Kelly Rowland Hates Being Black Barbie, Wished She Wasn't So Dark

I've been debating all morning whether or not to mention this.

According to Page Six, Kelly Rowland 'use' to hate being coco brown, she'd rather be high yella like Beyonce.

"It's said that brown-skinned girls don't sell magazines and that's so sad," the sexy songbird tells next month's Essence. "I remember wishing I was more fair-skinned, but Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom, would say, 'Don't you know how beautiful you are?' She made me come into my brown beauty. I didn't get it, but now I do. I am chocolate and beautiful and loving it."

Lies. Is it only me that see that wanting to be something you could never be.... during the most formative years of your life, shapes everything you will ever be?

See... I ain't hating on her, she is. LOL! I AM JUST KIDDING! Lighten up.

Scoop that new Essence to read the story in context.

In the meantime check the hard working Kelly performing "Comeback" on AOL.

Oh, poor Kelly. :( Well, I love her and her whole dark chocolate being! lol

That performance is excellent. The band is great, too. Wow!

u know its sad to say but it is true wat she said but its great to see tha she's realized that she's a beautiful dark woman an she can be the role model for the dark little girls who wish that they were light skinned

a lot of darkskinned ppl felt and feel that way.in places like panama about 8 yrs ago dark employees had to use the back enrance at a hotel like it's early 60's but i know a beautiful mixed girl who is insecure about being so light and always wanted 2b drk like her siblings Black is Beautiful there's sumn for evrybody how many races can boast that

oh yeah that performance is great it looks like she enjoys performing tht song an it shows that she can hol her own yeah watch her Q and A section on the aol sessions u can tell how sweet she is

It is said because we as black people and especially African American women still have that slave mentality. that was used to keep blacks apart it called divide and conquor Make the dark skin blacks and light skin blacks hate each other and visce versa and today alot of African American women still go through this and it affects their self esteem.

Ms Kelly in stores now

I c where kelly might have ben cumn from cuz our yung black children r so brainwashed 2 think that they arent beutiful because of the skin color and that they must b sumthn they r nt or kiss tha white man's behind n order 2 b acceptd n this society. Thats y u c so many blackz nt claimn their race bt n order 2 feel acceptd they say "oh im nt black bt half or mixed..." altho tha whole world will always c u as black. Bt im glad she realiyzed her beauty as a black woman.

I'm a high yella woman With reddish brown hair. I always got alot of flack from darker skinned women and still do till this day. It's sad. My mama was black (brown might I add) my daddy was black too (high yella, that's where i get it from). Somebody in the lineage was creepin over to the other side maybe that's where the light skin come from. But all in all I know I'm black. But to some black folks I aint black enough and to whites I'm black no matter what, it don't matter. I'm married and got three kids. One of my girls is brown skin and so pretty. I let her know that everday. Because I want her to have high self esteem and confidence about herself. I don't want her to have the same issue as Kelly and alot of other dark skin people have. And that's real.

what kelly is sayin is sad but true, people tend to believe and buy lighter skin artist cds...look at the sells..by the way

i do believe thats wrong though you should be cs or music base on just that the music nothin more nothin less.

It's a sad day in the history of africans when we don't understand the importance of melanin in the skin.I'm a chocolate brotha and i can withstand the sun without turning red,i don't know about you folks but i'd rather be dark than light anyday.I know that those family roots are strong and no massa raped my ancestors from my knowledge(might be wrong though, them whites are sneaky). Bottom line kelly that skin is beautiful suga!

She's beautiful. She has no reason to be ashamed of being dark.....

Just when I thought I couldn't lose anymore respect for you and your "journalism" style, you reach an even deeper low...

The headline "Kelly Hates Being Black Barbie, Wished She Wasn't So Dark" is misleading and irresponsible.

If you read the article, you see that she once felt that way as a child. Your headline should say, "Kelly Once Hated Being Black Barbie, Has Learned to Love Herself".

I, for one, took the time to actually read her quote for myself to see what it was about, but for ppl that just see the headline, they walk away thinking that Kelly is self-hating and unsure of herself. And quite frankly, that is not fair.

