Beauty, Brains and Ambition

No, no, no. Sit down. I am not about to get in a long winded rant on Beyonce. Quite the contrary. Today's headline is about of a trio of women. Each of whom are noted for either their beauty, their brains or their ambition.

Kelis:

She would be the beauty. After listening to Kelis Was Here, her most recent CD, I was sure Kelis would make some noise with music lovers. The album is bangin'. But every time I try to sell someone on it, I realized that I'd always have to pull out her trump card to keep their attention; her beauty. Vocally, Kelis ain't shattering glass no time soon. But her visual is quite sickening. Her new image took her sexy up about three or four notches and reinvention among black girls is a hard thing to pull off.

Soon I began to realize that Kelis' style and beauty is her gimmick. It is her selling point and at the end of the day you can't call up beauty on your playlist. Personality-wise she is cold fish; leaving a lot to be desired. Already rumors are flying that she'll be signing with Def Jam as soon as Jive finishes chewing her up and spitting her out. Hmmm, I wonder how she tastes.

Michelle Williams:

Michelle is Destiny's Child's snapple. Like Ashanti, she isn't #1 (Coke) and she isn't #2 (Pepsi). She's #3... with an appeal and taste all of her own. Michelle is who I would discern is the smartest in the group. The story goes that she was pawned off on Destiny's Child by Monica whom she used to sing background for. Her real name supposedly isn't Michelle but I remember in an interview a few years back she told a reporter that it didn't matter that she had to change her name, and it didn't matter that she wasn't the lead. All that mattered to her was she got to travel the world and sing... getting paid was just a bonus. Smart girl, although I am sure that footage has been destroyed.

Despite what is reported on other websites, the song -- "Love Thang" -- that is floating around the internet is NOT a new song by Michelle. Although she is reportedly recording, Michelle is building her own audience through speaking engagements, professional team sports ownership and staying as far away from (DING!) as possible. Kelly, are you paying attention?

Ciara:

Although Ciara has proven to be both smart and beautiful, it's her ambition that keeps her afloat the most. Her voice, airy and light at best. However, her drive to succeed in an already overcrowded field helped her find an open lane. A lane that is part Janet Jackson and part Aaliyah. Janet herself even admits that Ciara's most recent video "Get Up" from the Step Up soundtrack reminds her of herself.

Ciara, with the help of peeps like Jazze Pha, Missy Elliott and Bangladesh made a dollar out of fifteen cents. There is no way you first heard "Goodies" and thought she would have one of the most-anticipated sophomore CDs. Her upcoming album is titled Evolution. I for one am very interested in seeing if indeed she experiences an evolution. "Get Up" is very "Goodies" but it's for a soundtrack and I am sure the movie house paid for a familiar Ciara. But trust, we are watching... and waiting.

The new joint of the day "Beautiful Transformation" is by Brooke Hogan featuring Stacks and of course it's produced by Scott Storch.

In my opinion, Kelis should be a model.

Michelle should keep doing what she is doing.

And I really like Ciara, so we'll see.

Kelis' CD is bangin'? Aside from "Living Proof" I would say, not so much.

Good morning.

Good morning!

Soulman-thank you for showing Ciara love. People always have something negative to say about her but they can never say she don't work hard and like you said she is ambitious.

Is it just me or does it seem like Kelis doesn't even care to be a singer? She jus doesn't seem passionate about it. IDK it's prolly jus me.

Ciara gonna do the damn thing. She has found a way to be competitive but with a style of her own.

Once you have carved your own lane, nothing left to do but let peeps follow you.

Hey SOHH.

I can see your point on KELIS' beauty being the one defining thing about her (aside from the extra crispy fried voice). Actually, let me go ahead and say that NOW her beauty is what people know and love her for. BEFORE it was the hair and screaming. It seems to me that I am like on of the only people on this blog that still am not turned on by her album. And refuse to be sold by it. Simply because I don't think that she has talent. I love her to death- don't get me wrong. But, if I wanted to spend money on someone for their beauty, I'd turn to my mother.

