I seem to remember back in Sept., during 20 Y.O.'s first week (before the sales numbers) people were giving the album props left and right. Not really saying it was classic Janet, but def. not panning it the way people have been since its commercial "failure." I personally think it was a solid album, but nothing exceptional. Still, "Call On Me" was a terrible choice for lead single, but "So Excited" is easily one of the best dance singles Janet has had in years, and there's really no reason that shouldn't have been more of a success. In any case, I love Janet, but I have to say, I'm really disappointed in her lack of agency in career of late. I feel like I'm always hearing JD or someone else talking about what Janet needs to do to get back on top, and I rarely, if ever, hear Janet address the direction of her career. She never really found success in her earlier years until she grew a pair and started making her own career decisions, and now it just seems like she's comfortable w/ being told what to do. Janet's judgement tends to be fairly on point, for instance "Enjoy" is widely considered to be one of the strongest tracks on 20 Y.O., and that was the only track penned by Janet, Terry, and Jimmy alone. In the end, I think Janet can't win either way. When she does get it right (So Excited, All Nite, I Want You), radio and MTV play her to the left.

As much as I bump JD's r&b tracks, I think his production exposed Janet's singing ability.

As for Polow saying JD only makes radio hits, Wasn't it just 15 months ago you could go to a damn club without hearing a damne Franchize track? Polow is doing his thing, but JD been killing the clubs for a decade now.

I actually liked 20 Y.O. It wasn't filled with hits, but there are definately some hits on there that were never released. Someone, I don't know who, just gave up on the album after first week sales were not out of this world. Ain't nothing wrong with a slow burn. Just ask Robin Thicke and Corrin Bailey Rae. Release of another good track could have propelled CD sales forward.

An artist like all other human beings has three dimensions: the physical, the spiritual, and the mental. An artist mental perceptions of themselves is generated out to the world in the form of neuro-linguistic signals we as the public perceive as tangible reality.

I am saying all of that to say this: Janet's last three albums, and really if you want to look at it even with the inception of Velevet Rope in my opinion has waivered drastically.

Janet herself has always said that she writes about what is going on in her life at any given time, so it is no suprise at the time when she is longing for romantic love, having crisis after crisis with weight, battling the media over artistic expression that all of that would show up in her music; as lack of focus and direction and poor record sales.

When anyone feels less than powerful everything in their life tends to suffer.

Also based on her battle with weight, surgery, skin alterations it to me seems like myself, Janet has suffered from self image. She has also mentioned facing a lot of prejudice and racism in her daily and professional life. I am a gay black male (well sometimes I wonder about the gay thing when I see some hotties of the opposite sex) but I am not a DL brother would never do that to my sisters, with me what you see is what you get. So it is known that I am a gay man and proud of respecting my self and others.....)anyway all of this negative energy has affected her career.

On the other hand there is no competition God had given us all gifts and talents. We should be able to utilize those particular talents as long as it serves the universe...yes it would be great for Janet to take some solid stand/ direction, to re-invent herself once in a while, to stay focused on what the fans in their entirety wants...but most of all it will be the most beneficial to her to truly come to a space that we all have to face, and that is of self-worth and hapiness.

Try as you may you cannot give what you do not have...someone like Madonna who has never waivered or faultered and never really looked to no one to sustain her talent. She has never really begged for people to like here, she truly puts her best forward and if you like it or if you don't; but you can never argue the quality. she has just won several dance awards from the world music organization so globally she is on top and almost worth a billion dollars.

Even a person with a simple basic checking account must diversify funds to maximize their holdings so Janet has to diversify as an entertainment entity to come to full fruition as an artist.

In closing: I have and we all have been guilty of putting too much pressure on the shoulders of artist. They have to move us, make us dance, make us feel sexy, make us happy or make us cry...and if they fall short of that we complain and critique them endlessly....well we have to be in charge of our own hapiness.

When is the last time you jotted anything down on paper when you were feeling low, or came up with a little jingle to whisper in a lovers ear to get them in the mood...not too easy hah..so we should cut each other some slack.

As hard as it sometimes being black, gay and beautiful in the south I would not trade it for the word...black people are some of the most beautiful, sexy, vibrantly historic creatures to ever walk this earth..and I am blessed and thankful to be counted...

I have to start by saying that I will support Janet in whatever route she decides to take for this next album. I believe that probably the best thing for her to do is to kind of shy away from the whole hip-hop-rap feel and maybe gear the new album towards pop-dance-soul. Janet has always been in the R&B genre but I've noticed that most of the singles that become well-known are all poppy-catchy-dance tunes. (All Nite, All For You, Doesn't Really Matter, Someone to Call my Lover, to name a few) If she releases a catchy pop-dance album with a catchy-dance tune as the first single, and uses HOT choreography for the video. she'll definitely show everyone that she's BACK!

