I never really looked at Michael as being bigger than Prince. While both were clearly Pop artists, they were so differant. Prince's music was sexier than Michael's. Mikes videos were more lavish. Both put on a hell of a show and still sell out stadiums to this day with grossly overpriced tickets. Sure Mike sold more in the 80s. He sold more than anyone, but Prince was still just as big as far as exposure due in large part to his movie Purple Rain. They are both bad as hell and I would give the rent money to get a good seat to either one's concert. Thanks for the tribute for the grown folks.

Well Michael Jackson a complete entertainer, his art is perfect, and Prince is more about quantity, and Michael Jackson is quality, I like Prince but I think Michael Jackson is a perfectionist and so his music and visual image are better.

I think both are great. They both have different qualities. Prince can play all the instruments, but Mike is a hell of a dancer. Prince does more R`n`B songs, Michael challenges himself in different types of music. He can pull off rock, soul, pop, compositions like Will you be there and so on. If you look at the history, every genius is little out there. Michael has issues from his childhood that he has hard time to get over with, but look at other performers who are, or most of them were, great. Most of them died young because of drug overdose or suicide. Michael is a strong personality. He can drag himself out of the mudd he sometimes falls in. He has drive and passion. I blame his uproductivity to all that shit he went through during the last 15 years. Lawsuites, lawsuites, lawsuites. That takes him away from working. But he is not done yet. In last 5 years he sold more than 20 million record. His last album came out in 2001. That`s awesome. People still likes what he has to offer. Prince is productive but he doesn`t sell as much.

Prince had quantity and quality because he didn't have his ole man influencing what he made and put out. MJ had the sales, but Prince had the ppl. Too many classics "Lady Cab Driver" "Adore" "Sign of the Times" Prince was & is still ahead of his time. He will go down as one of the top five artist/performers of anytime. And he's still normal by Prince standards.

I remember back in 1984, I was a fan of both Prince & MJ, they were like the yin and the yang for me, Mike, I guess U could say, was more 4 the children, and Prince, though I was a kid @ the time, was more 4 the adults, but I know the first time I seen Purple Rain, and Prince was getting busy with Apollonia, I wanted 2 do the same thing, though I was a kid then, Purple Rain, actually Prince's music, made me wanna go out & have sex, plus Prince is a musical genius, not taking anything away from MJ, but duke plays 26 instruments, need I say more?

Easy question answer is PRINCE on his first album he played every instrument sang lead and background vocals MJ is studio shit he couldnt sing the national anthem live if he had janet jermaine and the rest of the jacksons with him, Prince is a REAL singer he could sing it in every key

Michael Jackson for sure!!! Really, you can't compare the two! OK, so Prince has a couple nice songs...but Michael has written hit after hit after hit! OK, so Prince plays the instruments, but did you know that Michael actually "writes" music by immitating the sound of any instrument? He's like an "orchestra man"... Just unbelievable!! I have a tape of him in court demonstrating how he comes out with all those melodic lines...and he always keeps a tape-recorder nearby in case some new idea comes into his head, and records the melody as if there was a complete orchestra in the room, and then takes it in the studio and has people work on it... You should hear him!!! You would surely propose him for the Guiness Book, that's how awesome he is. Plus, I know he plays a few instruments too. And what I find amazing is that all the new artists admit that Mike has been their idol and inspiration...so all the trendy music now (like Destiny's Child, Celine Dion, Missy Elliott etc.) is really because of him! Truly blessed!!!

Sorry, I'm a die hard fan so I gotta make some corrections. Thriller, the album was released in 1982 but the single and video were released in 84 and it went on to sell over 50 million records. That said, I love both Mike and Prince! They are both genius' and don't get it twisted, Mike plays instruments and produces his own music too (read the credits). Lastly this blog should have no mention of any personal stuff about either artist. This blog is about music and I know some of ya'll base who you listen to off of image but that's whack. Leave this discussion for true music fans who appreciate art.