Ciara... I think that she relies mostly on her dancing ability. I mean, the only video of hers (song) that did not get rotation, was the one that she wasn't dancing in. It was some slow jam. I don't know. As a fan, I prefer to hear her less and see her dance more.

No comment on MICHELLE. Lol. Actually, I have a comment, but I won't say it.

What about artists like CLAUDETTE ORTIZ that can sing and are beautiful, but still don't get shine? Yesterday, I was wondering where she is going to fit in the whole scheme of things when her album drops...

Come on Slimster.... you know you be bumpin' "Triliogy", "Handful", "Ah Shit", "Circus", "Weekend", "Fuck Them Bitches".... no?

The dude Ryan from City High is also about to drop something.

Claudette was hot in that song with Wyclef... what was it called? "Two Wrongs Don't Make It Right" or something like that.

No comment on MICHELLE. Lol. Actually, I have a comment, but I won't say it.

Come on... fire them bullets. IT'S ROCKY BALBOA!

:SOHH
Her voice is bananas. Seriously, she could sing BEY straight into the bayou. With crocodiles. And by far she is more beautiful. I think that she killed that song with Clef. Now all she needs to do is find that damn label. You know? Sheeeet. That is my girl. She has a song on her MySpace called "Message to You" that I have been bumping so hard. It's a slow jam, but it is so fucking fierce...

Thats what im saying but you seem to be the only person that agree with me. I mean i'm not gonna lie I doubted her at first cause she couldn't sing but she won me over quick with her performances and dancing. And why people always make it known she can't blow like Mariah? Janet Jackson can't sing for her life.

:SOHH
And RYAN is her hubby I think. He's rather corny to be with such a vixen, but I guess she likes it. Lol. But, I haven't checked out anything from him though. Anyhow... I'm saving my bullets for later. Just in case I get a wise guy. Then it'll be shoot em up bang bang.

lol, i wanna know what you were gonna say about Michelle (real name Tenitra Michelle Williams)...

i actually like her voice on some songs, and sometimes she kills it live. anyone heard her remake of "Lets Stay Together"?

:GP
Lol. LMAO. I can't. I just can't. I am so working hard on being nicer. (People think I am mean.) But, I liked the remake she had. It was for the GAP right? She sings wonderfully. I wonder what became of her sisters' group.

Wassup to the Sohhoulfuls?
I've gotten on the Kelis bandwagon the old fashioned way: Constantly playing in the backround as I did another task.
"Like You", "Goodbyes", "Lil Star", "Blindfold Me" and "Weekends" are the ones I count as my favorites. I look at Ciaa as one of my daughters' artist and I don't know much about Michelle except she made a gospel album. I really didn't look at Kelis as sexy until recently, I just always thought she was on some "other" shit. But she got me with this album, not saying I'm a dedicated fan but she'll have my ear on future projects.

Yeah it was for the GAP... and I remember her sister and them singing on MTV... had to search for it on YouTube right quick:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8vxIx2qHpE

Its so funny how Beyonce and Kelly is just watching in shock

:GP
"Oh shit!" That was the look on their faces. Those girls outsang DC completely. I was laughing when they started singing. Talent that will never get shine. I tell you. THAT is why I don't buy albums from the likes of KELIS, CASSIE and DEM. Lol. I would much rather support true artists. My last bad purchase was TERROR MARI, and it was bad enough to make me swear off gimmicks.

I feel you on that... I was about two seconds away from buying Rihanna's first album, but i'll never even come close to making a similar mistake again

:GP
I actually got her album for free. It was okay, but not something that I would have spent money on. RIHANNA is as much a gimmick as the rest. I was listening to a couple of old school CDs I made not too long ago. I came across ALLURE, CHANGING FACES, BROWNSTONE, and the original 702... Then I got mad. I miss the 90s for real. Everything has changed so much. What happened?

Great post Mr. Soulful. I agree with you on each one. You know Michelle and her brother started there own production company for her music now. She is smart as hell. And she got her brother writing and production credit on all Destiny Child albums she was on. She played her role and she deserves everything she get. I love Kelis but I was real disappointed with her album. And I love Ciara. She deserves her spot better than any Rihanna or Tierra Mari or anyone of these youngings.

