In case you haven't noticed Ms. Badu is on the cover of the April edition of Essence
(check out okayplayer for the full story, it's totally worth squinting at your screen to read the scan)

If I haven't mentioned it already I'll go on the record now. New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War) is my shit! Initially I was on some, I like it but not as much as Baduizm or Mama's Gun, but after a week I can say --- bump that - it's dope. Period. Apparently a lot of folks agree because she sold 123,900 copies her first week out.

A few of you expressed some eagerness to discuss, so let's do it. I'll post a few vids to help us along.

Erykah talking about "The Healer"

Erykah performing "Soldier" live for VH1 Soulstage

Erykah performing "Me" live for VH1 Soulstage

"Telephone"

Oh and if I didn't make it obvious enough for ya, "Telephone," "Soldier," "The Healer," and "Me" are my favorite songs on the album...

Talk to me y'all!

Erykah is that bitch! I love the new album, like you, even moer after a week of listenin to it. She is truely a teacher. The Healer is good. It's different, and it makes you pay attentiont o what she's sayin as opposed to a beat. THANK YOU FOR THE SOLDIER VIDEO! THAT'S MY SHIT! You can tell she's feelin her shit. The message is uplifting and inspiring.

I said in the other post that "Me" "Telephone" "Soldier" "The Cell" and "AmErykahn Promise" were some of my favorites. If she don't et nominated for every award out there, we'll know MUSIC, not just hip-hop, is DEAD.

  • Yeah, I just brought the Badu album yesterday...it's a bit militant for my taste, but she's spreading a message, so i'ma keep listening to it, hope I warm up to it, "me" is definetly my favorite so far though....I LOVE that soul mix, "Zion" is my favorite Lauryn Hill song, it's so passionate, and that "Light" remix is dope too, good blog today!

  • These are definately the best songs on the album! As a matter of fact I think "soldier" should be her next single. The album is short and sweet the way an album should be. Artist need to realize that those albums with more than 13 songs tend to have a lot of filler.

  • I applaud u for this, I don't think there has ever been a whole e. Badu post ever! I don't think her album is "left" at all, her album has been the best release this year so far. Soulrebel, keep up the good work, cuz it looks like we may be hearing about some good artists...

  • I agree with Scooby, the album was a little too far left for my taste, but so was Worldwide Underground. "Me" and especially "Telephone" are the ish though.

  • I like Badu but can completely understand when folks say she is too 'left' or as I like to say..too deep.

Don't get me wrong..deep is good but for me it still needs to have some sense of direction to be considered a good body of work. This latest cd takes time to grasp because it seems like it is all over the place. If I had to guess, I would say the whole cd was put together over a long period of time. It's just not cohesive. But then again..that is a part of her Baduizm I suppose. Some great tracks nonetheless.

  • Sup Adrian! Yeah I am not knocking Erykah but I really could not get into her cd. I was like ok this is different. But to each is own. Soul Rebel, u should do a post on Ledisi! Her voice is crazy and her cd Lost and Found is the truth. We need more focus on these underrated artsist because BET ain't gonna do it! I see why alot of artists are going the independent route.

  • Peace Justice,

Only Ms. Badu can make a song about overcomming drug addiction sound as creatively beautiful as "The Hump"......

and smh@the lost talking about it's too "left/militant/intellectual" but then praise a man who's creativity compares a secret life to being "trapped in a closet" (how original, smh) or even how females remind them of vehicles....(lol)

Soldier is gonna be the next single, and it(well at least the first verse) is dedicated to her and Dre 3K's son Seven.

The album is refreshing, especially in a world where r&b content is limited to stagnantly limited to fucking, make-up/break-ups, and partying.