And you wonder why you are getting no love from the Knowles/SONY camp?

That’s not true, there are much more successful dark skinned artists than light, and if not, I would call it even, people like Akon, 50 Cent, Diddy, Outkast, Biggie, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Kelly Rowland, are just a few of the dark skinned artists that dominate the music industry, in different genres. Neyo is dark and Bobby Valentino is of a light complexion, and people would buy a Neyo album over Bobby any day. So what your saying is wrong, black people dominate the music industry in a huge way, and most of them are dark skinned, doesn’t hurt their record sales, if it did why would so many of them go platinum???

wassup Britney,

i understand where your comin from, you right all those people you named are and have sold..but like prettybrownbrown said the media has brainwashed us to believe that light skin is better than dark skin...matter of fact it been like that for years..think about it...and kelly said it herself..."It's said that brown-skinned girls don't sell magazines and that's so sad," the sexy songbird tells next month's Essence....again she once felt like that..and all im sayin is thats not fair and that shouldn't be the case..we should buy music base on music, not on skin color or anthing like that. i like akon just like i like robin thicke music. to me music is music, color doesn't play a factor, but i understand where you comin from...1 love

I think that Kelly looks better than any other girl singing right now. Her being dark-skinned is what makes her look claasy, if you ask me. I've always said the Kelly was the nicest one in the group. It a damn shame when someone as fine as Kelly would think twice about wanting to look different. Regular dark-skinned don't even stand a chance. Since when did Black not = beautiful.

first she faints....and now shes complaining about being dark skinned. this girl will do anything for record sales.

"Lies. Is it only me that see that wanting to be something you could never be.... during the most formative years of your life, shapes everything you will ever be?"

its just you and your insecure ass, im actually sad for you nigga. as for kelly she just fell into the white medias trap of what beauty is. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, and if you dont think so, eat a dick and die slow.

HA HA.."Beyonce" is talking trash. lol. However, I agree. The Title is Misleading. Yes it did get me to read this but there are a lot of people that dont read. And you CANNOT tell me different. So like previously stated. You need to edit that title, so you aren't putting words in Kelly's mouth. There is a difference between past tense and present tense. Get Your Mind Right. I'm Just Saying...

Kelly can get it!

^^^ the sohh readers will always think your an idiot to reply to a subject like this while showing us your grammar

obviously the media plays a big part in this making it seem that light skinned girls are mo beautiful than dark ones magazine covers and television are the main calprits.

but in actual fact beauty is beauty black white yellow or brown.

go listen

the title need to be changed.

"SAY IT LOUD....I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!" - JAMES BROWN

Don't forget Michael Jacksons best selling album in the history of music-"Thriller" happened when the brother was still brown-skinned. So his talent shone through regardless, even MTV had to play his videos becoz he was an unstoppable force.

"as for kelly she just fell into the white medias trap of what beauty is. "

paranoid black people.. when will you learn? media is mostly white in america because for the time being, america is mostly white... wait until hispanics are the majority and watch media change (not saying it's a bad thing, but just watch). quit blaming whitey for girls being insecure, you think pale girls don't want a nice 'tan'? BLAME WHITEY!

That's the problem with society, the media likes 2 impose THEIR vision of beauty upon people, causing some 2 be conceited @ the same time, giving others low self esteem, leaving them feeling like their not attractive, MAN FUCK THAT!!!!

If U're blacker than a trillion midnights, be proud of that, Kelly looks better than Beyonce anyway

This explains why Kelly is so scared to step out of Beyonce's shadow. I'm sure that Beyonce's mega success as a solo artist versus Kelly's mediocre reception has re-hashed those feelings of her wanting to be lighter. This is something that affects a lot of black people and keeps a lot great talent hidden. Its surprising but also very sad at how many people are suffering from low self-esteem and other social issues in 2007 based on skin color. Just think about how many times a darker skinned person is referred to as being tar, crispy, black, and ugly by other BLACK people.

It's sad that mentality is still prevalent in Black people. Kelly is a sexy-ass brown-skinned girl. But I know a lot of sistas who feel that way about themselves.

