Toni Braxton Cancels April Shows -- Who Would You Hire To Fill In?

As I mentioned in Hot Press last week, Toni Braxton was recently hospitalized for chest pain. She's since been forced to sit out the rest of her April showdates at the Flamingo Las Vegas with plans to resume the show on May 6th.

That's really sad news -- I hope they're able to find out what's wrong with her and are able to help. Vegas is a great place for her to make some dough since the music business hasn't been so kind to her as of late.

Here's a mini-homage to Toni -- Get well soon!

"Making Me High"

"Let It Flow"

"Unbreak My Heart"

I was racking my brain trying to think of who could stand in for Toni and realized (while obviously the music biz has changed) there isn't really a chick in the game that is filling the void Toni left.

"Nobody's Supposed To Be Here"

"You Put A Move On My Heart"

From her generation of singers I thought maybe Deborah Cox or Tamia... But what about today's singers? Are any of them even close to Toni's lane? What were your favorite Toni Braxton hits? Is there anyone out now that reminds you of her?

Talk to me y'all!

  • God bless Toni. That was a great performance, one of the few times you can actually hear what she's singing and she gives you the power. My favorites from her would be 7 Whole Days, Another Sad Love Song, Love Shoulda Brought U Home, Spanish Guitar, He Wasn't Man Enough, Be A Man About It, Talkin In His Sleep, Angel Break My Heart, Let It Flow Hit The Freeway, Take This Ring and Shadowless.

Umm the closest to Toni would be Monica since they are both altos. Mo is the only one who comes to mind when people ask who is our generation's Whitney or Toni. Maybe Jennifer Hudson but I'm waiting on official material from her.

Nice to see you shout out Deborah & Tamia, so underrated but bad ass chicks. Blu Cantrell and Syleena Johnson are others.

  • Deborah Cox, Anita Baker, Maybe even thick ass Kelly Price ....Those are just random names that sorta came to mind. But I have to agree, there is no one around these days who could fill Toni's shoes.

  • Well Soul Rebel, I would say my favorite Toni Braxton hits were "Breathe Again", "Un-Break My Heart", "Love Should've Brought You Home", and "Seven Whole Days". Hope she gets well soon. As for the person to fill in for her I would have to say Brandy, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, or Alicia Keys. The former two could probably use it to build a buzz for their new albums.

  • I love me some Toni Braxton! I agree with Deborah Cox and Tamia to take her place! Tamia is so underrated and I am glad her cd quietly went Gold. I hope Toni Braxton feels better, her last cd was nice but not promoted. I still listen to Take this ring!

  • Toni is irreplaceable but Tamia and Deborah were they first two artists to come to mind for me too.

Fave Toni songs- Unbreak my Heart, Breath Again, S'posed To Be, He Wasn't Man Enough For Me, Take This Ring, Trippin', Midnight, Lies Lies Lies.

    OK too many to count.

  • Take This Ring was so hot imo. Its a shame that it didn't get the intention it deserved. Breathe Again is another favorite. I hope she gets better soon. I'm sure alot is on her plate between her heart problems and an autistic son.

  • Why should Anita Baker fill Toni's shoes, when Toni filled in for the void left by Anita Baker? On the other hand no one around sings like Toni. When people talk about her they tend to treat her like a one hit wonder, which is sad because she was one of the singers in the 90's that could compete vocally (and saleswise in the US) with Whitney, Celine, and Mariah. As for my favorite Toni songs, the whole Secrets album. Her best stuff ever!

  • No one could really fill in for Toni but Tamia came to my mind too.

A couple of my favourite songs from her would be: 7 Whole Days, Suddenly, He Wasn't Man Enough, Trippin', Please, and of course Unbreak My Heart and Breathe Again! Hope u feel well soon Toni!

  • Deborah Cox definitely. She is extremely underrated for no apparent reason, yet the most gifted contemporary vocalist in the music industry. She is definitely qualified to fill Toni's void more than any other artist. Oh, and my favorite Toni songs are "Fairy Tale" "I don't want to" and "Love shoulda brought you home (sensual remix)". I like many of her other songs as well. "The Heat" CD was just awesome!
