Two of the most anticipated songs impacting radio within the last week were Beyonce's "Deja Vu" featuring Jay-Z and Janet's "Call On Me" featuring Nelly. Two very different songs, with two very different styles. SOHH let's go ahead and get this out the way and see what all the hoopla is about.
Over the weekend I heard "Call On Me" for the first time since I visited Jermaine Dupri in the studio for our listening session. When homeboy first played the song for me, I liked it right away. However, I figured having it on repeat most of the weekend would either sicken me of it or make it a staple on my playlist. Janet did it. "Call On Me" is good. It's really good. Nelly gets his shine on. The duet is not strained or forced and it's got just enough bounce to it. Nelly isn't intrusive on the track. His presence and his delivery is on par for Janet's soft vocals. I definitely sense that this song has the legs to run right up the charts.
The downside for me is rather minor; J.D. sampled this same track for a hot Mariah Careyremix for "Always Be My Baby." Yes, songs get sampled and resampled all the time, but when the same person does it more than once for such highly visible singers it starts to sound less like a producer's signature and a little bit like cannibalism. The original was produced for the SOS Band by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. SOHH it lost a couple cool points for not being as original as this super producing dream team could have created. But it's still fiyah. Shit, I'd request it.
Now y'all know SOHH Soulful stay up Beyonce's ass. We love her. "Deja Vu" is impressive but not well thought out. Bey is in her creative prime... just about the same age Janet was when she created the Janet album. On "Deja Vu," I love how she is trying new things with her voice. That shows growth. She kept the yoodling to a minimum and finessed and stylized a little more. Jay-Z however seems dated, predictable and usual. It's always Brooklyn, drugs and Birkin bags. Enough already. But tell me this, why is it when they create a song together she sing's of being so "crazy in love" with her man and he raps about himself? On this track he purposely doesn't call her his boo. It's going to be interesting to see the video and performance.
Overall, both of them are giving us something both bangin' to listen to. I mean we could be just sitting around trying to figure out Danity Kane -- which is phonetically similar to Destiny's Child... What is Diddy up to?

That is by far Jay's weakest verse to date. And the song is gotbage. Beyonce sounds good, but the subject matter are boring and predictable. Janet's is okay because I haven't heard her in a while. U heard Ciars' new song featuring Chamillamonkey...that's got bage as well.
THAT BEYONCE AND JAY-Z JOINT IS CRAPPY DEFINITELY 2 OF HOVA'S WORST VERSES THAT SECOND ONE WAS HIS WORST OF ALL TIME HE OWES 50 PUBLISHING RIGHTS FOR THAT BULLSHIT AND JANET AND NELLY SOUND LIKE A JA-RULE AND ASHANTI SONG CIRCA 2001. IT'S MUCH BETTER THAN DEJA VU BUT ANYWAY FUCK R&B.
I like Janet's new song. Its cute.
"Call on Me" gets my vote... Beyonce's song gives me a headache... actin like someone is chasing her with an ax. I need a dance track from Janet soon tho
I think this is a very strategic move by Janet... all these people tryin to compete will fast dance songs and she drop a slow jam on yall ass... I like it
HE OWES 50 PUBLISHING RIGHTS?
50 stole Jay's flow from from a Jay verse on "We got em goin", a song on "the best of both world's unfinished business" album. It's the same style that 50 uses on the 2nd verse of "Just a lil bit". Thats why Jay said "you gonna need help tryin to study my bounce/flow".
I'm not a big fan of Jay's verses on deja vu but it doesn't hinder the song in anyway. And it's still better than 95% of the rap on the radio now. I just hope he lays a different one before the video shoot and the album release.
I find it interesting how when Janet dropped "I Want You" last time around, she got flack for not dropping a dance track.
I wanted a dance track this time. Sorry folks, but "Call on Me" is the cure for insomnia. This sounds like another Bow-Wow/Ciara joint or something. And this isn't so much a Janet song as it is a JD song, which bugs the hell out of me.
It's like when Mobb Deep hooked up with G-Unit. The swagger has changed.
