I spent the better half of the evening yesterday hanging out with Akon and his camp. Akon, who is set to release Konvicted on November 14th, was prepping for an "AOL Sessions" performance. This would be the first time I've seen him perform live.
I first peeped Akon's game for real for real when he teamed with India.Arie for "I Am Not My Hair." Of course he had shit going on before then but I remember that song in particular because India originally recorded that track as a duet with Pink and when I heard Akon made the final version I was kinda bummed. But then the track came on in the barbershop and it clicked.
Since then, he's surfaced on "Private" a track by One Chance, Usher's lil group. Then someone (Dig) started making noise about "Smack That" featuring Eminem. Definitely an unlikely pairing but it definitely works, Billboard proves that. And if you haven't heard "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg then your ass clearly hasn't been listening to terestrial radio.
But yea... you know how a live show can make or break a performer's reputation (i.e. Cassie, Super Bowl 2004, Whitney Houston singing the "Star Spangled Banner")? Well yesterday proved that Akon has found his own lane and is driving in it as fast as he can, paying the competition nooch! His ability to differentiate when sales prove we love mediocrity in R&B restores my faith in the genre. Shit, I'll take it one step further. Dude has collabos with Em, One Chance, India, Snoop and a few others and it ain't by chance. Not everyone can blend their own style with such varied, eclectic artists and still maintain their definitive sound/style.

you'd be surprised... india actually went gold off that album... she doesn't have much promotion, but blame the label. the music is still there though... they just didn't give her the total package to push it... promotion, interviews, more than ONE single, hell even the release date wasn't promoted well. but she has a cult fanbase so her sales are inevitable
