Are "Hip Hop Weeklies" Changing Music?

Shouting out the founder of Facebook over Timbaland production? Only Crooked I could ever claim that.
Forty two weeks into his historic Hip Hop Weekly series, people are finally catching onto what this all means. It's been a genius marketing tactic and a glorious display of talented productivity....and it's a safe bet that the buzz will only grow. 234 other websites have posted his newest freestyle, so I'm not going to bother zsharing it or hyperlinking anywhere else. But here's the question for today--because we'll surely readdress Crooked I in the next 10 weeks--with the decline of albums, could this be a blueprint for the future of music?
And kids, please, let's keep this discussion real. No fake posts and homophobic rants and derogatory defamation. No making fun of Game's butterfly tattoo or wildly misquoting first week sales or saying anyone fell off. Let's stay focused here, cookie cutters, focused.
Is there a way to monetize Crooked I's Hip Hop Weekly series and could it one day replace the album as a source of income?

No, this will be the future on how to flop harder than Too Short (sorry Craig has Clapps). This tatic has been used before and shit like this doesn't work anymore. 50, Lil Wayne have done this via mixtapes. I guess Crooked I music is so shitty that he has to give it away for free. I think it's sad and I kinda feel sorry for him, . . yeah right! The only thing Crooked I is going to get out of this is more bookings at the Blue Oyster Bar.

why does everyone say that too short flopped? that dude is independent...you can't hold him to the same standards as a mainstream label. too short sold less than a lot of people, but at the same time, made more than your favorite artist....how is that flopping....but on the crooked i situation, i get tired of hearing about how good he is, how he is the savior of the west (the real one), and all that other bullshit. dude been trying to get out an album for like 33 years....when we gonna hear something??? i have heard so much hype on this dude, he can't possibly live up to it for me...so i will never buy an album, never download another track, nothing. i didnt even think that on 2pac's Nu Mixx cd, that he did justice to amerika's most wanted remix....oh well...

I mean, if people are only downloading singles off I-Tunes anyway. Maybe if he makes it a "HipHop Weekly" on I-Tunes where he releases a new track each week.
Right now duke is givin away HEAT for free. Crooked is one of the best of the west hands down. He can rip over down south, boom bap, west coast, any kinda beat. I been listenin to alot of Crooked lately, and the weeklies are dope, and the mixtapes are dope, but until its made into a format where it can be distributed for money, than he isnt making any. I truly believe that Crooked can be a breakthrough artists. You put enough hot shit out there and you'll get a fanbase. I know I trust from his mixtapes and his weeklies that if he did drop an album, I would buy it. Because I trust his ability to make good music. So in that respect, its already making him money.
Unless he gets with Zune, or I-Tunes, or a pay d/l site and starts his weeklies there instead of DubbCnn, then whatev.
So in short, in the time of cats who d/l singles and the particular songs they like from I-Tunes it could completely work.
But, I like getting my weeklies free from DubCnn, so Im hoping it dosent happen too soon, lol.

I still go out n buy, but only shit I believe deserves it. Joell, Redman, Sean P, Strong Arm, ect. So I would buy a Crooked I album. Im bumpin the Dynasty Boss Vol 2 right now. heh.
I guess anything is possible when it comes to marketing on the internet.
What I do know is that Hip-Hop Weekly has started a new online marketing trend for other artists and DJ's as well.
-- Freeway (Roc-A-Fella artist) did a brief weekly series from August - December called "Freeway Freestyle Friday's" in order to create buzz for his new album that dropped in December.
-- E-Knoc (underground West Coast artist) also started a weekly series called "Fryday Series" back in September. It went on for 9 weeks before he stopped.
-- Young Dre The Truth (underground West Coast artist) started his own version of weekly's called "Monumental Monday's" back in November. His weekly series is still active as of Jan. 2008.
-- Roccett (signed to Young Jeezy's CTE label) just started doing "Weekly Hookup" in Jan. '08 where he asks fans to answer a new trivia question about him that can be found on his myspace page. The winner receives a brand new Makaveli Branded outfit delivered to them. There is also a "Grand Prize" awarded at the end of each month. This series is still active.
-- 40 Glocc (Infamous/G-Unit artist) has also started doing a new weekly series in Jan. '08 where he'll be dropping free songs online along with his affiliated artists, Zoo Babies. This series is still active.
-- Sha Stimuli (underground artist from Brooklyn) recently announced that he'll be dropping a brand new mixtape online every month in 2008. This series began in Jan. '08.
-- DJ EMI had his own series also dubbed "Hip-Hop Weekly" where he mixed & uploaded a new mixtape every Saturday with the "hottest songs" of that week. It went on for 6 weeks between September and October '07.
How this trend will play out in the near future (or if it'll play out at all considering if it shows any potential monetary promise in record label's eyes) is too early to call right now.
But I'm sure with the continued lagging sales in hip-hop, a lot of record labels are considering an alternative method for marketing digitally in the near future. But again, it's too early to tell if the online marketing blueprint that Crooked I laid down via Hip Hop Weekly will produce profitable results in the foreseeable digital future?

This is a blueprint for nothing except Crooked. It doesn't change anything, it just jumps on Soulja Boy's bandwaggon that's rolling right now. Just like the old model, it's going to be hard, perhaps harder, to find talented artists and hard for talented artists to find an audience.
Rap has always been a singles medium for the average fan. Music fans/critics and hardcore heads love the long form. With the former making up the largest number of buyers, it's no wonder that album sales are off while ringles and itunes sales of rap are going up.
If anything, hip hop weeklies are a symptom of what is already going on.
