I know I had said a few weeks ago that I would be reviewing albums from Butch Cassidy and Damizza, Lifesavas, Alchemist, A-Plus, Bukue One and Hieroglyphics. To be more specific, I said it on April 6th. It’s only fair that I catch up on all of that before I move on to a new topic, so here we go...
I know nobody wants to read 6 long ass reviews, so I’ll keep 'em short and to the point.
Butch Cassidy & Damizza Back B4 You’re Lonely
I’m sorry, but this shit sucks. Butch can’t really rap, Damizza’s the poor man’s Nate Dogg, and the production is lackluster. The whole CD sounds like it was made for teenage girls who don’t know anything about rap music.
Lifesavas Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack
I liked their debut album, Spirit In Stone, but I didn’t love it. This, on the other hand is one of the better underground releases I’ve heard all year. They’re still on some backpacker shit, but not in the spaced-out-nerd-raps, super-minimal production sense of the description (like some of the other Quannum releases). The album has tons of soul, the rhymes are intelligent and heavy on punchlines, their delivery is raw, and the production is nearly flawless, courtesy of the Lifesavas’ own Jumbo the Garbageman, Shines and Vursatyl, as well as Oh No, Vitamin D, and Jake One . And the guest list for the album? George Clinton, Camp Lo, Ish of Digable Planets, Smif N Wessun and dead prez. This one’s a must-have; even if you’re not typically into this kind of stuff, go to itunes and listen to the 30 second samples of all of the songs, and you just might change your mind.
Alchemist - Rapper’s Best Friend
An instrumental album from Alchemist- sounds dope in theory, right? Yeah, unfortunately it’s not all that good. It has a couple of new instrumentals alongside instrumentals for joints that he’s done for Mobb Deep, Jadakiss, Tony Yayo, and Dilated Peoples, among others. The idea with this album was to provide aspiring emcees with some beats to practice to, and aspiring emcees are about the only people who will have any use for this album, other than the most die-hard of Alchemist fans. You’re better off picking up the new Prodigy joint, which he produced entirely, going back and swooping on No Days Off, or waiting until his solo joint that drops this summer.
A-Plus - My Last Good Deed
I really wish I had something good to say about this album, because A-Plus has done a lot of amazing work in his career, and he’s a hella nice dude. Unfortunately, I couldn’t feel a single song on this whole album. The lyrics on here are so-so, but the production just sucks. I’m just gonna leave it at that.
Bukue One - Intromission
Same goes for this one, but it was the other way around- decent production and weak-ass raps. I really got my hopes up for the joint with Saafir on it, too.
Hieroglyphics - Over Time
I had just about every song on here on various records and albums laying throughout my house, but it’s nice to have them all on one album. Almost every one of the 14 songs on here is top-notch, with the exception of two or three songs that are only decent. There’s one song on here that is worth the purchase price of the entire album in itself, though: the Automator remix of Del’s classic ode to hygiene, “If You Must.” This is still one of the funniest hip hop tracks I’ve ever heard.

As for the music listed up there... yawn... I like Hiero but they're hit or miss. Not consistant enough for me as is the case with most hip-hop (I spelled it right KRS-1!)

Bickering back and forth about North Cal vs Southern Cal is pointless. The industry acts like they don't wanna fuck with either of us, so that's just stupid. North Cal has dope underground shit, like Hiero, South Cal got dope underground shit like Dilated. North Cal has legends like Too Short and E40, south cal got legends like Cube and Dre.
As for the reviews, I probably wouldn't fuck with any of those. I don't do greatest hits (with the exception of the Rakim greatest hits) and those other dudes, I don't know. Normally I don't fuck with underground unless it has some connection to some shit I already know of, because Most Underground Rap Sucks. The only time i went out on a limb with some shit that had no connection was Black Milk, which was cool, but I don't really listen to.
