The pair of producer/songwriters founded Philadelphia International Records in 1971 and are known for their work with R&B greats such as The O'Jays, Patti Labelle, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls and Billy Paul.

The two are responsible for 70 No. 1 pop and R&B singles, 175 gold, platinum and multi-platinum records, five Grammys and more than 3,500 songs to date.

"I have seen the power of music and it is real," Gamble said in a recent Reuters interview. "A great song's got to make people feel good. When all the elements come together and you say, 'Turn that up a little bit."

If you want that feel good feeling you can check out SAMPLOLOGY: The Philly Int'l Chapter a mix from SOHH-ful mix contributer DJ Parler (www.myspace.com/djparler).

SAMPLOLOGY: The Philly Intl Chapter was recorded in the legendary Philadelphia International Records studios and is hosted by Kenny Gamble and Bunny Sigler, the mix includes many Gamble & Huff hits, as well as the hip-hop and r&b songs that sampled them.

Material Mom, Madonna is also being inducted in tonight's ceremony, she has been selected in her first year of eligibility. Madonna will be inducted by pop star Justin Timberlake and Iggy & The Stooges will perform on her behalf.

Gamble & Huff will be the first honorees inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame under the Ahmet Ertegun Award, named in memory of the late co-founder of Atlantic Records. They are being inducted as non-performers, while Madonna, Leonard Cohen, the Dave Clark Five, John Mellencamp and the Ventures are being inducted as performers and late instrumentalist Little Walter is being inducted the "sideman" category for his "pioneering use of the microphone (that) helped establish the modern blues harmonica."

Artists become eligible for the Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first single or album and are represented in an exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Tonight's black tie induction ceremony will air live on both the VH1 Classic channel and also on MTV's Music High Definition: MHD channel, starting at 8:30 p.m.EST

  • I'm happy for both artist. They have certainly mad an impact on R&B and Pop music. But from my understanding, both Donna Summers and Chic were nominated for induction this year as well. Those two artist had a great impact on dance music and they kinda open the door and had direct influence on Madonna. She herself is a big Donna Summers fan and she liked Chic so much that she had Nile Rodgers (founding member of the group) produce her breakout album "like a virgin". I love Madonna and I definately feel she should be inducted but I just feel that Chic and Donna Summers deserved it first.

  • Yeah I noticed Chic & Donna Summer were passed over for Madonna, I think Beastie Boys and Afrika Bambataa were nominated as well.

See thats my problem with the Rock and Roll hall of fame commitee. Its not fair that people who were eligable first are still being passed over for people who came after them. Donna released her first record in the early 70s, which means she was eligable in the LATE 90s! She should have been in many moons ago! Madonna came out in 83 so she just reached eligability status this year and she's already in. I don't understand it.

  • Good that Gamble and Huff are getting the recognition they definitely were responsible for some classic soulful songs coming out of Philadelphia. Like others said I don't see why Madonna got it before people like Donna Summer etc. but you know how it goes. It's political too in some cases.

  • Since this is an rnb/soul blog why didn't you mention Patti Labelle's amazing performance of 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' at the event? All the news outlets have been praisng her performance, but you make no mention of it, and go on and on about Madonna who has nothing to do with rnb/soul.
