While you were wondering why are two of the three most popular hosts on BET (Black Entertainment Television) aren't actually black and why none of the hosts on Telemundo are, we here at SOHH Soulful have been scrolling through a stolen iPod to compile our Top 5 Songs of the Moment!
SOHH Soulful Top 5 Songs of the Moment:
5. India.Arie featuring Akon - "I Am Not My Hair"
This song has a tight beat and actually blends in well with other songs on a playlist. Akon bosses up a lil somethin' but India keeps his almost annoying voice in line with her smoothed out vocals.
4. Chingy featuring Tyrese - "Pulling Me Back"
At first, I thought this was Sisqo crooning but I quickly realized it was Tyrese. I hope the positive feedback on this track makes Tyrese realize there is no need to try to be a rapper.

3. Ne-Yo - "Sexy Love"
Ne-Yo is like four singles deep. "Sexy Love " bangs just as much as "Stay", "So Sick" and "When You're Mad". I am sure everyone and their mama has this CD by now... no sample needed.
2. Shareefa featuring Ludacris - "Need A Boss"
We love our hood chicks up in here. Shareefa has those strong, raw vocals that are hard to come by. She seems to be the kinda chick that got discovered while working at the local check cashing.

1. Letoya - "Gangsta Grillz"
In the words of Lori Ann as she said to Dominique last season on "Making the Band 3": "I love a stinky face, but you're stinky face... HONEY BUNCHES OF OATS!" In other words, thank God for this uptempo track from Letoya, cause if I have to look at her stinky face while she performs "Torn" again, I might start to dislike her. "Gangsta Grillz" (the rumored title of T.I.'s next CD) bounces though so she still in the SOHH Soulful good graces.
[I'll upload this after I have my breakfast]
SOHH... Today's The New York Times Arts section takes a look at the women who are seeking to recapture pop music's elusive thrown. Of the five women surveyed, three (Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson & Beyonce(DING!)) have been mentioned here on SOHH Soulful and sohh... I thought I'd share some of the quotes from Kelefa Sanneh's article.
On Beyonce:
"The refrain doesn't give Beyonce a chance really to show off, and Jay-Z's second verse in particular sounds a bit clunky. It's a fair-to-middling single from a singer who is the opposite of desparate."
On Christina Aguilera:
"Listeners in search of the next 'Crazy In Love' should be looking instead to Christina Aguilera, the unpredictable former teen-pop star."
On Janet Jackson:
"Get back on the charts by recording a thug love duet. But why is the song -- which hasn't yet caught on at radio -- so bland? For a singer like Ms. Jackson, recovering from a perceived failure is tricky. Do you stick with what you're good at? Or do you change to match a changing audience?"

Ok, SOHH Soulman, I saw that article. No hear me out on this b/c I sort of got this idea from that article.
The song Deja Vu, really is about being in love with the song "Crazy in Love" and not about Jay. She does love the song "Crazy in Love". In fact she loves the song, so much that she is going to make the entire album B-Day with that same instrumentation. I mean it is not totally far fetched that she would use a metaphor when we know she does write some of her songs with Jay. She then decides to put Jay on the song b/c she knows people will buy into it for the same reason big studios make sequels to Blockbusters. Also, then Deja Vu becomes a good transition record for the rest of the album which is going to have that same live instrumentation feel.
Plus, she obviously thought a lot about the title of the song b/c Matthew said in some interview in the fall; that her singing in French at the Oscars wasn't a coincidence and that it would tie into her solo album. And then she is releasing the album jointly with her clothing line which is French Creole inspired. And the video is shot in New Orleans where the inspiration of her clothing line, her Grandmother is from.
Plus, the clothing line is about the women in her family and she said the record is about female empowerment. That is why the all female band and the reason she chose a female director for her first two videos.
That is also why I don't think Deja vu is about Jay. B/c "Dangerously in Love" was about a 20/21 year old women getting swept up by a much older, rich, powerful man.
But, the real question, I want to know about the BET awards is how the hell Tina convinced Jay to let her sew glitter on his pants.
Do you stick with what you're good at? Or do you change to match a changing audience?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I think that depends on who you are and how much risk you can afford to take. For some its far too late in the game to be trying to change up but the ones who are still moldable - although we all claim to want something uncanned - can be adjusted to the target market. I think thats Janet's whole problem. She's tryna adjust to the audience instead of bringing the audience to her. Ah well... we shall see in due time.
But on ANOTHER note....LOL.... SOHH and Rocky (I know u out there, lol) ya boy Buss just got added to the lineup for the musicfest. Baby Sham too. Now thats wassup!
JS.... if all you speculate is true, then they need a much better way of rendering these themes.
Bussa Bus gonna be stankin up the Roc... DKX better get an interview with him.
JS.... if all you speculate is true, then they need a much better way of rendering these themes.