Janet can do better than this.
Or maybe she can't....
JD using the same sample again is hella lame.
Of ALL the THOUSANDS of songs that have been recorded over the decades, there is really no reason for one producer to repeat the same sample.
The song....ehhh.
But I'm not really feeling that Beyonce joint either.
i think Deja Vu is a hott track...i don't feel jay's verses are as weak as everyone says, i feel they were good. i love how beyonce really tried something different on dis track, and although i feel she fell kinda flat lyrically towards the end, the song is definately strong and i see it debuting pretty high on the charts dis week.
as for janet's song, its hott, but its not a first single. its very breathy and looks like its gonna get old quick....i wanted her to come out stronger, but she disapointed me. the song could possibly do good...but i personally don't like it.
As for Beyonce, it's not like this is the first time she is singing like this, it's just that she has a track to better harness and show off the versatility. Im glad that she utilizes her commercial appeal and still delivers music that is both vocally challenging and vividly written.
This should make the Rhiannas, Cassies, and Ciaras of the world just hang themselves.
And that Janet song with Nelly is trash.
Ok, SOHH..... ya ready?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
yeah i like "call on me" too, i think her and nelly blended pretty well together, im also looking forward to her next single 'so excited' which is a dance tune, beyonce's song is ok it will have to ware on me though, im not a jay z fan at all so they could have left him off the track,
I thought this was a hip hop site????
Janet - 20th yr anniversary of Control = BIG DEAL
This first single feat Nelly = No where near a big deal
I think its a horrible first single regardless but it definitley doesn't meet the standards of a 20th anniversary Extravaganza.
Very disappointed. But at least it gives her an excuse to tour. I will be in the house for that.
that "Deja Vu" jawn is a club banger. It may be mindless drivel to some but to me it's a hot summer banger. It definitely gets the ladies on the floor and after all, that's what it's about. I'm feelin' how Beyonce is letin' her voice escalate until the end of the song she sounds really passionate. you could tell she "believes" in this song. Even Jay's "mailed in' verses are better that 95% of the stuff that's out. That being said, somebody PLEASE cop that "Fishscale" jawn by Ghostface!!! Track number 15 produced by MF DOOM is BANANAS!!
I don't know....The janet song is aight, but the B' song is HOT!!! People gon' hate on Lady B', but I doubt that's gon' do shit to her soundscan.
I liked hearin' the Jay verse. LOVE to ear from him when I can....
I really think B' song is gon' do better, for two reasons: Audience and Video. B' and Jay gon bring a CRAZY hot video we all know! And B' got a wider audience listenin' to her music.
I'ma always be a BEYONCE fan, holdin' down tha TX!
Hata's on the other hand are gon' be real mad this summer.....stroke time!
Y'all are right. I am going to need a dance track from Janet real soon. I still like Janet's song more than B's song.
I love Janet, and I know I will definitely be getting her new album. "Call on Me" is ok, it isn't bad. I was just hoping for more of a banger for her lead single. I agree with you SOHH Soulman, this one may definitely run straight up the charts. Everything Nelly is on turns to platinum. The vocals are kind of weak on this song though. I'm sure Janet won't let us down though.
As for Beyonce's "Deja Vu", last week I commented saying it was hot, but now I'm over it. I sounds like it should have belonged on her last album. It's a decent song, but nothing really new from Beyonce. However, I do love Beyonce more on her uptempo tracks like this. The only slower song I really love by her is "Me, Myself, & I", that was my song. I'm just ready to see Beyonce step it up, and make a transition forward.
As for Jay-Z, he's still the SH!T, although I wasn't feeling his second verse on this song. I hope his new album is hot.
Jay's time is over
Please Hova,
You no more the closer.
If hov still wants to be respected, he should take a break for good. His reply to Cam in the hustlin remix was so poor, it made cam's first diss a good one.. then cam came in with that young joc remix.
We love you jay... stay away from rap for a while..
Weezy has taken over for good!!!!
LMAO @ Corey, that is so damn true. I never though of it like that, but now I see it. "Chasing her ass with an axe"... That's classic.
