Fox News gets at Janet Jackson with a few points of interest she should pay attention if she ever wants to regain her thrown as the Queen of Pop.
We've all heard by now that the Jacksons are planning one big tour-- Janet and Michael included.
Well, Roger Friedman over at FOX looks at the last few years of Miss Jackson's career and offers some advice. Here are some highlights from his article.
-Jackson's last two albums, Damita Jo (Virgin) and 20 Y.O. (Virgin) didn't flop soley to bad publicity: they flopped because they were boring. Jackson's been harping about how sexy and alluring she is for the past decade, and the schtick is getting stale.
-Janet Jackson has worked almost exclusively with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for over 20 years. The trio has create some of the most intriguing dance music ever. Unfortunately, their collaboration has shown its age lately. Jam and Lewis are still very talented individuals, though aside from Jackson, their work hasn't been all that heralded and they haven't been able to produce the same magic and chemistry with other artists that they've managed with Jackson. She also should look to someone else to revitalize her sound. There was a moment of brilliance with Damita Jo with a pair of tracks created by Kanye West.
-Finally, the main thing Jackson should remember is that her strength lies in good pop music; so it's disheartening to hear her sing over canned, stale crunk beats. She should go back to her roots (as she claimed she has in the prehype for her last album) to dance-pop. As mentioned she should look to new producers, but should find some sympathetic pop maestros, instead of trying to fashion herself as an R&B singer, which she never really was.
A good suggestion would be to hook up with former Madonna-producer, William Orbit (I can imagine the results would be magical). She should also find the Pet Shop Boys' number.
-With American Life, detractors joyfully called Madonna's career over; others did the same with Mariah Carey after Glitter. Both singers have since returned to record sales comparable to their salad days; Jackson can still recover from the missteps, if she just takes care to overhaul her image and her sound. She should ditch the oversexed horny-babe look, because she shouldn't try so hard to compete with women who half her age (or even half her career's age). Ciara and Rhianna wouldn't exist without Jackson, and instead of trying to match them with carnality, she should instead trump them with class and intelligence.

I've speculated in private conversations that if Janet and Jermaine knew trouble was lurking at Virgin then they saved their best work for her post Virgin life. Janet is a legend and Jermaine is no fool. I say sit and wait....

I think this journalist hit the nail on the head for the most part according to the excerpt you've posted. My only disagreements would be that Janet's best work with Jimmy and Terry ended 4 albums earlier than Damita Jo. In my opinion "Janet" was her last genius creation.
I also disagree that Janet has been a purely pop artist. Just because the music was popular crossover music doesn't mean much of it wasn't R&B that was waay ahead of it's time. I think her and Jermaine should definately work together in the future without Jimmy and Terry as well as bringing in other more current producers.
I agree she can pull a few more tricks out of her hat and know that she will.

Virgin did not support this album at all. The reason I say this is because I never heard one single off this album played on the radio. I'm sure there are all kind of labels ready to snatch her up. The queen isn't done yet. Just wait and see.

I don't think the key to success is in any specific producer, but in Ms. Jackson herself. She needs to change her subjcet matter to real stuff. We've heard the sex stuff for four albums straight. I want to hear about the struggle, painful relationships, the highs and lows of everyday life or just plain old good clean happiness. (For goodness sake... even "Enjoy" couldn't be clear of sexual references!! Come on.)

I agree with this article. Janet doesn't need to prove to us or herself that she is SEXY. To me she is doing too much with the risque photos but on the other hand I admire her showing her abs at 40 years old and giving the other chicks a run for their money. The CD 20 Y.O. is classic Janet to me on some of the songs. Ciara can dance and Beyonce can sing but they are no Janet by far. What Janet lacks in singing makes up in dancing. Call On Me and So Excited would not been the first two singles off the new album. The dance for So Excited is wack and the If video is by far the BEST video of her career. There are other videos that I love by her but IF is the bomb. The media is still cruel to her and need to let the Super Bowl scandal go. I liked the 20 Y.O album. I think a lot of albums fail solely based on single choices. As much as I loved Call On Me it shouldn't of been the first single. I do however think Janet needs to start singing more clearly. Her vocals lately have been very mumblish and hard to understand.

obviously janetdoesn't care that showing her body is not going to sell records because she hasn't stopped so with that S BEING SAIDSHE MIGHT NOT GIVE A FUCK public thinks. and at this point she can make any kind of music she wants rather everyone likes it or hates it. what does she have to prove. she definitely has thestaying power, she's already rich she's won evry award imaginable countless times and she's snagging roles in movies that you would think tyler would be looking for something fresh but no boo boo he chose ms. jackson and not you. Is it asking too much that Ms Jackson show a little class and act her age? There's nothing wrong with being 40; I think it's very sexy to see a mature woman dressing well and a mature musical performer making music that shows some reflection, some depth; on the order of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On", or Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions" or "Songs In the Key of Life". She has the opportunity to do so much with her career, I wish she'd do what the journalist suggests, and kill the stripper schtick, it's tired and ridiculous.
I have to admit, this article made a LOT of sense to me. I love Janet; grew up with her artistry like so many of us did ; but I yearn for the days of The Velvet Rope, Janet., Rythmn Nation, Control...It's been said before, the last 3 albums would be great if by any other, lesser artist; but this is Janet Jackson, the innovator, the trend setter, the legend. It's as if she's lost her FIRE for the game! Maybe she feels like she has nothing else to prove? Maybe she doesn't care any longer. Maybe Jermaine is the only thing on her mind. But the fans DO care, TRUST. Each of the last 3 offerings are almost a variation on the same 'fun' & 'games' theme...In my humble opinion, Janet has always been at her very best when she is edgy, moody and dark. Lately, the sex appeal is on overdrive, especially on all the magazine covers we were bombarded with late last year (to be fair, @ 40 +, she can still pull it off). More advice, if you wanna hear it; when releasing a project, come out with a BIG song first, punching, kicking & screaming! Forget about easing into it....gotta grab our attention straight away and not let go; this is an A.D.D. culture after all. The music industry is a fight to the death; never get too comfortable. Janet, you MUST reinvent yourself each time you come out, otherwise, what's the point? Don't tarnish a long, prominant career with half-tries. Get aways from Virgin (now Capitol music group); start a new! You can do so much better girl; We are all rooting for you! Blow every other mother out of the water. Your a Jackson for Christ sake. Carry on the legacy!!! But no matter what, I will always love you, purchase all future music. Next time you come out, act like you have EVERYTHING to prove, like you did in the days of CONTROL...If not for yourself, then for the legions of fans who have stood by you all these many years.
