January 2007 Archives

As news came of Brandy's possible manslaughter charge and the $50 Million wrongful death lawsuit that's pending, B-Rocka takes the first steps in preparing for the war that is clearly at hand.

Ok, sohh E! is running a show called "Blvd Of Broken Dreams" featuring Latavia and LeToya, formerly of Destiny's Child.

Can I just say.... DAMN!

Can I also just say... DAMN, Rudy Huxtable looks good! Remember that ugly stage she went through towards the end of the "Cosby Show?"

Erykah Badu is on the cover of the February/March issue of Heart & Soul magazine.

NeYo Ain't To Be Counted Out

When we say the name NeYo, no longer does The Matrix come to mind. NeYo the singer/songwriter has been responsible for so many of the hits lately-- from Bey's "Irreplaceable," to Rihanna's "Unfaithful," to.... well you get it. Dude makes hits. He has already promised to make some for Whitney Houston.

But what about his own shit?

Marques Houston finally released his new video for his second single "Circles" and let's just say that it isn't a video indicative of a music industry veteran as his cd title implies.

Of course I know that anything that is worth accomplishing is going to have it's fair share of adversity. However I never expected the legends of Motown to be so vocal about their feelings on Dreamgirls. Smokey Robinson just spoke out about his disapproval of the way Motown founder and Diana Ross baby daddy Berry Gordy was portrayed.

Mariah Carey sits on the cover of Playboy's March issue don'd the Sex and Music Issue.

Can we get a round of applause for Vanessa Williams? No really... this chick is riding yet another career high. Almost like a cat with nine lives.

But will Vanessa record another cd?

Yes ladies and gentleman, R. Kelly will be issuing more of his now famous "Trapped in the Closet" series later this summer. Gotcha didn't I?

But wait, there's more....

Despite popular belief, Kelly Rowland's first single has NOT been confirmed as "Put It In (Work)". A lot of the popular blogs reported she'd be releasing a single on February 6th based on a link made available at the SONY Online Music Store.

Brandy Causes Fatal Car Crash

TMZ dropped a scoop about the fatal car accident caused by Brandy back in December 2006.

DAMN!

It's been a minute since a mainstream reggae/dancehall artists stood up for social responsibility. Meaning like a make a formal platform out of it. As Sean Paul gets busy on his next CD, he takes a cue from legendary reggae artist Bob Marley by using his popularity to draw attention to problems affecting youth in his homeland of Jamaica.

The internet is buzzing at the rumor that Fantasia's next single from her sophomore cd will be "When I See You." If that's true, SOHH Soulful says GOOD LOOK!

Black Hollywood is on the rise as Dreamgirls scores 8 nominations for Oscars which are due to be handed out February 25th!

Jennifer Hudson is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie! Like when Halle Berry won for Best Actress, Jennifer's nomination and hopefully her ultimate win is major for her and even more tremendous victory for the countless young actresses to follow in her footsteps.

The King of Pop is back in court in Los Angeles County!

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't moved by the return of Sunshine Anderson with her new cd Sunshine At Midnight. Not because there was a lack of talent or quality music, but rather because I guess I've heard it all before.

We're a little late on this one but....Faith Evans is expecting a child with husband/manager Todd Russaw.

Congrats to Faith!

There is nothing special about Kelis. She is just a lil star.

Muthafuggas love the Fugees. No matter what. We love Lauryn, Wycelf and even Pras.

It's been a few months since we've put R&B cuts on the chopping block. Up for consideration for your playlist is a new joint from Lloyd, Chamillioaire's rumored first single featuring Kelis. I also have a little something from Carl Thomas and a remix from Ciara. None of them are bonafide hits until you decide whether to Rush It.... or Flush It!

Y'all already know that Lloyd is a friend to the room.

(the first text I received this morning read... "I know the Knowles' are pissed!!!")

Jennifer Hudson brought it home last night snagging the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie in Dreamgirls.

It is really important for films like Dreamgirls to not only be made but that they are also acknowledged and celebrated.

But...

Toni, Toni, Toni.... What the hell is going on? Did y'all hear that Toni Braxton is suing her former personal manager Barry Hankerson for a bunch of money-- alleging he took food right off her table... and the little bit of clothes on her back.

A few weeks ago I told y'all that I hung out with Amerie at Jay Z's 40/40 Club. We talked about her mixtape, Because I Love It Vol. 1, her upcoming CD Because I Love It, her rumored beef with label mate Beyonce and more.

Amerie is most definitely a friend to the room, sohh she'll be checking in with us via email, voicemail and definitely more via video ( 'cause this one didn't quite capture her beauty and her presence the way I had hoped... that won't happen again).

Last night I stood in the far rear of small studio for Stephen Marley's acoustic performance of selected songs from his debut CD Mind Control. Damn that was a mouth full.

Paris Bennett, semi-finalist from last season's American Idol is dropping a solo album. Sound familiar?

Black Hollywood seems to be getting quite a bit of attention lately, especially the ensemble cast of "Dreamgirls." James Brown's passing has director Spike Lee,who's already been pegged to direct his biopic, in a frenzy by looking for the right star to portray the "Godfather of Soul." Some say Usher!

SOHH it seems our golden boy, John Legend left his ivy league influenced, choreographed mannerisms at home last week when performing in London at the Brixton Academy.

Remember D'Angelo?

Have you all heard about that new movie Freedom Writers starring Hilary Swank and R&B singer Mario?

Poor Beyonce...

Aiight y'all time to saddle up and do it all over again. It's 2007! I'm not gonna sit here and lie to myself about promises of self improvement. Or chant the usual BIG THINGS IN '07. What I will do is continue to act like I know it all and make some sweeping, biased predictions for 2007 which include Jennifer Hudson, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Joe, Jill Scott and Ciara.

Speaking of Ciara...
