Last night Matthew Knowles filled up the SONY Music Studios on 54th Street in Manhattan with a who's who of music industry tastemakers to showcase the new artist signed to Music World Entertainment.
Onlookers were treated to performances by groups like 2 Much, the one Matthew and Omarion have teamed together to promote, as well as Dionne Farris, Sunshine Anderson, NEXT (yes RL, Tweety and T-Lo), MoJo and a few others.
Yesterday we previewed the new 2 Much single, "Fire". So the song was fresh in my head as the group of four young dudes hit the stage. This group is B2K reincarnated. All in all, the track is bigger than the group and even B2K was better. But they've got room to grow into their own, so no rush.
The night got tricky when NEXT hit the stage. I guess all the rumors of RL signing with G-Unit were just that. But anyways, they performed one of their old hits. I can't recall the name. But I assume that RL didn't think the crowd got amped enough so he leans over to Tweety and pulls homeboy's shirt over his head. RINSE, WASH, REPEAT! RL, takes his homeboy's shirt off of him while dude was singing.
He wanted the crowd to show some love so he then took his shirt off and started wildin', talkin about how they not industry and how they came to perform. *CRICKETS* The room of about 150 guests sat there like Helen Keller... deaf, mutes. Everyone agast at the "antics."
Things got interesting when Grammy Award winner Dionne Farris took the stage with no drummer just a guitarist and bass player. Her show was "Hopeless" without the drummer or the respect from Matthew Knowles to introduce her. She is the most accomplished, most successful of all the new artists on the label. Dionne performed one song and bounced. It was reminiscent of Lauryn Hill at the Vibe Music Fest in Atlanta June 2004.
Finally you see what all the whoopla was about and it wasn't Solange who was absent because she is rumored to be in the studio with Bilal (yea, go figure). Sunshine Anderson hit the stage with dancers, choreography, hair, make up, fur.... the whole kit and caboodle. She sounded amazing, The voice still kicks. She looked sohh sohh. But I ain't mad.

Overall, it seemed that aside from Mojo, all the performers were kind of rusty. I mean Music World is the home of Destiny's Child. I expect at least a good performance. (Notice how all Music World's new artist are distributed via Universal and not SONYBMG)
A key moment during the downtime was seeing Smokey Fontaine profile the new copy of GIANT magazine with Ciara and DIddy on the covers. It was one of the advance copies so I don't have samples yet. I am sure they will surface on YBF, 'cause Natasha is just that dope but Ciara looks good enough to eat (this time right off the pages), She turned up the glam and there is a heavy Janet throwback... of course.

Dionne Farris? Wow, I havent heard a peep outta her since the Love Jones sound track. Use to love that song though. I would have thought she'd at least get an intro....
