This post is numbered because this should really be an ongoing conversation. Not like you cookie cutters have it every day in the comments section, but with real intellect and arguments made from reality. We're not blind. There's a lot of great music coming out of West Coast artists, but it has hardly had a commercial impact since the early-'90s. We'll keep investigating why, but remember, let's just keep it civil.
As far as I'm concerned there are five reasons why the West's relevance isn't what it was:
(1) Nationalization of West Coast radio by Clear Channel and other conglomerates
(2) Lack of business foresight by West Coast pioneers
(3) Bad Karma (you know who you are)
(4) Globalization via the internuts
(5) Cookie cutter fans who demand that artists stick within that bass-heavy '92 gangsta rap format but still expect something new and different
This post is about #5. Giving new artists and, most importantly, new sounds a fair shot and the right support (when they deserve it) are the only way that regional sounds survive. New York rap used to push its sound every few months and up until the domination of ringtone rap, so had the South....but the West? There is no support for new sounds. So, with this diatribe right here, I ask you to listen to Blu. An artist who's lived all across Los Angeles and made plenty of Okayplayer noise in 2007. It ain't bass-heavy '92 gangsta rap, but it is his own sound.

basicallly a lot of what was said in the first post, plus the lack of the target market being technology friendly has a lot to do with it. I work with artists and producers on marketing mainly and that is a big problem. No Def Jams, No Colombia's and I am talking about exclusively regarding the Bay. Plus the southern region and the northern region are like 2 separate countries. It's a myarid of problems but me and others are working on the solutions. 2008 will see the beginning of that change. I guarntee it.

Gangsta music is dark and vilonet sounding - that is why it resonates on the west.
Every other region copies the sound. The bottom line is that demographics dictate the market and likelihood of success.
Niggas in the south support southern artists. The black belt will automatically give you a large market.
Eastcoast cannot sell units and really has done that since everybody felt sorry of Biggie and bought his shit out of loyalty.
Niggas in the south try to pump up their region by purchasing Southern artists music.
Whites catch on after blacks in the South popularize their artists.
Westcoast shit still sounds the best. Westcoast mixtapes are better than Eastcoast albums. I won't even comment on the South becuase most of that shit is shitty.