What up Soulful peeps?

I think that Kelis's album bangs and I can really stand her screaming b/c vocally I know that she is not that good a singer.

Michelle is very DIVA like in her own way. I have never liked her voice but I like the fact that she is versatile. I like that she is not just a bobble head doll. I mean this grl is smart as hell and she is making her own lane. She knows that the Pop Diva ain't made for her and she is running on a track that is her own.

Ciara is about the most ambitious and she is relateble to people. I remember when Aaliyah came out and was so dam glad that there was a beautiful chick in some baggy's and tims. I mean that is what I feel about Ciara. She got a body for days but her performance is what I like to see. Her singing is not great but that is cool b/c she bangs on the joint.

After listening to Janet on Take Care - I was remembering the old Velvet Rope Janet - and that to me is one of her best albums b/c she was not holding back anything. I think the 20YO is going to be a mix of the old J and the new J - and I am liking it more and more. She is the female equivalent of Prince when comes to sexual and sensual tracks.

Soulman:
Any info on that Diddy/Keyshia Cole.

I have a cousin that lives in Buckhead and she was telling me that she was tryin get so me info on it but she said Diddy is top secret with his shit. He don't want nobody hearing his shit til he puts it out there. No tracklisting for Press Play yet?

You know something that's kind of funny. Look at CIARA's outfits, style etc.
Doesn't she remind you more of MICHAEL JACKSON than JANET JACKSON?

No tracklisting for Press Play yet?

Khloe': Thanks so much.
I have been on the hunt for this shit like it is the next coming of the Messiah...lol

But I am anxious to here the joint with him and Keyshia Cole.

Ok Lunch time -

I will catch yall later!!!

TAH:
We sure were.LOL
And she has bought a % in some basketball team (women's I think). She is the shit. Now that I am thinking about it - You Tyra Banks is smart as hell too; whatever happened to her wanting to sing - I can't even remember her being able to sing. I remember that joint from her show and she sounded kinda Amerie-ish.

@ KSH...you're very welcome. I'll have to leave the rest to Soulman!!!

@KSH YEA SHE DID SOUND AMERIE-ISH! I DIDNT LIKE TYRA'S LIKE THAT BUT I LIKE AMERIE!

=TAH=

OFF 2 LUNCH!

SOHH SOULMAN WHAT ABOUT ALICIA KEYS?

I THINK SHE'S VERY BEAUTIFUL, SHE HAS AMBITION AND SHE DEFINETLY HAS BRAINS (UNLIKE, DING!!)

Boy, I am such a party pooper I guess. I don't know what the relevence of this topic is, but I'm gonna chime in anyway since I missed all the action yesterday.

Kelis is cute as a button, but I wouldn't call her beautiful. I have a tough time even seeing her as an adult. Her look is very child-like.

Michelle is brainy for jumping on the DC bandwagon, but who really cares about her? She has no personality and I'd be shocked if she ever came out with a hit album.

I love Ciara, but find it interesting that no one has mentioned the obvious. She has slid right into Aaliyah's sexy tomboy spot. Weak vocals and all. They even dance alike.

make me swear off gimmicks.

Finally somebody speaks the truth. I feel like only singers should be singing and makin albums. If you are a dancer with an okay voice, sing backup or be somebody's dancer. Stay off my radio. The 90s did put out some of the hottest groups...musically, but the 90s also put out some of the ugliest groups EVER! That is what has changed. Now it is all about looks and age.

Nicky...Shut the fuck up...

Youve showed your intelligence by your dumb as comments..

