Allow Me to Introduce Myself: SOHH Soul Rebel Knocks News of Hov/Mary J. Collabo Album

Posted on March 3, 2008 10:00 AM

As many of you know, last Friday marked the end of the SOHH Soulman reign. I've been a longtime friend and follower of Soulman's, so I know I have some very large shoes to fill and I will do my best to bring you the latest and greatest the R&B/soul game has to offer on a daily basis.

That said, I guess I need to go ahead and introduce myself. Consider me SOHH's Soul Rebel -- I loooooooooove being different, so expect the unexpected. My listening tastes vary -- from Sade to Joi to Mariah Carey --- Jill Scott to Lloyd-- Erykah Badu to Trey Songz-- and that's just the beginning of the list. I even dig blue eyed soulsters Robin Thicke, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse and Justin Timberlake. I don't like being put in a box so I don't plan to put you in one either. I believe sharing is caring, so expect plenty of new videos, music links and downloadable mixes. With that said, I'd rather show you than tell you how I do so let's get right into it.

As you probably know by now, this month kicks off the Jay-Z/Mary J. Blige 25 date "Heart of the City Tour." Jay's obviously a marketing master because last week a collaboration between the two called "Your Welcome" was leaked.

Word on the streets is that this is won't be the last of the duets from these two this year -- it's rumored that Hov and the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul plan to do an entire album together, a la Best of Both World's minus the pepper spray and the porn scandal.

Being that the first time Jiggaman got with Mary they created a classic:

I personally believe they should leave well enough alone. This new track can't touch "Can't Knock The Hustle," and the only thing an album full of overcooked collaborations is going to do is further piss off the purists in both camps. It has gimmick written ALL OVER IT. Sorry Mary, love ya girl but this one smells like a stinker...

Talk to me y'all!

  • Soul Rebel welcome to Sohh girl : )

I agree with you on the gimmicky aspect of a duet album and that 'Welcome' song is wack to me. 'Turn off the lights' was much better.

Best of luck to you and get ready for the hate. This blog is full of homo thugs (eg.Jono aka Jonathon etc) who will jump on you like dogs on dead meat and call you a hater just for breathin. smh. Hold your head up and do you at all times

I have to disagree about the Jay/Mary collabos...True, Cant Knock The Hustle will FOREVER be that joint...they have also dropped some nice music over the years...Rock Steady, Can't Hide from Love...think they got it in 'em to come with that heat...

  • Welcome Soul Rebel! Can't wait to read more of your blogs. Anyway, not feeling the new Mary and Jay song. It's borderline wack. Most of Swizz's stuff has been sounding too much alike lately. And that's sad, 'cause I like him.

  • Welcome to the dungeon! LOL

For real I agree with you about the Mary/Jigga thing. I don't hear a whole album with him and Mary - "Can't Knock the Hustle" is a soundtrack for our lives during that time. They both are still great but too far advanced and Hollywood to beinig doing this played out gimmick!

Imma be checkin' in on you from time to time.... You dope as fuck so it's all good.

As for Mary & Jay... I think it's a downgrade for Mary. No disrespect to Hov.

  • I'll be different and say I liked the song. Yeah the beat wasn't original but I don't expect much from Swizz. I'm not looking forward to a Jay/Mary album though that best of both worlds shit is watered down. Oh and welcome Soul Rebel!

  • Welcome Soul Rebel! Good Luck to Ya!

As for Jay-Z And Mary..Past hits aside, I never really thought these two artists had good synergy. Maybe it's me but there's not chemistry where these two are concerned.

We're all expecting big things from you so make sure you keep us updated on all the new and current music and keep this blog interesting like Soulman did. Oh yea and please keep the hate to a minimum. I know u'll probably ride or die for ur favorite artists, but dont drag an artist down just cuz u dislike em. Best of Luck Miss Rebel!

Be on the lookout for Gyant, he's the flaming gay blogger of Sohh ATL. Rumor has it, he's gonna catch that monster later this year. And don't hang out after working hours with Sohh Skeetz, the You Heard blogger. It's only a matter of time before she has you in a bukkae with 10 homeless niggas inside a abandoned basement.

  • What up girl! I'm pretty new to sohh myself, and the sohh soulful blog is a favorite, so I wish you much sucess...I think that Mary J and Hov is a good combination for a couple of songs...they've both grown in their music, so it would be interesting to hear some new stuff, but i think a whole album is overkill

  • REAL TRU 2 LIFE MARY FAN says...
  • I can tolerate a few singles here and there from Jay and Mary...but an entire collabo album is soo unnecessary that every track would have to be far above and beyond anything that they've ever done in order for me to get into it. And right now, this 'Your Welcome' thingy is a good tune but it aint $12 cd material.
