
Hope she jumps ship and goes to Live Nation where all the big artists are now.

Take a look at Chrisette Michele, The Roots, Method Man and Redman (all of which who are signed to the same label). All those artists had commercial flops with their recent albums. So I guess we can call their music trash too since no one responded to it either right? Or let's take Erykah Badu. Her recent album sold around 300,000 copies, not even reaching gold. And she didnt start promotion until 2 weeks befor the album came out. No one is selling right now. And madonna is suppported by white folks. mostly gay white men. Janet is a great entertainer but singer she is not so without a great production on record or on stage what do you have? All artist have their slumps but it is sad when there is so much talent out there that is rarely tapped into but we continue to worship certain established celebs regardless of the quality of their product. For that I blame the record companies and to some degree the public.

Janet is like Michael when it comes to touring...no MATTER WHAT ANYONE thinks about the last 2 albums, Janet puts on the best stage show, of almost ANY female artist around. She really gives the fans their money worth. Michael could announce a tour right now, and the thing will still sell out because it's Michael Jackson, and its the same for Janet. The problem is as I see it, NO ONE listens to "real" music anymore, if you not singing about money, clothes, rims and hoes, it doesn't sell. Their is relevancy for ya.
