I guess I must've been onto something when I posted Aaliyah last week because The FADER Magazine is featuring the much beloved late singer in Issue 54, their Icon Issue.

Here's what some of the people closest to her had to say for the magazine along with some of my favorite Aaliyah videos:

Missy Elliott: "We was gonna save the world. We was gonna change music every chance we got. We was gonna always be family. Forever."

Mark Ronson: "If it wasn't for Aaliyah being the face and voice of [Missy Elliott and Timbaland's] sound they might have never got to where they did. They were presenting their sort of brilliant but challenging breakthrough music through this beautiful young girl who could sing it perfectly."

Kidada Jones: "I think about her all the time...Anytime she's brought up or her music comes on the radio, it's sweet, but it definitely sounds like she found a niche before it was here. If you listen to her music it's so relevant today, but we had it so long ago."

Damon Dash: "She was already a fashion icon, she was getting into movies, she had already planted that seed. If she was alive today she would be so relevant. I see little bits of her everywhere I look, in a lot of artists."

Jomo Hankerson: "I think a lot of that mysteriousness they talk about was just what she was. She seemed like she came here already grown up, from the beginning."

Where were you when Aaliyah died? I still remember waking up the morning after my cousin got married in Detroit and hearing about Aaliyah's death all over the news while her hometown was in mourning.

Who would you cast as Aaliyah in a biopic? Ciara? Ashanti? Christina Milian? Keri Hilson?

Talk to me y'all!

I was listening to the radio when they broke the news... it was like a stunned silence because you was like WOW. She definitely is an ICON, her music is just as relevant today as it was back in 2001. Justin Timberlake, Brandy, Nelly Furtado and even Britney Spears are keeping her legacy alive due to Timbaland giving them the same treatment he gave her. I wish there was some way we could have heard what her 4th album would have sounded like or what her career would have been. R.I.P Babygirl... We Need A Resolution is still my favorite song and video.

I was listening to WGCI in Chicago in my living room with my best friend when they broke the news. I couldn't believe it at first. Then they confirmed it. Too Sad.

I remember for a whole month before she had died, I watching 106 & Park everyday. B/c she was giving away the (at that time) New Cadillac Escalade + $20,000. And each day, it would be a word of the day we would have to go the BET website and enter that word.
Then she died, and I think I heard it first on 106 & Park.. And I couldn't believe it.

But I would love to see Megan Good, really tape into a challenging role. I think her as Aaliyah would be great, if she does it right. She's been playing a lot of Sexy girl roles (damn sure aint nothing wrong w/ that), but I think in order for her to be taken seriously being cast as Aaliyah.. Would be good for her!

i was on my way back from my father-in-law's house when i heard it on the radio. i just drove silent hoping it wasn't true; but it was. she is definitely a pioneer. i just brought this up at work last week: would beyonce' be as big if aaliyah was alive? still remember all her hits. just something about her.

I was on my way back into D.C. from Chicago when I heard it on the radio. I pulled over because I couldn't believe it. As far as her music goes, it will never, ever get old.

Aaliyah is my favorite female singer...PERIOD.

We really lost someone special when she was taken.

So many imitations...but none with the full package that she presented.

I was getting ready for school that monday morning and mtv news came on... I was floored, i sat looking at the tv with my jaw dropped literally... I already had the aaliyah album and I listened to it all day, cuz i was thinking about how that would be the last album, the last time we would hear new material. I was already a big aaliyah fan but it magnified so much after her death, it was like I knew her...R.I.P

I was at a stop light downtown.. when I heard the bad news. I miss her singing..her style.. She was everything that ya dont see much today. Miss you Aaliyah

R.I.P. Aaliyah

I was on my way back to miami from vacation and got home and heard about. The aiport she was supposed to fly in was down the street from my grandma's house ( Opa-Locka Airport). I didnt belive it at first, but then it was all ova cnn and i had kno choice but 2. R.I.P. Aaliyah u are TRULY missed.

I just dropped my kids off with the babysitter on my way to an R. Kelly concert

Let see.... I was in the bed and something woke me up at like 12:48 at night, and unfortunately I sleep with the TV on, and Kirk Loder was saying it on MTV. I think Kelly Rowland or Ciara should play her cuz they both kinda sing like her in they own way, and they look like her in they own way. As for actress, I think Meagan Good wouldn't be a good look cuz she is jye bad girl sexy.....maybe Zoe Saldanna.

