SOHH it seems that in order to be affiliated with G-Unit, one must have a beef with another rapper or singer or someone. Such is the case with R&B trio Next, who just signed with G-Unit. Yeah you read that right, Next. We all know that money makin' 50 Cent has a penchant for reinventing those who are no longer "commercially" successful. Just like Olivia and Mobb Depp -- RL, TLow and Tweety join the ranks of those swinging from Fiddy's gonads!
RL has a song titled "Hater In You" making rounds on the internet where he aims and fires at R&B groups 112 and Jagged Edge. On the song, he claims allegiance to DJ Whoo Kid and G-Unit. The lyrics are sung over the Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U" instrumental.
"Ain't nothing new/ain't helping you/we roll with Whoo Kid/what are you doing?" RL fires at 112 and Jagged Edge on the track, before singing out "G-G-G-G-G-Unit."
Now, who the hell is taking Next seriously? I mean, come on guy! But don't sleep, similar to hip-hop, beefs are soon to be the newest trend to stir controversy and creativity in R&B.
R&B singer Kev Samples out of Atlanta who is affiliated with but NOT signed to G-Unit, just teamed up with DJ Whoo Kid to produce the DEATH OF R&B mixtape. On the mixtape, Kev takes shots at Ray-J and does parodies of Trey Songz, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and your favorite actor-turned-R&B singer, Jamie Foxx. It's supposedly all in good fun and Kev wants it known that he keeps his beefs on wax.
When asked why take this approach, Kev told me:
"R&B is boring, beefs in hip hop make it exciting. I am challenging the current artist to be creative and stirring up some controversy. Controversy sells." We'll see if it sells when Kev's solo debut cd hits shelves this fall."