Idk what pplz problems are. If Janet wants to continue to make music let her do what the heck she wants to do. Why should her age stop her from doing what she loves??? And for the every ignorant person, by US standards 40 is MID-AGE. Janet doesn't have to sell millions of albums, she's paid her dues as an artist and she can do whatever the heck she wants to do. It doesn't matter if she sells 10 albums, she's still Janet Jackson and has the respect of just about every person in the music industry. Rhythm Nation outsold Emotions, Janet outsold Butterfly, and there are more. Damita Jo may not have been as successful as her previous albums, but that album is still platinum, with mediocre radio hits which is unheard of. 20 YO didn't sell as well because it was an R&B ALBUM. Had it been pop, it would have sold millions. And the fact that the album is gold is recognized as a success in the R&B genre. JANET JACKSON SHOWING HER TITTY AT THE SUPERBOWL WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THE SUPERBOWL IN ABOUT 10 YEARS!!!! In addition, it is probably one of the most memorable events in the history of the Superbowl. I watched the superbowl that year, and I surely dont remember who won, much less who was even playing. All I remember is Janet's titty. Even though Janet may have been blacklisted by the hypocrite, MTV, she still has star power. She opened the Billboard Music Awards (might I add she has more Billboard Music Awards than ANY other artist), her cover of US Weekly is the BEST SELLING issue in the magazine's history. We can also discuss how EVERY Janet album since Control has either won a Grammy or been nominated for one. Every Janet album since Control has produced at least TWO OR MORE #1 singles on one of Billboard's charts. We can further discuss how she was the most search person on the internet in 2006, and i can pretty much guarantee that the fitness book she is writing will be on NY's Best Sellers list.. With this new album coming up in the near future and media coverage surrounding the album at its early stages, it is a testament that she will be right back in the public's eye.

I like Janet and I have read all of the comments listed. The only thing I can honestly say is that - Yes, Janet is in competition with the younger artist out there. Any artist in any field whether it be acting, singing, modeling, etc.. is in competition. That's what its all about. Does anyone honestly think that Janet would stay on the throne without ANYONE trying to steal her thunder? PLEASE. There's money out there to make and you'de better bet that the young ones are hungry. Now, I don't think Janet should view herself as being in competition, but she's smart and knows that it's a numbers game and its reality. EVERYONE wants the number one spot. So, unfortunately, it is a competition- I just hope janet brings all she can to the game.

I got one song for you that trumps all her former shit, "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" I know she is a legend and all that (respect due) but at some point all OGs get retired. You saw Mike get his ankles broke by AI. Willie Mays could barely make it to first base. Roy Jones -- I can't even type the words. At some point you have to put down the mic or else somebody younger, fresher, check Nas' "I Gave You Power", ("a newer me in better shape . . ."), will come out and retire your ass. That is why yes Ms. Jackson, who ain't made shit dope in a loooonngggg minute, will have to compete with these young hot ladies. That is the way of the world. I bought 20y.o., mainly cuz she was back to looking fine as hell and I was sucked in, but I knew she was going down hill on "All for You" when she started sampling Luther. Whitney was losing it too when she began to sample others. True artistic geni don't have to bite, check Prince. They just keep reinventing themselves with original art. And yes Michael will have to compete with Justin, Usher and Chris Brown. Because they are what's considered hot right now. You have your run and gracefully bow out or you get shut down by the next gen and if her new shit don't sell that means that she has not successfully reached the masses as she once did. No shame in that if your product is dope, like Prince continues to spit fire but doesn't sell, yet his concerts consistently sell out. 20 Y.O. was bad compared to Janet's previous standards, but I don't hate her for trying. The one comeback kid who did it big was Jay-Z, and I am not even talking about sales. Kingdom Come was quality mature hip hop. Many heads ain't ready for that but if your music does not grow up it sounds silly. 38 year old Jay-Z couldn't make a Reasonable Doubt now, but what he's talking about now resonates and he is clearly the best Still Relevant Rapper Alive (Rakim is better but no longer puts out music).

I don't see why yall get'n upset over jd say'n he made janet flopp and polow can get her back in the clubs......If I can recall it's janet's name on these projects, if her ass wouldn't cut producers and chose some decent songs to release then she wouldn't be in this situation.......It ain't nobody's fault but the artist with also no help from the record label

BTW I want to add too, that this next album ciuld possibily make her and break her....I mean she's barely holding her head above water now.....If she don't pull out a good one this time, my guess is she wants to settle down and just focus on something else>>>Because you can always love what you do but your heart has to be in it too.

Legallee, what are you talking about when you say that when you heard Janet sample Luther with "AFY" that you knew she was going downhill?? Are you mad?? Jimmy & Terry have been sampling music for who knows how long, now? Sampling has nothing to do with determining if an artist is going downhill.. And I am tired of hearing Janet is going downhill, anyway.. She will show her ass with this next album. If ppl would get over the Superbowl, then her last two albums would have sold a lot more. DJ and 20YO are great albums. They aren't like JJ albums before, but I don't feel they're bad at all. However, everyone has their own opinions..

But yeah, back to the sampling bit. That's rubbish. Janet has beats so much older than "All for You" that are sampled that were mega-hits. I'm gone.

its crazy that fans of these artists are so competitive, even more competitive then the artists themselves. as fans of R&B music we should support any and all of the few remaining great ones. Mariah, Janet, MJB etc...if and when they do retire all we'll be left with is nicole scherizenger and mya etc and then we'll miss all of em...support black music period!!!! stop hating.

It's all about the new school artist(s) & since I'm from Houston, I got to say-Beyonce got the female game on lock & she's not releasing the key. As for Mr. Dupri, he's the most talented producer out there. Not only does he do the tracks-he writes 'em too. People make a little money and get big-headed. Polow shit wouldn't sound as half as good if it wasn't for Keri.

I really do not think that Jermaine Dupree should produce Janet's next album. "20 yo" was not one of Janet's better albums. Even though it did have a couple of good songs on it, like "So Excited" and "Enjoy". The album was just to hip hop flavored. "Damita Joe" had r&b, dance and pop,more of what we usually expect from Janet. The only reason Janet's last 2 albums have not sold is because of the Super Bowl incident. That has really damaged her career. But i know with good songs and good promotion and marketing and radio behind her she can come back like Mariah. "Emancipation of Mimi was not one of Mariah's better albums,it just caught on with the public. So let's hope these new producers including Jam & Lewis can bring Janet back on top where she belongs.