Get off the computer and take your juvenile ass to school

Sorry mama
but at least Aaliyah could actually sing
have you Ciara live
Shes horrible!
Ciara a image and a great marketing tool for the younger generation
she fills alot of voids
Shes not my type at all personally I don't find her attractive but shes a teenager so it doesn't matter. But she's built like a model, she can dance
her music is pop and very catchy. Shes a fresh face and from the south. Her image is on point she fills a void. But she can't sing, worse they've had her on stage doing live duets at award shows and she was the worst.
I don't think she's gonna last
if anything happened between her an Jazzy Pha she's a wrap

Wow. No somebody didn't bring up Tyra Banks' music career. LMAO! And she was talkin about how that was her dream and goall in life and blah blah blah and I don't even think she made a full album. That's too bad.

LOL @ Soulman constantly trying to shove Kelis down people's throat. You can't force anybody to be a fan.

Kelis looks ok, but she is far from beautiful. She should reframe from smiling because that's not a good look. I'm sick of people saying she is unique. There is nothing unquie on that album. I won't comment on her vocally because it's too obvious....and its already been said that she is nothing more than a gimmick so...

Ciara has made a name for herself. She went double platinum, appeared on other hits songs by others artist, and has made her mark. Ciara style of dancing is different from Aaliyah. Musically, they are different as well.

Michelle - I don't know what to say. She lucked up with Destiny's Child and should be happy for any success she receives.

My question is...if Aaliyah was still here, what would Ciara be doing? I had the chance to hear them both perform live and there is no way to compare. Aaliyah could actually sing. Ciara...well, you know the rest. Just having a pretty face is all you need in the industry now. BEING ABLE TO SING IS NOT REQUIRED.

@Aston

YOUR COMMENTS ARE SOUNDING JUVENILE!!!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE A JAYONCE ASS KISSER!
THIS IS A BLOG AND I DO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN GET OFF THE BLOG!
ALICIA KEYS IS THE BOMB!!! LIKE I SAID BEFORE!!

What up yall?

I just came out of an hour and 15-minute meeting so I REFUSE to read these posts.... but thank you Jesus for this not being a Ding/Dang day!

I never was that big on Kelis before this CD. She had a few songs - well 1 or 2 - that I thought were ... interesting... but she never made me really give a damn. She really doesnt sing that well, but she's wayyyy atypical, has a lane all her own, and thats what I really dig about her.

Michelle.... *yawning*.... Sorry, never been able to talk about her without the ambien effect. Moving on...

Ciara is cool. I went from liking her to not liking her and back to liking her after the reinvention. Initially that ambition was more like octane - it was straight sickening, but I guess those BET "come get in my business" specials will do that to you. I've always wanted to punch her stylists in the face too, cause she use to look like a weavy ass robin hood, but now she's looking WORLDS better. And she doesnt totally suck on the music tip either, she just doesnt have a real strong voice and a lot of the songs seem to be cut from the same mold, but Im hoping she strays from that a little this time around. Honestly though, I dont see Ciara staying in this lane though. I see her branching off on some Christina Milian shit and in a couple years she'll be more known for movies and stuff like that. Guess we'll see.

Yeah, Ciara has her own sound. I don't think her music sounds like anyone else, which I like.

I will agree that she can't sing. Did anyone catch her at the Sly Stone tribute during the grammies? That was awful.

I once read an interview with her though that said she knows that she has a thin voice and wants to use her time and success in the spotlight to get other business ventures, etc started. B/c she doesn't think she'll sing forever.

As far as Ciara goes, I'm not gonna really judge her until her next album. Too many times have artists come out with hit first albums, got a little more control the second time around, and then bombed. Then we've seen the so-so first record, but the second one is a hit b/c they run things. And I thought Ciara did her thing on "And I". It got a little whiny towards the end and I have to cut it off, but it was a cool ballad.

My ish wasn't refreshing. Anyhow. BC, the 90s sure as hell had some ugly ass groups. OMG. Oh, hold on BRB to list.

OMG. Oh, hold on BRB to list.

This oughtta be some funny shit

Hi Soulman. I read your blog often, and I must say I really enjoy it (even though you give my girl Bey a hard time). You all really keep me entertained during the long work day. I just wanted to chime in today and make a small correction. Michelle didn't change her name. Michelle is actually her middle name. That's all!

Khloe'--thanks for the track listing for this album...now, who's got the link to download???