Nah, innuendo works. And I think the female empowerment part is going to be introduced in the second single. As for the French theme, that will be a lot more obvious when the video comes out. And it doesn't really matter if most people don't get it b/c most of the American public is dumb. Why do you think songs like "My humps" goes to #1. We aren't looking for mind blowing lyrics when we listen to the radio.
As for Janet, is the record "call on me" really talking to her fans not Nelly.
JS-
That's a contradiction. How can innuendo work if as you say, "The American public is dumb?"
It's not a contradiction. To you think people knowingly get brainwashed. It is subliminal; that is what I meant.
I disagree about the public being "dumb" because songs that go to #1 are only a reflection of the PROACTIVE consumers at large (people who vote into countdowns and actually cop the official CDs) which at this point in time is primarily people under the age of 21. I dont think its fair to make a generalization like that just because "the public" youre referring to just isnt gettin what you say Bey's plotting. Why cant it just be that she's not conveying the ideas and piecing them together right? Why it gotta be us? LOL
SHAREEFA IS A GOOD LOOK FOR THE CAROLINAS!! {even if it is NC} HA!
Why would she say Janet's song hasn't caught on yet at radio when it debuted this week on the Hot 100 at #73 and is currently #23 on the R&B tally. Ms. thang needs to tighten up on her facts before she reports them!
Well, let's wait and see what happens. All I was trying to point out is I think that you are underestimating based on your blogs the true marketing genious of Beyonce, Matthew Knowles, and Jay-z. But that is my prediction.
SOHH Soulful:
You are the ONE and ONLY person I have ever heard say that they like that new Chingy song.
People have been slamming this song since Memorial Day weekend. I listened to the song Wednesday for the first time and it is straight garbage juice.
But hey, to each its own.
Well Lamar in comparison to Janet's past debuts and in comparison to other new songs that have hit the charts it may not be taking well to radio. I do believe that "Call On Me" has legs and is sticky enough to last.
"Deja Vu" entered at #44. I think... I am sure JS or Aston can confirm.
Chevy G.-
Man I like this song 'cause I like Tyrese and the sample they used is the same sample SWV used for "Rain on Me". It just feels good. Fuck the fact that Chingy's time has come and gone.
ok, on to commenting on the other songs.
I like Janet's single, but it sounds like something I've heard before. It is nothing special. But I think it was best to play it safe for the first single. I hope she does come back. I'm rooting for her.
As for Christina's single, I think it sounds exactly like that record she did with Nelly? Does anyone else feel that way. I thought her live MTV awards performances was good. she is a great live performer. She stays on pitch and she is pretty graceful on the stage.
As for LeToya, I don't think she can sing. Her voice sounds really winy to me.
And, Neyo. I don't know why, but I was underwhelmed by his CD.
Mm, well..... LOL. Ok.
SOHH that Chingy song is cool, I like that song too. I dont know if I would put it in my top 5 just yet but I do think their voices go well together. I dont think Tyrese should rap either, but more because Im afraid of him lookin like an ass. I like the guy, hate to see him do it to himself. But maybe he's nice, ya never know...........LOL.
Highest debut on the R&B charts in seven years
Just when you thought the smoke cleared from Beyonce's chart-burning debut at No. 20 on last week's Billboard Radio Monitor R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, "Call One Me" by Janet Jackson with Nelly shines one spot higher to become the best debut on the list in seven years. The No. 19 entry is the highest at the format since TLC's "No Scrubs" landed at No. 13 in February 1999. Meanwhile, "Call on me's" No. 28 debut on the Rhythmic Top 40 chart gives Jackson her first appearance as a lead artist at the format since "Son Of A Gun" entered the chart in November 2001. "Call on me" also opens at No. 36 at Adult R&B and No. 38 at Mainstream Top 40. "Call On Me" is the first single from Jackson's ninth studio album, "20 Years Old," due out later this year.
Janet's "Call on me" also debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts at #73 and at #23 in the Billboard R&B/Hiphop Charts after less than 14 days of airplay. [Billboard Chart Alert]
Dig-
I ain't calling Tyrese "Black Ty" his rapper moniker... I just ain't for it!
Thanks TJ!
That Shareefa joint is banging. I've actually had it for a minute. I don't know about the Jay/B song. But the Janet song is corny. I don't know what Jermaine is thinking. Why couldn't he use the formula that he used for Mariah?
your welcome, SOHH Soul Man.
Manifest-
That is MARIAH's formula... listen closely.
While you were wondering why are two of the three most popular hosts on BET (Black Entertainment Television) aren't black and why none of the hosts on Telemundo are.
Pickle-
I love Julissa. She lives up the street from me. But I really can't help but feel like, "Why is she hosting that particular show." I don't slight her, because she stepped up to the plate and seized the opportunity. I'm not sayin'... but I'm sayin.
The beat from that Chingy and Tyrese song is tight. The original sample is on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't remember the name. I think SWV or Faith used it before also. Help me out...
The only thing I'm feeling from Ne-yo at the moment is Remy's song "Feel So Good" featuring him. That song is pure project love.
