Who's copping Estelle's album Shine today? I'm a big fan of this one!

April 29th is a good day for music -- Madonna is also releasing Hard Candy I'm feeling her latest single "The Beat Goes On" ft. Kanye & Pharrell

While I sometimes lament how much soul has gone "pop" -- you have to give it up to Pharrell and Timbaland for becoming "popular music". With strong percussive (drums baby!) backgrounds like theirs it is good to see them eating well! So yeah I'm checking for Madonna too...

Lyfe Jennings' album Lyfe Change also drops today (Check Never Never Land) As does The Roots Rising Down

Glad to have a reason to post "Rising Up" !

Remember Chauncey Black from Blackstreet?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

He's baaaaaaaack... Signed to Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Records (via Geffen/Interscope), first up from Chauncey is his Teddy Riley produced new single Everyday is Your Birthday (Click to hear) off his upcoming album Church Boy

Despite the title, it's not a gospel project. With tracks like "The Three of Us " a story about a husband and wife and his mistress, “Devil’s Angel” which details interracial relationships and the sins of the wild life, "Roll Out," produced by Dr. Dre and featuring The Game and "I'm Your Pusher" (also produced by Dre) about "a girl, a hotel room and what a few too many drinks can lead to" Black is definitely making secular music. Ne-Yo wrote two songs for the project "I Get It" and "Someone Else" and LT Hutton produced "One Nite Stand."

Chauncey is also heading on tour with Keyshia Cole. With a Grammy, a # 1 hit ("No Diggity") and 8 million records sold as part of Blackstreet I'm definitely not counting him out. He probably should have had a chat with Rah Digga and Papoose before getting that Flipmode tattoo though!!!

For more on Chauncey check out his myspace: http://www.myspace.com/chaunceyblack

So tell me, who is copping new music today? And who is checking for Chauncey? Talk to me y'all!

  • Madonna's cd is actually good. Large in part because of the aforementioned two producers. The beats are hot and they managed to keep to Madonna's sound.

For the folks who don't think Madonna is R&B (Soul) you need to check your 80's history. Pop and R&B have only within the past 2 decades have become so separate. Back in the day Madonna was played on all the R&B stations. The same ones today that only play hip-hop and "R&B". So it's really not surprising that producers like Timbaland and Pharell are able to ride both genres so well.

  • The only two people I would take a chance on buying their album is Estelle and Lyfe Jennings. Madonna please, I don't even know why she is mention like she is soul music. She is not soul music or r&b music. Just because you use black producers don't make you soul or r&b.

  • It's probably just me, but I have always discerned "r&b" and "soul" to a certain extent. Can't really explain it, but I find a difference between the two. Ah well. Anyway, I have to agree with NNL. I like Madonna, and "Hard Candy" is her closest album to sounding r&b, but she's still pop (to me at least). She has, for the most part, had a big r&b influence, but a lot of artists do. Doesn't mean they're automatically "r&b." I guess it all comes down to categorizing. I just don't see Madonna, whether the '80s version or the 2008 version, as having enough soul or r&b in her music to be categorized as such. But I appreciate her for who she is, which is a pop artist who likes to infuse r&b in her music. Nothing wrong with that. And here in Ohio, to the best of my knowledge, Madonna has never been played on an r&b station. When I was growing up (I'm in my mid '20s now), to hear a Madonna song, we had to turn the radio to the "MTV" or "VH1" sounding stations. The "r&b/hip-hop" stations were playing, well, r&b and hip-hop. I'm just saying...

  • I Wanna hear an album from Mark Middleton of Blackstreet. He's an even better singer than Chauncey

  • R&B vs. Pop. How does one define? If the artist is white do we immediately say it's pop? If black, do we say it's R&B? Or do we go on sound which is created large in part by the producers? I don't know. But today it seems if you don't have a big soulful voice (like Madonna) you are labeled as pop regardless who produces the sound. Just food for thought.

  • "I remember Chauncy, he was Black as the Street was..." Dre production? Dude might be back on with that. Borderline, Holiday and Like a Virgin (bassline was basically Billie Jean sped up) and Madonna has no R&B vibe historically? I question some folk musical acumen.

  • @ Page Black...Good question. Madonna is pop to me because she sounds like it, regardless of her producers. Remember her "Ray of Light" days when she was going for a more ethereal/spiritual/new age/Indian sound? She still sounded pop to me. And yes, there are black artists that are categorized as "r&b" but they don't sound like it, i.e., Janet (not hating; I'm her biggest; trust!), Beyonce (yes I took it there), Rihanna, Chris Brown (took it there too) and hell, even some of the Motown artists, i.e., The Supremes, based, in part, on their voices, which I think is a starting point to categorize an artist. For example, I think Pink has an r&b/rock voice, and she was going for an r&b type sound when she first hit the scene. But now, she's considered pop-rock. She was able to flip-flop sounds with ease because of her voice. But then there's Justin Timberlake who was somewhat branded an r&b artist for "Future Sex/Love Sounds." But JT clearly has the classic pop voice, even if his album was produced by Timbaland. I'm sorry, but to me, your voice has to have soul to be considered a soul artist or an r&b artist, even if you cross genres (soul-rock, pop-soul, etc.). And, to me, Madonna doesn't have enough soul in her voice to be considered an r&b artist. It's very hard to articulate, but some artists have soul in their voices, others don't. Look at Linda Perry. I consider her a soul/rock artist. And I would even categorize Estelle as a pop/soul artist. Can't say the same for Madonna, even though I'm a big fan. That's just my opinion yall. Hope I was clear :)

  • And to add to that, just because you have a few "r&b" sounding songs under your belt doesn't mean you're automatically an r&b artist. Madonna has an r&b vibe at times, but not enough for her to be branded an r&b artist. Sorry. Nonetheless, "Hard Candy" is really good, and regardless of what music genre you're into, check it out!

  • Man too hell with all that genre shizz.. Look man.. Do you like the music or don't you? Everyone these day's iz a fake azz music industry insider/specialist.. Our problem is we are overthinking and over analyzing.. If the music sounds good to you then thats what it is. It can be Madona, Justin Timberlake, Janet, Trey Songz, Gerald Levert, Talib, Kanye, 50 cent, Lupe, Beyonce, Britney, Estelle, BUMP WHATEVER WITHOUT JUDGEMENT. That's my 4 cents.

  • funny how no one said that Madonna needs to sit her old ass down (pushing 50), but when Janet's cd was released that's all you hear. Love how some of you treat your own black artist compared to this chick that has the same damn tone on every song.

  • I agree wholeheartedly with Eleanor Rigby, damn you dropped some knowledge. Estelle & Lyfe suck vocally so I'm not checking for them. I rather play Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or Anthony David then listen to those wannabes. I only liked Dave Hollister from Blackstreet. I loved Confessions by Madonna so we'll check this out.

  • What makes you think Beat Goes On his Madonna's latest single?

I thought that was 4 Minutes, to be followed up by Give It 2 Me. Betcha Beat is released 3rd, though. It's a great song.
