Janet Comes Out on Top, Kelly Rowland and Kelis Try and Try Again

Posted on March 5, 2008 12:09 AM

Either all that Discipline paid off, or making nice with MTV goes a loooooong way because Janet has reportedly emerged at #1 on the charts, and is projected to have sold 178,000 copies.

I'm hearing that this is Ms. Jackson's first #1album since she dropped All For You in 2001. Personally I think it's no coincidence that Janet's ratings went down after Nipplegate - not that I'd call 20 Y.O. or Damita Jo fantastic albums, but I think they were better than sales reflected and I know that it had to hurt her not to get the usual MTV promo wave like she did this time around.

The rebel in me feels like she should have continued showing Viacom her middle finger, but ultimately I think making nice with the corporate powers that be might have been a necessary evil and at the end of the day after all our girl has been through -- I'm happy to see her taste success again. She works hard and deserves it. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit give the girl some credit, she has to keep up with her money-grubbing munchkin!

To be honest with you I've listened to Discipline but I haven't lived with it like I have with previous albums like janet or Velvet Rope . So far it's been kind of a workout album for me -- something to get me moving in the gym, and really I don't see anything wrong with that. Now Erykah's new album? Well, let me not get started because I'm trying to give Janet her moment and we will get around to Erykah soon enough. What y'all know about that cut "Telephone" though?

Anyway, enough Janet for now -- onto Kelly and Kelis and the albums they have coming this month (I just don't understand why they keep reissuing music hardly anybody bought the first time around)....

After all that fuss over Kelendria's re-release it turns out Ms. Kelly: Diva Deluxe will be released as a digital download. Yes you read me right. DIGITAL ONLY kids.

The new- errr- revamped album will be available online beginning Tuesday, March 25, complete with five new tracks as well as remixes of "Come Back" (Karmatronics Remix) and the Redline Remix of "Like This" featuring Eve.

Anyways here is what Kelly says about the project: "The tracks on Diva Deluxe are too hot to hold onto, so I decided to release them digitally so my fans could get into them as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys the new songs as much as I did recording them." (translation: somebody was too cheap to pay for the plastic CD covers because they think I probably won't sell enough to cover those costs).

Ms. Kelly: Diva Deluxe Track Listing
1. Daylight (featuring Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes)
2. Broken
3. Come Back (Karmatronics Remix)
4. Like This (Redline Remix)
5. Love Again
6. Unity
7. No Man No Cry

And in related albums nobody is really checking for, Kelis will drop her greatest hits set Kelis-The Hits next Tuesday March 11th. The 14-song collection will offer material from all four Kelis albums, Kaleidoscope, Wanderland, Tasty and Kelis Was Here. The compilation also includes Kelis collaborations with Ol' Dirty Bastard, Gnarls Barkley's Cee-Lo Green, André 3000 , N.E.R.D., Too $hort and British producer Richard X.

Former XXL music editor Leah Rose also pens an essay included in the project's liner notes.

As y'all know, Kelis was dropped by Jive last fall but the album is being released through Star Trak/Jive/Legacy.

Here is a complete track listing for The Hits:

1. Caught Out There
2. Milkshake
3. Got Your Money (w/Ol' Dirty Bastard)
4. Trick Me
5. Lil' Star (with Cee-Lo)
6. Get Along With You
7. Young, Fresh N' New Dance
8. Truth Or Dare (w/N.E.R.D)
9. Bossy (with Too $hort)
10. In Public (with Nas)
11. Millionaire (w/André 3000)
12. Finest Dreams (w/Richard X)
13. Suspended
14. Good Stuff

A rebel after my own heart, I'm probably one of the biggest Kelis fans on the face of the earth, but I gotta call this one like I see it. First of all they ought to be ashamed for titling this The Hits when only really 2 out of the 14 songs can be considered hits.

Second of all, I don't see a lot of folks copping this -- any true Kelis fan already owns all four of her albums (I know I do), and with gas prices high as they are I'd rather pay iTunes 99 cents to download the extra track. I mean, am I wrong?

Talk to me y'all!

  • Good Stuff Soul Rebel!

I am glad Janet at least made it to number 1! Anything less would have been embarassing for an icon of her status. But am I the only one who thinks those figures. Even 20 YO (great album btw!) sold almost 300,000 WITHOUT MTV promo. I predicted a long time ago that sadly this album will be her first not to go platinum and I think I'm gonna be right. smh. The numbers will only trail off after the 1st week.

