Snoop Dogg presents The Big Squeeze: The Official Rundown

It’s been a little while that I’ve been sitting on this Snoop compilation that dropped on April 24th, but I’ve had the time to listen to it a few times and today I’m finally ready to give you the review.

For those who don’t already know, the album’s official title is Snoop Dogg Presents: The Big Squeeze. And while Snoop does appear on 12 of 15 tracks in one form or another, it’s more often on the hook or talking at random moments throughout a song than in the form of an actual verse. Although Snoop did end up leaving most of the mic duties to the album’s main cast- consisting of Kurupt, Damani, JT Tha Bigga Figga, Goldie Loc, Soopafly, MC Eiht, Uncle Chuck, Bad Lucc, Ricky Harris, Azure, Kam, Jay Black, Terrace Martin and Ray J, who is Snoop’s cousin -his presence is still felt throughout the album. This time around, however, Snoop took on the role of producer.

Under the alias of Niggaracci, Snoop manned the boards to create the beats for all but three of the songs on the album (production on “We Came To Bang out”, “Can U Get Away?”, and “Be Thankful” was handled by Soopafly, David Banner and Terrace Martin, respectively). And while an album full of vocals from Snoop’s homies rapping on Snoop tracks might sound interesting, the final product is, unfortunately, a little uninspired.

While Snoop/Niggaracci definitely does show some musical chops in the beginning stages of his production career, he might have wanted to spend a bit longer honing his skills before presenting them to the world, especially on an album that had such potential as this one. The lyrical performances on The Big Squeeze are surprisingly consistent for a compilation, and the different styles showcased create some diversity, without sounding disjointed. Unfortunately, the energy laid out by all of the rappers is paired with 15 underproduced beats that remain at almost exactly the same tempo from first to last.

Some of Snoop’s production definitely does show potential; although the beat on “Fuckin’ Is Good For U” doesn’t change up whatsoever, even during the hook, it is dense and interesting enough to tolerate for 4 minutes and 35 seconds. In other cases, some minor alterations in a snare here or a kick there would’ve made all the difference in the world. And in the case of “Pop Pop Bang”, it’s a pretty good song, but Kurupt sounds uncomfortable rapping as slow as he is- if the tempo had been picked up just a little, the song could’ve been twice as good.

There are a couple slip ups on the vocals side as well; on “Get It Started”, Snoop actually came through with a legitimate party record (in the form of a Teena Marie remake), only to have it spoiled by Azure’s generic R&B schtick. And Damani fails to impress at any point on the album, even with a track called “All About Damani.” But for the most part, everybody came through with solid verses- Kurupt sounds like he’s hungry again, and the songs that feature Warzone (Kam, MC Eiht and Goldie Loc) continue to raise the anticipation for an album from the group.

All in all, Snoop’s future in producing looks like it might hold some promise, but he may have been a little premature in thinking that it could support this particular compilation.

And now, your City Guide for the week:

And for the record, I have no idea what in the hell is going down in Southern Cali this week. As always, if you would like to let me know about an event going on in your area, feel free to hit me up at www.myspace.com/sohhleftcoast.

  • WOW....I see we have all the OFFICIAL east coast and west coast reps in the house...LOL. On the real, I'm not messing with that Snoop Compilation. Snoop needs to search the coast for new LYRICISTS. Then he needs to sign them to contracts where they don't get raped. Then he needs to promote them. Snoop has been fucking with the same people for years, raping them, then raping them some more. He needs to break some new artists. Dr. Dre needs to break artists faster....where the hell is Biship Lamont???Is he gonna give his album over to someone else to ala Game?? Cali got the indie underground shit popping, but our mainstream artists have to break new mainstream artists, so we can have lyricists in the mainstream like we do in the underground.
