Lauryn Hill dipped in to Brooklyn last night for a free concert.

It was packed... most of the fans watched the performance from outside of the park's gates as the sound echoed through Brooklyn.

Is it me or does Lauryn never look happy when performing. I hate to say it, but I think she's done. All this anticipating folks been doing for damn near 10 years now and for what?
This is on the real...Lauryn Hill is not just an entertainer because she transcends that title and music, for that matter. She issues social commentary and when the rest of you were hating on her in the last interview that she gave, you all failed to realize that what she was saying came from a very sincere but perhaps jaded place. She is not, and never will be, a Beyonce...a very talented artist, but one so polished that she appears like a robot at times. No, that is not Ms. Hil. Instead, she is exists as the embodiment of the modern black woman, one who despite her status as a renowed recording artists, feels the weight of the nihilism that affects so many of her people. She is not on drugs (none besides weed, that is); she is just weary!

I can care less about ms. hill...but I have to admit she's not that entertaining anymore...she acts like she is prince or somebody....and please dont make any excuses your gurls washed up...Beyonce is talented, beautiful, and gets paper...but i do agree their is no comparison...one last thing when your famous and have a god given talent you need to appreciate that not act like your life is so stressful and make your fans feel like it's a privilage to see you perform...
Now me and Ms. Hill aren't seeing eye-to-eye right now...but I'm still rooting for her. The sheer fact that she came out with one solo album (we won't count the unplugged album for obvious reasons) and can still do a world tour with it 10 years later is a testimony in and of itself.
If she wanted to she could lyrically destroy almost all the current rappers (male or female) out here.
She just really needs to get it together and put out another classic. I know she's capable underneath all that crazy. I see the diamond, it just needs to be repolished.

Who are any of us to judge what is going on with Lauren Hill? It's easy to say what a person should do when you are NOT that person.

I agree with all of you who tell the unenlighted few to become conscious....When I seen Lauryn Hills interview it was obvious that she is enlightened. Her comments were thought provoking. When is the last time you heard Beyonce, Eve, Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, or anyone who is commercialized say anything that made you think. It is a shame that most people don't take the time to make conscious decisions. You call all who turn down the prospect of millions crazy (i.e. Dave Chappelle. He is the Lauryn Hill of comedy). At some point you have to ask yourself; is it me I am living for or is it the money. Everyone is not driven by the dollar. Some are driven by passion. And when it seems like the dollar will prevail they take a step back. You may get paid to entertain, but if you don't find your life entertaining anymore how can you do your job? Think about it !

I think as black people we should get off the mental habit of seeing our stars fall apart : we have subconsciously built unvoiced expectations when it comes to our aching idols and in a way or anorher, we tend to predict their failure. Yes Lauryn has been in the news very much lately so have the haters. In all this, the only thing that is undeniable is that there are two clear groups of persons : the ones that despise Ms. Hill and use all types of excuses such as her particular makeup or her rasby voice ; and the others who've simply tried to see the human being behind the mask and relate to the vulnerability and the healing process she's going through. Hate it or love it, when it comes to depht and content, we all know Lauryn is unmatched.
It's all on us to know where we stand and what we expect from music in its pure artistic and emotional expression.

Lauryn’s recent interview was insightful and her analogies on everything she talked about were very informative. She is very articulate and smart; you don’t find people like that in Hollywood. I mean most of the things Lauryn talked about in her recent interview make a lot of sense. Lauryn’s concerns about the current state of hip hop are so true and most people feel the same even Oprah had a forum on this issue and we all know that the current state of hip hop and RnB is horrendous; too much commercialisation which is really out order, women’s portrayal of sex gimmick images, and the non-sensical lyrical content which is pretty dump. I mean male hip hop artists are such a disgrace to the black communities not only in America but across the globe, female RnB stars have truly lost their identities they are true puppets of the entertainment corporations. It is really sad to see these things happening. We need to discuss such issues in order to deal with the racism and sexism that has characterised the entertainment industry. Some of the issues she talked about in the interview have been addressed by black political activists and other concerned black education forums and not only in America but across the globe. Lauryn cannot be ostracized for being smart and knowledgeable and people must not confuse her intelligence with craziness or racism.
Americans are so caught up in a materialistic world and they are forever supporting artists that worship vanity. I mean the fact that artists like Rihanna, Beyonce, Fergie, Jay Z, Justine Timberlake, 50cents; Nelly, etc can top the Billboard charts it says a lot about the weaknesses of the current state of the music industry in general. I am still trying to figure out why people are so concerned about her outfits do they want her to dress like Beyonce or Britney Spears? People somebody educate me on this one I really need answers. Just a reminder Lauryn has always had her own personal style even during the Fugees and the Miseducation area, she never followed any fashion trends she developed her own style that defined who she is. It is really a shame to see so many journalists crashing her like that, this is what I call irresponsible journalism, I used to think journalists are educated and their information is based on pure research I guess I was wrong.
I cannot believe some of the idiotic comments posted by some journalists on the overall review of Lauryn‘s concerts. It is so amazing how soon we forget, I mean 9 years ago every article was so positive about Lauryn I mean journalists would call her all sorts of high-quality names that she is naturally beautiful, has charisma, intelligent, the most versatile artist of her generation, inspirational, you know what I mean. She disappears from the limelight to become a mother, fans beg her to comeback, suddenly when she decides to come back we call her crazy and all sorts of derogatory names. I am still trying to find out what is all this hate on Lauryn. To top it all I am really surprised by some people claiming that she is racist when we all know that this was a malicious rumour which was unfounded. I just realise everyday that Americans are ignorant and stupid, I have never seen anywhere in any country where an artist with a political substance and with what Lauryn represents gets disregarded it is shocking. I am so lucky to come from a country like South Africa we might be called a Third World Country but we are indeed an educated nation, artists like Lauryn are highly celebrated and seen as great role models due to their knowledge, political substance and how they embrace their roots and culture because culture defines who we are. It is a damn shame. I remember when Oprah was asked why did she not build a school in America she highlighted some crucial facts that when you go to the poorest cities in America and ask young kids what would you buy them they say I-pods, Nike Sneakers and Cellphones. When you ask them what they want to be when they grow up they want be rappers. But she said in South Africa it was a different case all together poor black kids want school uniform, money to but school books and money for high school and tertiary education. This clearly shows that the Americans society is characterised by materialism and very delusional (pure ignorance on world politics).

I don't agree with all the bad reviews of lauryn's performance. Yes she came out late (1.5 hours) ... but that's very common of outdoor concerts. And I admit I came to the show alittle worried based on reading all these blogs. But I was happily surprised and I thought it was a great show!! What kind of superstar artist do you know that will have a FREE... i repeat FREE concert and perform for over 2 hours. And come back and do 4 more songs on encore.That's love. She gave her all in that performance. Most artist would come out... sing 8 songs and be done for the night. And for the quality oft he songs... no she didn't sound like she did on the record but that's how live music is. Americans are so used to pre-recorded lipsung performances that they get upset if it doesn't sound like their ipods. But she is an innovator and you can see she's playing with new sounds and genres of music. So if you are not used to thinking outside the box and being open to new sounds, then you wouldn't be able to appreciate it. There's a lot more rock, punk and funk in her music now then there was before. But watch in 2/3 years. People will be copying her sound. But I guess that's why she does her tours in Europe instead of America... we're too close minded. I just hope she keeps making music. Because I love her.