Although to be fair, darkskinned people ran the game for a long time, brightskinned people in hip-hop R&B didn't get hot again until Nelly, Beyonce and T.I. blew up.

im actually glad that mama knowles told her that she is beautiful. where the hell was kelly's mama? why couldnt kelly's mother tell her that she was beautiful? that matters, her mother wasnt even there, didnt the knowles clan adopt kells? im not sure if kells is even over it... its so many other black girls who want to be lighter and are doing crazy shit to be that... blacks jus need to learn to unite and teach our children that we all are beautiful cuz we all the same...

fuck trying to live by white standards of beauty black people should have high self esteem yeah michael jackson always hated himself and look what he done had numerous nosejobs, bleached his skin and deserted his race married 2 white sluts another diss to black people. black girls secretly wanna be white girls they do this by dying their hair blonde, how many black girls dyed their hair beyonce, mary j, lil kim, faith evans, too many more.

also black people are fucking themselves up by getting lipo, nosejobs, and implants I see no reason why some fine sisters like vivaca, and halle got nosejobs helll even wendy williams fat ass was cuter before surgery.

I think that Kelly is insecure with herself overall but I definitely think skin color plays a major role in her success when compared to her former band mate. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't ex DC member Farrah say something about having to tan so that she wouldn't appear to be as light as Beyonce? If this is true and I say "if" then it's no wonder that Kelly has insecurities. What kind of message are you sending to an adolescent girl? In essence you are saying that the lighter skinned girl is supposed to stick out? Just my thoughts.

Yes Vanity u are right. Farrah said it in a Vibe magazine years ago, Tina Knowles told her to get a tan. Sad but true and I believe that skin color does play a role in a lot of show business mainstream society. WOuld Beyonce be this hot mainstream if she was darker? Just a thought STANS fall the fck back! lol!

Although I still do appreciate your blog soulman, I used to like it better before because now I find it has more of a negative undertone...

when will we stop runnin from the truth? damn it am pissed. some1 said that loads of black dark skinned ppl are succesful and u named BLACK MALES, the thing is this commercial industry is MUCH LESS FORGIVING FOR DARK BLACK SISTAS DAMN IT. AND IT PISSES ME OFF TO THE POINT OF SH!T!N MASELF!!! how much more stupid can u get????? she wished she was a lighter skinned 'sister' not person but sister! damn it. now let me give u the names of the successful black females out there - beyonce, rihanna, amerie, fair enough mary j blige may have made it and nuf respect to her but she aint that dark and also tell me. lauryn hill was successful but she was never seen as that loveley sex symbol or beautiful woman that they praise exotic light skinned females for. so there, I SAID IT. and sure there's rappers 2 - missy sells - but if she even tried selling sexy sultry feminine stuff - u think it would sell???? she conforms to black stereotypes - i love me some missy - but i'd like to see a missy on some beyonce shit. and sho we got lil kim - but hey we all know the blonde barbie syndrome she caught on2 once she realised how tough it was. now what u gon' do for me washin our dirty laundry infront of these white folk?

I am confused here, people keep saying media this media that. I think that is only a reflection of what a lot of people believe. Black people have been far more critical of my darker skinned complection than any white person I have ever met. Yeah yeah, I know the slave mentality...blah blah. I'm sick of it. We are our worst critics! And though I dont wish to be lighter skinned, I do really wish that we as a people could love ourselves including the dark and coarser haired females. Not just light-skinned females that might be mixed or have wavy hair. Get it together people!

I just have to say one more thing. The "I got indian in my family" quote. That irks the hell out of me. Native Americans dont seem quite as proud. Has anybody ever wondered why so many (approx. 95%)American black people have Native American blood, yet are not able to participate or join any reservations or legally claim many rights to ancestry even today? They were pretty much forced to betray - us by guess who - and sold us out! Read about it!

Kelly Rowland and Oprah wished to be light skin.Brown skin and dark skin black girls that wish to be light skin blacks should go to the school counselor or a psychiatrist.I'm a light skin black. If a dark skin or brown skin black girl bleaches her skin she'll still be black.

Beyonce's not "yellow" she's brown skin.