15-20 years ago, if someone asked me who was freakier, Prince or Michael Jackson, I think we all know who would have one that crown, but damn how things have changed..Anywho, I have to say I love both MJ and Prince, I remember the day I got my copy of Thriller, (which I still have to this day on vinyl), but I also remeber the first time I heard Purple Rain on my Fisher Price radio, and I thought it was absolutely the most beautiful song I had ever hear (damn if I was only 5, or 6). And to this day the same joy and elation I felt from listening to their music, I still feel today. I can't debate who is better, because they are both without a doubt legendary. You can't find artist's like these anymore (IMO). And being alive to see them at their best (MJ had Motown 25, and Prince had the best American Band stand and MTV interviews back in the day) so, I can only sum this comparison up as such. When I was a young girl, I was for MJ. But as I grew into my own, I could really "appreciate" Prince's music more. It's something about going back and watching Purple Rain or under the Cherry Moon, as an adult and really catching all the freaky shit he was on back then......Ok, I need to go smoke a cigarette, I'm takin' a 15.(tehe!)

Who gives a fuck about Bruce Springsteen??? This is about Prince and MJ. Prince is directly and indirectly responsible for some of the greatest R&B since he came out. He put on Morris Day and the Times, which featured Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who produced countless R&B hits(including Jacko' sister Janet). Jacko's music was good, but it was more a product of his producers and his live entertainment. I take that back, Jacko's music was great. To me Prince has more talent. This is just one man's opinion.

I not quite sure why you posted that URL, it only proves that MJ is higher up on the list than Prince, so you have just shot yourself in the foot in my opinion - because I not really sure what point you were trying to make.

Looking on some of the other charts on that site MJ also features higher than Prince every single time, example on the Diamond Album Awards representing sales of over 10 Million, MJ comes 2nd with Thriller (worth noting that whilst the album is the 2nd best seller in the US it comes 1st worldwide) & Prince comes way down the list at 30th with Purple Rain (which I admit is a brilliant album)

I not saying Prince is not a good artist, because he is a excellent artist and has a fabulous back catalogue - but I sorry you just can't compare him with Michael. I don't even think Price comes close to the likes of Elvis, the Beatles, Madonna, or the Bee Gee's - all megastars, which Prince is not a megastar, he is just a star - he comes more on a level of Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Whitney Houston, and Paul McCartney (as a solo artist) - all superstars. And I think this opinion of MJ being better and more popular than Prince is held by my most people, sure MJ is not as popular and "sellable" as he once was (as I am sure you agree Prince isn't either) because both of their sales records have fallen since the 80's. In terms of fame MJ also wins that round as I sure half the people here in Britain have never heard of Prince, and for those who have can only name 2 or 3 of his songs. At the recent Brit Awards last week Prince was treated as a B' List celebrity, were-as MJ who attended the Brits 10 years earlier in 1996 won the Artist of a Generation award and was all over the FrontPages the next morning (sure for the wrong reasons, but if someone invaded Princes stage nobody would care) which I think could suggest Prince is a little disinteresting, and for that people may find him a little but boring.

And I not one of these diehard fans of MJ because I admit not all of songs are great (Little Susie, 2000 Watts for example are terrible) and Prince has also made some not-to-good tracks. But what I think is a good eye-opener and quite interesting is this - in 1984 Prince released Purple Rain, it sold 18/19 million and is his bestseller, the record that he is most known for and is widely considered his best. In 1995 Michael released HIStory, it sold just over 20 million and is one of his lowest selling albums and was considered a flop. How is it that MJ sells more than Prince and its a flop, and Prince sells less than MJ and its a hit??? I want you to write a response to this question!

I think the answer is that MJ's other albums are just so big that anything Michaels releases these days that sells less than 30 million is a flop, if compare Prince to this commendation then all of his albums are flops. Also note that not even one Prince's albums have sold over 20 million mark yet (though PR is very close), whereas Michael has 4 albums (and nearly 5 albums as Off the Wall is close) that have passed the 20 million mark. Also note that most of the comments posted on this forum are in favor of Michael Jackson.

Finally though it may sound like a contest between the two, the is no contest as there is a clear winner – Michael Jackson, the King of Pop!
