Remembering A West Coast Classic: "The Devil Made Me Do It" by Paris

Hopefully everyone had a good weekend. Now it’s time to get back to the grind by starting the week the same way we always do: with a West Coast Classic.

Although militantly political rappers were running amok during the early nineties, there was one rapper who came out of San Francisco and made some major waves in 1990 with the release of his debut album, The Devil Made Me Do It.

That rapper was, of course, Paris and today’s Classic is the title song from that album.

It’s too bad this video was banned by MTV (you know, back when they still actually played music), because it would’ve been dope if more people got put on to Paris’ music; he was an incredible lyricist, and although I didn’t always agree with everything in his rhymes, he had a message that he was passionate about, which is something that you can’t say about a good portion of dudes in the game these days.

After releasing The Devil Made Me Do It, Paris went on to release Sleeping With The Enemy in 1992, but due to the track “Bush Killa”, and the album’s inside cover art (which featured the rapper hiding behind a tree with an assault rifle, waiting to knock off the former president), Tommy Boy refused to release it. Paris released the album independently, and it went on to sell a respectable 400,000 units. Paris then went on to release Guerilla Funk in 1994, and Unleashed in 1998.

Although Paris “retired” around 1998 to work as a stockbroker (besides rapping, Paris also had a degree in economics from UC Davis), he popped up again in 2003 with a new album entitled Sonic Jihad, which was released on his label, Guerrilla Funk. In 2006, Paris produced the Public Enemy album Rebirth of a Nation; he also wrote the majority of Chuck D’s lyrics for the album, which was also released on Guerrilla Funk. A new Conscious Daughters album is apparently scheduled for release this year through the label, and new albums from Kam and MC Ren are scheduled to be released through the label in the near future as well.

  • The east always had love for paris..If you dug crates you knew who this man was. For his time he was a force to be recognized. It's what the game is missing explosive lyricists who can grind without a major push and for the record tommy boy was a major label with major label money but not major label power..so him pushing what he did with no tv or radio was huge!! Thanks for the update. Long live chico from the tommy boy days!! RIP 72-97

  • It's amazing what was banned and considered bad back in the day. Compare that to the garbage they allow today, and look at the message sent by the garbage that's allowed, it's very upsetting.