Dam that was like a week or so before 9/11... I remember it clearly, I was at this club in NY when my peoples came up to me and told me that they had heard on the radio in the cab that Aaliyah died in a plane crash. I was rolling on an e pill at the time so it kinda went in one ear and out of the other....it aint really hit me until we was goin home and it was all over the radio and news. I just couldn't believe it.

I think they should find a new talent to play Aaliyah. I'm sure that there are a few undiscovered black actresses that can the play the role well.

I remember I was knocked out sleep and my friend called me at 1:30 in the morning was like did u hear Aaliyah died. I was taken aback because she was just on 106th & park and saying how she was going to film the video for Rock the boat. There will never be another like her and her influence is definitely felt. I agree with you SOUL REBEL Tyra B. should potray her. She definitely reminds me alot of Aaliyah. I am glad that publications like these keep her legacy alive. She was definitely One In A Million! RIP Baby Girl.

oh..and i see u soulman tryna creepin quietly!!

I remember i was 15 and it was on msnbc at 2 in the morning...its crazy because they said madonna died a week earlier so i thought it was fake and cut the t.v off..i just remember being sad the next day when i heard it was true...Aaliyah is definately still one of a kind and i'm glad Fader is honoring her memory

And speaking of Aaliyah, i was definately bumping 'More Than A Woman' last night...still can't get those moves down!!

And speaking of Aaliyah, i was definately bumping 'More Than A Woman' last night...still can't get those moves down!!

It was a Sunday morning and my husband woke me up and told me. I was shocked at how it affected me. I've never been the type to get caught up in celebrity's lives. I like to read the gossip if I'm on the computer but that's it. I took Aaliyah's death very hard though. I always thought she was so beautiful, entertaining, and authentic and I cried for me, her family and everyone who would miss her.

I was with my cousin watching TV and we had this kind of cable that when news happen a i pop up. So I click on the i and it said singer Aaliyah died in plane crash. At first I thought the thing was wrong so I turned to CNN and they had it flashing across the screen at the button. I would pick Ciara to play her.

i remember dat exact moment when i heard of her death. i woke up, and got ready for school. i went in my moms room to ask her something, and she had some news show on (cant remember which one). Dey had announced the plane crash, and im thinking it was just anybody, but when dey said aaliyah, i just froze. she was one of my most favorite singer, and my sistas. 2 dis day, i still cant believe she's gone. R.I.P. Aaliyah a.k.a. Baby Gurl

I remember I was home sleeping and my parents were on vacation and they called and told me that she had died they heard it on the radio and I didn't believe it I got up and got on the computer to check. I feel bad but my first reaction was "NO why not Britney" But she was on her way to becoming a legend no one was doing what she was doing and they still cant.

I was at home in the D listening to FM 98. I couldn't believe because she was just getting to the point that people were seeing the true talent that she was. Even though she was born in New York, she definitely was a Detroit woman. I don't think any actress can play her simply because of how she danced that is the reason that Ciara gets my vote. R.I.P. BabyGirl. Truly 1 in a Million

this singer girl named Kesha Chante is the SPLITTING image of Aaliyah.. IT'S SCARY HOW MUCH THEY LOOK ALIKE. Word is that she will be playing Aaliyah in the biopic...check her out for yourself:

I was n da military when i heard it. What a lost she was da truth, unique 1 n a million. Ciara wuld b great 2 play her.

dakidd i agree with u completley they shud find new talent to play the one n only aaliyah

i think her best friend kidada should play her...im still a fan of Aaliyah & always will be- she is gone but not forgotten, still listen to her music: she very much influential in the music today,i wouldnt say id lump britney spears w/ the true artist that u can hear her influences in

I was at church when someone told me. I couldn't believe it. I told my mom and she said she had seen it on the news the night before but didn't want to tell me. I cried right there at church . Me and aaliyah were the same age. I felt like we grew up together or something. People always told me that i looked like aaliyah, especially while i was in high school, when she'd just come out. I miss her music, it was always unique and fresh. I miss the videos, the cool dances. When i hear her songs it takes me back to a good place and i can't help but smile. I would like to play aaliyah in a movie.

AALIYAH I LOVE YOU, I MISS YOU, YOU'RE IN MY HEART ALWAYS. I WILL SEE YOU AT FERNCLIFF SOON. YOU TOUCHED MY LIFE. YOUR LEGACY LIVES THROUGH ME, ALWAYS.

I remember when i was 14 yr old I was outside with my lil sister and some firends and as soon i got in the house my mom and her Firend as well my older sister Told me that aaliyah had die then I heard in the new while living in Altanta,ga and aaliyah still my favorite singer today(I've been a fan of her since i was litter girl) No matter what PPl say. she's in a better Palce.
