The video features Pharrell and Snoop and is shot in Paris. We've all read about the hoopla. What I don't understand is why the 50 million beauty shots. Here you have a song that could bang even more if it had a narrative video. Same with Mary J. Blige's "Enough Cryin'". Why has the new trend for videos (thanks to Hype Williams limited directing and editing skills) become only about iconic images. Beauty shot, after beauty shot, after beauty shot!
We already know that its all about you Mariah. You're platinum++++++. Janet wants to work with you. You have a tour thats about to pop off. We get it. But why would you waste Snoop and Pharrell's time like that. Snoop is a champ and he kills his verse, but he's been restricted to sitting in a chair while you change clothes like 85 times. No thanks. Mariah and MJB both are afraid of getting old. Now before anyone attacks me I'm a HUGE MJB fan, I own every album, but I have to speak the truth. Mariah tries too hard to be sexy, it's like she's trying to say to people "Look I'm not old, I'm still pretty, Don't you think I'm a pretty girl". And look at Mary in that Touch It video. The woman is afraid of aging and to agree with what Raynne said MC has low self esteem.
That made me pissed that Pharell and Mariah all running around town doing things in different places and then they got snoop siting in a damn chair with a black shirt in a black background. Pharell is just as gulity as mariah cuz he got his beauty shots in 2.
I agree w/whoever said that Mariah tries too hard. Remember when she came out with that "Charmbraclet" cd a few years ago? I was watching VH1 and they were talking about the time period surrounding the release of that album and how up until her emotional breakdown, she was doing everything in her power to sell that CD (if you recall, she made an appearance on MTV w/Carson Daly, and she rolled in with an icecream cart wearing a long t-shirt, then proceeded to strip down to a bikini top and little boy shorts). Carson was even looking at her saying to himself "this girl is trying too hard and has lost her mind!" She should've learned from that whole debacle that this 'sex appeal' thing is temporary and no one really cares in the end. Her voice sells records, not her image (she actually has talent, unlike most of these females out today who only have their image to sell their product).
Remember in the early '90's when she first came out? she was like the 'girl next door' and that had nothing to do with her selling millions of records. Her voice is the reason she is the best selling female artist of all time.
The 'Emancipation of Mimi' was the best CD of 2005, but these videos (with the exception of "We Belong Together") were ridiculous. Pharell has been a huge disappointment these past couple of years. The NERD CD was horrible and the single w/Gwen Stefani was horrendous (btw,what happened to the solo album to follow?). However, I must say that I can't wait for the Robin Thicke album to drop.

Just cause he's not as flashy as most of the non singers out here today just riding on their looks, doesnt mean that he shouldnt get his props. His stage presence may not be as strong but he has a beautiful voice. He needs a new promotion team cause I didnt even know his record was out yet.

See this is why I am in love with your blog, Soulman. You look so far outside of the box. I totally agree. We've seen enough of Mariah's beauty shots. The song is a great song...a great, substantial video would have made it even better. Female artists have been forced to become their own video hos. It kinda sucks because when you think about it, that's what a lot of the kids are used to seeing, so female artists are so afraid to come out with something important and timeless.

Mariah is one of my favorite vocalists, so I really HATE the image she's portraying these days. Tryin too hard is an understatement. But I think its related to her split from Mottola, she probably felt like she got early parole or something, got that freedom and just started wildin' out, lol. IMO, she's never been the best with videos though. I been meaning to talk to her about that LOL.

You know, now that I think about it, his performances aint strong either. He pretty much just stands there and sings and to carry off something bland like that, you really gotta have a strong voice, or at least have a track record that says "I already put my work in so Ima just stand here and yall gon like it" LOL.
