SOHH LEFT COAST -

5 Favorite West Coast Albums Of All Time

Posted on August 30, 2007 1:55 AM

28_AC-book.jpg

Tomorrow's my last day here at SOHH, but before I bounce, I’m interested in hearing everyone’s five favorite West Coast hip hop albums of all time. You don’t need to give a reason or an explanation as to why, you don’t need to critique and/or talk sh*t on other people’s choices, and you don’t need to give a song by song description of the album... Just list ‘em off.

For those of you who are a little open-minded, maybe you’ll do some research and come across something you really like. Those of you who are d*ckheads will probably continue to act like neglected junior high school students and try to start some kind of unprovoked and unnecessary conflict with another reader.

And then I’ll probably just delete your comment.

In case any of you are interested, here are a few of my favorite West Coast hip hop albums of all time. There may be some other albums that I like just as much as a couple of these, but these were the first to come to mind and I tried to include a few that aren’t going to show up on 30 other people’s list.

In no particular order...

Dr. Dre- The Chronic: Duh. To save time on hearing complaints of “why wasn’t such and such album from so and so on your list?”, we’ll just make this album interchangeable with Doggystyle, Straight Outta Compton and Life Is... Too Short, Dogg Food, In A Major Way, The Menace II Society Soundtrack, and all of the other obvious ones.

Ice Cube- The Predator: Maybe it’s all of the dope Muggz beats or maybe it’s the fact that Cube sounded angrier on this album than on any other album- even if a lot of said anger was directed at the crackers (me). “We Had To Tear This Muthaf*cka Up” is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

Aceyalone- Book Of Human Language: The general of Freestyle Fellowship decided that his sophomore joint would be a concept album with one producer (that producer being Mumbles), and it was the best decision he ever made. Every beat is dope, and the creativity and lyrical talent that Acey displays on here is ridiculous. The album’s fairly hard to find, but if you can find it, buy it. And if you haven't heard it, that doesn't mean the album's not dope- it just means that it's a dope album you've never heard.

Tha Alkaholiks- 21And Over/Coast 2 Coast/Likwidation: I can’t really pick between their first three albums, so I won't try to. They’re all amazing in their own way. I still think that back when Tash was in his prime (as he was on these albums), he was easily one of the top 3 West Coast MCs of all time.

Xzibit- At The Speed Of Life: There was a balance of introspective lyrics, witty wordplay and sheer hunger on this album that is relatively unmatched by any album since its release. While he’s definitely not a sh*tty MC by any means now, I still think that he never reallly came off this dope on any of his other albums. This was the album that announced his arrival on the scene, and everybody in the game immediately took him seriously after they heard it.

I had to get Snoop in there, I listened to that album all the time. But, I needed to put a slept on west coast classic on there. When I first heard 'We Come Strapped', i fell in love with the west. For some reason, that album sticks out crazy for me. It was just so real, and the tracks "All for the Money", "Death Wish III", shit was crazy.

I gotta co-sign on that right there homie you couldnt have said any better about Livin Like Hustlers, thats one of my favorite west coast albums and im only 23 years old.
My favorite top 5 in no paticular order even though its hard to just list 5.
1)No One Can Do It Better - The DOC aka the ghostwriter behind The Chronic, its a shame that his vocal chords were severed in that car accident,no telling where he'd be right now. One of the best classic albums from beginning to end that Dr. Dre produced.
    2)AMERIKKAS MOST WANTED/DEATH CERTIFICATE/THE PREDATOR - Ice Cube.
    3)Doggystyle- Snoop Dogg
Back when he was in his prime making this album, from beginning to end this album you can play from beginning to end. This is one of the many influential albums heavily including the g-funk production.
    4)Dogg Food- The Dogg Pound.
5)Quik Is The Name - DJ Quik

    Honorable Mention
1)Livin Like Hustlers - Above The Law
    2)All of Comptons Most Wanted's first 3 Albums : Its A Compton Thang/Straight Checkin Em & Music 2 Driveby.
    3)Against The World - 2pac
    4)All Eyes On Me - 2pac

Gangsta suppose to feed those hungry for street realities they can relate to. Underground feeds the backpackers who love lyrics. Even songs gettin play at parties and clubs was about somethin. Who remebers when you couldn't be at a party without hearing Pistol grip pump by Volume 10 gangstas on the wall had a theme song. And 2nd II None wit just cause I didn't say(I don't know if thats the title but real ones know)lLet the chicks know what you were there for.