I think "Call on Me" will perform better than "Deja Vu" on the charts.
I know everyone wanted janet to come out with a big dance number but i think Call on me realy brings balance to the industry. It took 3 listens and i was hooked couldnt stop playing the song obviously Janet is never gonna be the same as B and MC vocally but obviously she appeals to people in diff ways for this track i think its just a sweet feel good song with a nice beat to ride with I LOVE IT!
smooth janet smooth..i like it
Damn, I was really expecting Janet to clap back with some fiyah! that shit is whack... way to airy and am i the only person who never wants to hear from Nelly again? all his music annoys me.
And Deja Vu is slowly growing on me. its the kind of throw-away summer track. it was playing at a cook-out yesterday and it was a perfect fit.
LOL.
Ok.... So... I like the Janet/Nelly joint. I do. Its real laid back, mellow, kinda like the Nelly/Kelly dilemma joint... BUT, John's right, it's not a first single. Its definitely gonna get people boppin to it, but if the objective is to pull people onto Planet Janet and get them all excited about the album, it wasnt enough. This is not "Let me go joing MDJ in line this time" (LOL) this is some "Limewire...Limewire... hmmm.... Janet Jackson... (scroll down)...Call On Me.... (click) and.... download! Yeah, that joint is hot." LOL
As for the sample, Im not mad at JD cause he did it in a way that you can still see this track separate and aside from the MC remix, but just on prinicple, its a disappointment knowing thats what he did. And I mean damn, Janet's your boo... you gon give her sloppy seconds from somebody who you probably already in the doghouse over? You gon send MC thru the billboard roof and then give Damito Jo the leftovers? LOL.... JD just cruisin for a bruisin.
Who wanna bet that if Janet's shit dont go platinum, she and JD will be the next couple in the tabloids in a high-profile break up?
I think the Janet song is good; but it isn't stand out. She doesn't do anything remarkable on it. And I hate the singing Nelly.
I do love "Deja Vu". I just love the beat and the instrumentation. It is a great dance track. I like Jay-z verse too; I think it is clever, but he does sound tired. As for him rapping about Beyonce and how much he lover her, blah, blah, does anyone really want to hear that from Jay? It's a radio song and neither him nor Beyonce ever get too serious on radio songs.
If you do want to hear how he feels about her you can check out the song he wrote on Beyonce last album called, "That's how you like it."
I agree that Beyonce is in a stage of her career where she is experimenting with different things and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I love the song Déjà Vu I think I have played it about 20 dam times since I first heard it. Jay’s first verse was decent but the second verse was just iighte he could have done better though but the song is still fire in my opinion. I will defiantly be picking up bey’s album because I have heard 3 songs that I like that’s “woman like meâ€, “Déjà vu†and “Ring the Alarm†I think this album is going to be pretty good.
As for Janet’s single the only ballad that I have actually enjoyed from Janet was “Again†I absolutely hate this song and I don’t feel like it was Janet’s best. She is 40’s year’s old and making childish duets like this? Don’t get me wrong I love Janet Jackson I really do but I think with her and Jermaine dupri they could have done much better then crap. My rule about buying albums is that I have to hear at least 3 songs that I like. So until Janet brings out 2 more singles worth listening to then im not buying the album.
I think both songs are great.
However I can't listen to Beyonce song more than once without cringing. Her verbato is all over the place, and the song is just well not doing it for me. Its trying to be Crazy In Love, but its not even Crazy In Love's second cousin. All the dramatics at the end are just hmmmm. Second single please.
Call on Me, is a summer jam. Not Janet at her best either. However its easier on ears and it just chill. Not to over the top, its not trying to be something its not suppose to be. I didn't think Janet and Nelly would fit together on song, but JD surprised me. I think Janet's vocals could be a lil louder. I don't want her to sang louder, but I think in mixing the song, they should have put her vocals on top of the beat, they seem to blend in. Nonetheless I have to give this one to Janet.
However both will be playing on my iPod. May Janet and Beyonce rule the airwaves this summer!!!