I am too embarassed about Kelly to even comment on her. She seemed to have everything going for her but her efforts this time around have truly been pathetic. such a shame

I was surprised at the fact that I know and love all the "hits" on Kelis's album.Get Along With You was that ish back in the day.

Digital only albums are actually a really good route for the Myas and Christina Milians of this world. It can help an artist to finance themselves due to the extra low production costs. All they need to do is radio promo etc.

  • I am proud of kelly for not giving up... i must say that i never bought the first album... but since everyone kept giving er a hard time i purchased it... ALLL you who say it was a FLOP..... i agree but i dont think that it should have benn... WHEW!!! THE AlBUM is well put together start to finish.... MUCH BETTER than some other RNB LP'S dropped last year... I THINK SHE IS WORKING on NEW album... so she just wants to finish this project and get to her new one... if she keeps bombarding people with her she people will eventually do like me and see for themselves and purchase the album... all the nay sayers that believe kellys album was not good.. please go and purchase it... or go to you tube and listen to it... cause it is very good... and deserves a platnum treatment....

Everythings going digital anyways it's cheaper and it sends more money to the artist themselves

  • know your stuff before you post says...
  • Blogger should really know her stuff before she posts and realize that Kelis' fans are not these flip flop, watered down hip hop US fans that she is pushing this album to but to the European fan base that allows her albums to go platinum overseas with ease. And Kelly's release is strictly for the money. You got music you spent alot of money making, go to re-coup somehow.

    Blogger step your game up!

  • LMAO @ the ignorant poster above trying to get slick wid Soul Rebel. Yall always think that artists with a different sound who flop over here automatically become huge hits overseas (eg.Amerie, Kelis). These artists definitely do better over there than here but they still don't sell many albums over there so check yo dang facts fool. Kelis only has one album that went platinum overseas and that was 'Tasty'. All of her other albums have sold less than 1 million WORLDWIDE. (FYI 'platinum' in most European countries is less than 250,000 lol).
so know your ish before you post lol

I BET IF IT WERE BEYONCE, THAT BITCH WOULD HAVE DIGITAL DOWNLOADS, CDs, A COMPANION DVD AND ALL THAT.

As for Jermaine Dupri, he ain't even worth caps lock.

  • I agree with you on the Janet's album, Soul Rebel. It's cool, but it sorta reminds me of having one of your favorite meals with that certain ingredient missing. You like it it cuz it's your favorite meal, but it lacks something to make you feel like "DAMN this ish is good! Glad to see that she'll be on top of the charts though.

Erykah Badu's new cd is crazy...can't wait for the next installment.

I'm still kinda rooting for Kelly to get it together.

I'll be picking up that Kelis CD.

  • ACTUALLY 20 Y.O went to #1 and Damita Jo peaked @ #2... incidentally, Damita Jo was Janet's best album in the past 8 years.

And on why celebrities re-release albums, it's clear to me that they owe the record company at least one more project and the easy way to do that without spending a bunch of money is to re-release the garbage that didn't sell, or come out with a "greatest hits" compilation.. it still counts as an album and then you've fulfilled your contract.

Once you're done, you can leave the company for bigger and better things. Hopefully, this is the case with Kelly Rowlands CLUELESS, yet loyal ass!

The poster was trying to make folks realize that many of the songs on her greatest hits record were actually hits overseas which is why she included them on the album. And for the record, both Kelis and Kelly Rowland are very successful in the UK. The Kelis greatest hits album is probably more for her european fans anyway since thats where she experienced her most success. And why are you so concerned with other peoples record sells. Shouldn't you be working on finishing your album so that you can become that international superstar? When (more like if) your album finally does come out I hope it goes double plastic. You hateful BITCH!

  • Actually to the news unfriendly waaay above ^^^

    Janet is No1,

Dislodging Jack Johnson from the top after a three-week reign, Janet Jackson's "Discipline" bows at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The Island Def Jam set moved 181,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan, becoming the artist's sixth chart-topper.

Her last two Virgin albums, 2004's "Damita Jo" and 2006's "20 Y.O.," both debuted and peaked at No. 2, though "Damita" started with 381,000 while "20 Y.O." began with 296,000. Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (Brushfire) falls 1-3 with 92,000, a 12% sales decline.

    Taken from billboard.com

Pretty cool - I think veterans such as Ms Jackson deserve this.

Kelly Kelly Kelly...I wish more people would take time out to listen to her album but honestly speaking the tracks are too weak, she has this amazing voice but has been given crappy material.

As for Kelis :( never paid to much mind to her to be honest. Although that 'Millionaire' song was my song back in school! Thanks to AnDre300 of course!!