:SOHH
"I love a stinky face, but you're stinky face... HONEY BUNCHES OF OATS!"
I can't get over that. I almost died after reading that one. Hilarious!
Anyhow. We all know to expect more from these 3 ladies (BEY CHRIS JANET). Let's just see what happens.
Good look on the SHAREEFA track. She has one with LAURYN HILL. Very nice. Reminds me of LIL MO/ NICOLE WRAY.
I love the CHINGY song ONLY because of TYRESE's verses. And, I am a fading LETOYA fan. Fading really quickly.
I just looked on the Billboard Charts this morning and Janet's song is NOWHERE to be FOUND!!! Period. It's not in the top 100. So not sure where yall getting your facts from. Beyonce and Christina are both in the TOP's. Beyonce is #37 on Hot 100 # 12 on Airplay and # 9 on Hot R&B and Hip Hop, Chrisitna is tearing the charts up with her single. But no Janet. That son gis WACK as hell Janet is wack, she can't sing. Give it up get out her ass you fucking worshippers.
As far as BET goes... I thought the 3 top VJs were TIG, JULISSA, and MELYSSA FORD. They are everywhere on the network. Who were you referring to SOHH?
Telemundo, Galavision, and the other gwala gwala stations always represent their own. That is why they have become such a strong force in this country. While we negroes hang around trying to belong. They make their own path.
Caff-
It was SWV! "Rain On Me"
Oh and I'm mad that you confused Tyrese with Citgo (Sisqo).
How can anyone stomach a present day Janet Jackson song? I haven't liked anything from her since the Poetic Justice theme song.
Black Ty? Are you serious?
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Oh Im soooo mad at him, LOL.
Rocky-
Since "106 & Park" is their most highly rated show, I am referring to Julissa (Dominincan) and DJ Pro Styles who will begin hosting more segments. Melyssa Ford's lil show has been cancelled. And they are not showing Big Tig the right kinda $love$ so he may soon depart.
Also... you know Letoya gives a stinky face when she performs. She has to learn her camera cues better. Something Bey (DING!) has perfected.
It seems the kiddies are feelin Cassie's shit right now.
#1 on MTV for the past three days.
Mad radio rotation.
Shit is hella catchy.
The synth work on the second chorus and bridge is '80s SICK!!!!
I've never been a Christina fan, but I liked her performance on MTV. But.....the video is lame as hell. Just a bunch of 'glamour' shots. Not feelin that video at all. No creativity.
At least with Cassie's video, I can think about how fine Janet was back in the day in them tight jeans.
:SOHH
Oh! I see. But hey, who knows what Debrah Lee is thinking. Didn't they recently hire some people like TOURE to change up some programming? And I though MELYSSA, JULISSA, and TIG were leaving. Making way for some idiots like TERRANCE J (really hate him), ROCSI and that other chick with the short hair... Dunno her name.
PS.. who is the girl in the above pic?
And did you watch the episode of 106 where CHINGY kept calling TYRESE "BLACK TY? He sounded so delighted to be calling him that. Like there was an inside joke or something. TYRESE gave him a face more than once, like, "Nukka, if you don't shut the #%&$..." I was rolling.
BEYONCE IS ON TOP
Rocky... you are right. Debra Lee (aside from trying to be a celebrity herself) has something up her sleeve. I actually think Terrance will make a good host... he reminds me of Bill Bellamy from MTV Jams days.
Tyrese better stick to what works. Remember when he hosted MTV Jams?
The girl in the photo above is actually Letoya Luckett... no really it is.
Lol. That pic must be pre-surgery days. Her nose makes her look like NIVEA a bit. Nice pic though.
TERRANCE J talks some kind of way that pisses me off. He stumbles words... kept saying "yo" and ugh!!!! He just annoys me. DEBBIE is definitely up to something. I hope it is one her todo list to bring BET up to par. Less T&A. More educational programming. They are lucky they are cable, because the FCC would be all over their asses for lack of educational programming.
Actually Toure isnt even new, they just recently started giving him something to do. But the whole set done changed since Debra became the law. I aint really been feelin it, its like its being suffocated or something.
Funny I just downloaded "Gangsta Grillz" on to my ipod last week...its an improvement because i wasnrt reall y feeling the whole "torn" craze...

:DIG
He has????? Damn. I know his show comes on on Sunday- the day I barely watch tv. Have you seen it? Isn't it with Danella? I like her, but BET gives her no shine.
People will be feeling the Beyonce song more when she comes out with a video and has a catchy little gyration to go with it that girls can do to the song. I like Christina's song, but that is because the girl can sing, and she can do pop, R&B, and I think she can pull of real soul if she tries. Janet....I love her, and I'm trying to feel the new song, but I everytime I hear it on the radio I'm trying to catch when she actually sings.....

Thanks!
Yeah Rocky, he was but you would rarely ever see him. He use to be an entertainment columnist or something somewhere too I think. Im not sure if Danella co-hosts with him or not. The only thing I have even seen her ass on was the battle of the sexes thing she co-hosted with Mad Lynx or whatever the wack Rap City dude name is. He disgusts me, I swear I cant even watch that shit no more.
SOHH SOuLMAn I didnt show any favortism in that last post for any of the artists..just stating what U.S Today wrote....
Now I will though.
Janet's "Call on Me" just debuted at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart..