Janet thats what I like, a track I can ride to. But then again I still would have love to see how she would have done on a dance track. Overall, all this hype over two mediocre tracks.
"On this track he purposely doesn't call her his boo. It's going to be interesting to see the video and performance."
It is hard to believe that Jay-z is 12 years older than Beyonce b/c she seems like the more mature one. Whatever works for them though.
the version you have is terrible quality... here's a better one:
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=E97EFE41143875DB
dont worry the good shit will come closer to the release of the album.. the CD doesnt even dropp until Sept.
deja vu is horrible
It needs to be redone. The beat is wack and is not suitable for the way beyonce sings. She screams throughout the whole song and the hook is way out of place.Maybe Teairra Mari should have been given this song because she would have done a much better job!
The second JAY-Z verse sounds like he was just practising and that clever dumb producer thought that it was hot!
I think the Beyonce/Jay Z collabo is garbage, I think people will soon grow tired of Beyonce because she's everywhere these days, movies, videos, magazines etc. She needs to go away for a while. Now Janet's new single with Nelly is the shit. This song is definitely a hit, eventhough I like to see Janet doing more upbeat stuff that you can dance to I can deal with this mellow, laid back Summer track for now. She'll blow our minds with her 2nd single!!!! Way to go Janet!!!
I like them both I will have to hear them more to formulate a better opinion. I will say however it bugs me just a lil bit that Janet's beat is a recycled beat from way back! but from what I hear its aight.
B and Jay its aight too B's way of singin on this track is somthing I think that has to grow on you
I know folks are gonna get upset when I say this, but................
Christina 'have no haira' Aguilera is probably gonna fuck both Janet and Beyonce up this time around.
If ya'll didn't see her live on MTV, she shut it down. And I hate on Christina every chance I get. She did the damn thang.
Ok so..... I like the Janet/Nelly song. I do. But John's right, its not a first single. If the objective was to snatch people onto Planet Janet and get them excited about her upcoming album, it missed the mark. This is something you release as like a second single after some hardcore, banging ass club single or something - especially in the heart of the summer. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. Ah well.... at least the song doesnt suck, LOL. She's got a shot. Bey's shit sucks ass to me so the scoreboard should say Janet 1, Bey 0 but since in my opinion, Janet had more ground to cover, JD betta stop playin. Bey aint gon fuck up too many times. He should consider this one a freebie.
As for the track... JD is trippin LOL. He probably already in the doghouse for sending MC thru the billboard roof, now he done went and thrown her on a track he gave MC damn near 10 years ago? LOL, thats how you treat your Boo, JD? LOL S.O.S. band huh? I got another old school joint for him cause, if this album dont go platinum, I bet he be "livin the single, single, single, single, single, single...Life," LOL
SOHH the website's trippin, either that or I have an internet demon fuckin wit me right now....LOL. My first post str8 vanished.... then after I redid it, it came back, WTF? LOL
But anyway, I forgot to comment about Jay. Personally he saved the song for me. The content of the verses was a little suspect, but something about the tone of his voice over a decent track just makes you bounce. I like the track, like the cameo, but shit got all fucked up when Bey started singing.
And dont start the bullshit, Stanonce's, I like Bey's voice, I think she usually does her thing but when homey said something about her gettin "chased with an axe" (LMAOOOOO) I saw that shit VIVIDLY. LOL
Yo Dig:
That shit was happening on Friday too.
Refresh wasn't working.
I like the Janet song. Thank goodness. I have not liked any of Janet's music for about the last 2 CDs. I was hoping JD could bring her up to date, because as bad as Jimmy and Terry are, there were not giving Janet the best material. I have not heard Beyonce, but I am sure it will do just fine. I am shocked that people are complaining about JZs verse. He's been rapping about the same stuff for years now.
Call On Me is boring as hell. I don't mind a midtempo first track but it doesn't even have a real groove like That's the Way Love Goes or Island Life from DJ. It's easily forgettable.
Deja Vu--the bass line is sick. Very catchy chorus. A little too much yelling but I'm betting with a video or a remixed version that will soon be forgotten.
