But fast forward and chica has got a ton of magazine covers, high profile appearances and three videos including this new one:
are we really to believe rihanna is now directing her own videos?

Don't get me wrong, she's a hot girl. But why is she really killing it abroad, but not here at 'home?'

Because here in the UK we are used to having people who can't sing release records. That is all the record companies do over here. White people here love listening to people who make pop music because they can't dance. All they do is jump, so that is why they like that music.
Even though she is number one or whatever, she still doesn't have many sales here. She can't touch Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen on the charts.
Oh and lets face it, Rihanna has been surviving on huge hype. Hype ain't gonna carry you if you can't sing. I never did understand how she got by in a place like America because you lot seem to love people who can sing. most of yall hit it on the head... ppl in europe like to hear different stuff, while americans follow the same shit over and over again.... when u go overseas, their music is more diverse... a lot of the time real music like teedra moses, and artists tend to sell better overseas... american artists better realize that they can get a good start in those european countries... its a bigger market anyway... ppl dont even kno that kelis and other supposedly "d list" american artists are big stars overseas...

I disagree. Americans don't just eat everything up the same way they do abroad. Peeps abroad love anything American. So I don't mean to sound like a cocky American but WE determine what's hot! Not the other way around. If that was the case we would be biggin up all their artists. And with the exception of Winehouse, we just don't find the Brits artists to be all that! So if they want to worship our B or C-List artists thats their business.
It could be cuz people's tastes are just different across the countries...
Alot of blacks in the UK are of caribbean descent whereas black Americans are usually of African descent...perhaps Rihanna gets some support being from Barbados/Guyana...

Okay... her album is really not that hot. I bought the album and I don't understand what the big deal is. Also, she's releasing all of the wrong singles. "Umbrella" was good but "Shut Up and Drive" was basically a kiss-off to all her black fans and "Don't Stop the Music" is boring techno crap. Plus, the video for those two songs are wack.
She really needs to release "Breakin' Dishes" or "Sell Me Candy." Come to think of it... "Lemme Get That." I heard that her fourth single is going to be "Hate That I Love U" with Ne-Yo. Ummm... not a good look. It recycles the drums from "Sexy Love" and sounds like all the other stuff Ne-Yo writes, especially "So Sick."
Also... the Brits are just a lot more accepting. Looks at Kelis. I wish Rihanna all the luck, though. But I really still think she has a lot of growing to do and even though she claims this is her "rebellious" album, it still feels like she being controlled and trying to be too much of a people pleaser. Umbrella was the number one song in the country for seven straight weeks. I wouldn't exactly call that a failure but her new cd is much much different from her previous two and that could have her old fans, such as me a little taken back. Thats why I haven't bought her new CD. Its like a new artist and every artist changes and has that right to but, that won't mean her core audience will automatically change with her. I liked her first album the best cause i'm just into that Caribbean feel. No ill feelings about her, she just outgrew my musical taste.