WillyJ: Good, at least I know Im not crazy, LOL. Oh and I peeped the C. Aguilera joint too and I say youre right on the money with that.
I like Janet's song but I don't like Beyonce's song. It gives me a headache. Some of her songs are annoying like Check On It and Crazy In Love.
Janets first single is great. Some might say its too slow, but when she came with the Janet album her first single was "Thats The Way Love Goes" and that was a huge hit. Dont underestimate my girl. She didint get this far by luck. She has more talen in her pinky finger then all these other lady singers. Oh and Janet can sing and hit the high notes. How bout yall actually go back and listen to the "Control" album. I dont need her screamin in my eay on 13 tracks......Beyonce!
Whe people got to mention Janet age.age aint nothin but a damn numba.and I love both Janet And Beyonce. But Bee do too much yelling.I love how janet came back and swith it up on us.But we all know the next single is gonna be a upbeat.they said the album 99.9% urban/hiphop.and the majority of the album is upbeat-but has a couple of midtempos. srry yall i think janet got dis.and call on me is for couples for summer of 2006.r just people period.thanks jj.
You are in love with Tommy,
Because his last name is Hilfiger,
But behind closed doors, Tommy,
Is calling you a nigger.
But you could care less,
Because you have been taught to dress to impress,
If I ask you about your true history,
You would have to look on the back of your jeans and Guess.
You come up in the club wearing Versace,
Clothes made by a homosexual male,
So even when you say you are straight,
It is very hard to tell,
And for footwear, you wear Timberlands.
Even under the sun,
That same tree that's the symbol for them,
Could have been the same one your ancestors were hung from.
I cannot forget Nautica,
When was the last memory you have of ships,
Coming to North America in shackles,
Being beaten over the back with whips.
And to my beautiful black queens,
Whose creative womb has become barren,
I am confused because your face says Nefertiti,
But your sweater reads Donna Karen.
When was the last time you saw Liz Claiborne,
Conversing with black women,
But as soon as her name is printed on a purse,
To Macy's you quickly go, running.
Ralph Lauren doesn't even look at black men,
Unless they are driving him around town,
But as soon as that slave master appears on the back of a horse,
You put whatever you have picked up down.
My people reclaim your status in this world and in your life,
F.U.B.U. in case you didn't know, stands for (For Us By Us),
Buying black will someday suf fice,
Do you know who owns Timberland fashion?
Well, Timberland is owned by the president of the KKK,
Surprised? Don't be.
Read more books black people,
Always hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
You may not get what you pay for,
But you'll surely pay for what you get.

B song is tight for the club but janet song is hott cant wait to hear the cd
I love Janet's Call on Me, it's me and my girls song now. But, I have to have a dance single from J. soon.
Beyonce song has a hot beat that will get me jumpin in the club but, thats it, lyrics are lame along with her tired boyfriend who really needs to stay retired. Listening to B.s' DeJa Vu anywhere other than a club is nauseating.
"Janets first single is great. Some might say its too slow, but when she came with the Janet album her first single was "Thats The Way Love Goes" and that was a huge hit. Dont underestimate my girl. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
LOL...
How many albums ago was that? LOL
Yo, hahaha.... I wasnt even gonna say it but I knew somebody was gonna start that "Janet can sing" bullshit. On the low, Cuz, Nelly sounded better than she did on her own shit. LOL. How you release something as your lead single that you sound like you making a guest appearance on? LMAO!
This is a poem allegedly written by the well-known African American poet Maya Angelou who is remembered as having participated in the 1993 Presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton. The poem makes reference to clothing designers and manufacturers including Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Nautica, Liz Claiborn, Ralph Lauren, Timberland company and packages them all under an umbrella of either racism or at least companies whose products are to be avoided by African Americans. It encourages "buying black." It also claims that Timberland is owned by the "president" of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Truth:
We have consulted with the agency that represents Maya Angelou and they have confirmed that this was not written by her.
call on me definitley a a jam for the summer....beyounce get out the drivers seat, janet's got the keys!
