SOHH LEFT COAST -

Finally, A West Coast Indie Veteran Gets A Major Label Deal

With all of the talk of a major change needing to take place in the mainstream hip hop world, something pretty monumental took place earlier this month. A full 10 years after he dropped his first full length, F’real, it was announced that Murs signed a deal with a major label. After dropping his last solo album The End Of The Beginning on Def Jux, and releasing two albums with 9th Wonder on the rock indie label Record Collection, the Living Legends lyricist will be releasing his next LP, tentatively titled Murs For President on Warner Bros.

This will challenge the resolve of those who complain about the current state of hip hop, and more specifically, what is played on the radio. Although it’s possible that WB will target a niche market (i.e. college radio, open-minded alternative rock fans, etc.), the same thing was done with Gnarls Barkley, and they went on to go platinum. But the ball could bounce either way- if the label decides to market Murs’ music via radio play, listeners may embrace hearing something different, or they might reject it completely because it sounds different from what they’re used to hearing every day.

And most importantly, the west might actually have a successful rapper who isn’t on some gangster shit.

As far as Warner’s decision to introduce an underground veteran to the masses, I don’t think that they could’ve made a better choice. Those of us who are already familiar with his music already know that lyrically, he could destroy 95% of the rappers who currently have major label deals. But he has a relatively traditional style, and for the most part, it won’t be hard for hip hop fans who have brought up on tales of urban struggle or on storytelling to relate to the subject matter that Murs tends to cover. And in the event that some new listeners come out to his shows when he hits the road to tour the album (and believe me, that man tours like a muthafucka), some people will actually learn about stage presence for the first time, and find out what a true performer does live.

I'm not going to get ahead of myself and say that this deal is going to serve as some sort of catalyst for a changing of the guard in mainstream hip hop, but it just might add some diversity to what's currently being presented to people by way of mass media. And with the current state of mainstream hip hop, that would definitely be a good thing.

Murs has said that he will record 50 songs for Murs For President and then pick the best 15 songs to put on the album. He is currently somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 songs into the project, and is rumored to be working with some big-name artists like Snoop Dogg, Three Six Mafia, The Game, Rick Rock and Nottz in the studio. Time will tell if these rumors turn out to be true, and it’s be great to see Murs spit alongside some big names (and most likely, son them), but let’s hope that we still see some appearances from the dudes that have held him down throughout his career as an independent artist (at least one 3MG song on there, please).

Congrats to Murs- we’re finally seeing a major label deal go to an artist who actually deserves it. And if you haven't ever listened to him and want to check out his music, I suggest you dig up "Murs Rules The World".

  • ^^^^^ Man im a Game fan musically, but saturating the mindset of people with a particular artist is going to make him unpopular quick.

180% Co-Sign on this one Eighty, Murs 'Walk like a Man' is one of the eeriest songs in Hip Hop. Alot of people disagree with me on that one. But there is something in that song that makes it so imaginable, and real.

Yeah i heard Murs got signed a couple of weeks ago. But as for the all star line up, i don't know if Snoop Dogg would be compatible on any of Murs's songs or themes. The Game and Murs would be an interesting mix. Personally id like to here Pigeon John produce some of Murs stuff, man that would be straight nuts. Good looking on all that Murs stuff, thats one Cd i'll be copping this year.

Man Westcoast Hip Hop keeps blowing up and up.

  • I'm glad to hear that about MURS, and at least labels are looking to the West for shit other than "Gangsta Rap" or overly poppy shit either. I hope he can get 9th to collab with him on some tracks.

  • MURS is one of the dopest emcees in rap today. I been a fan of MURS and the living legends for about 5 years now and I'm on the fence about him moving to a major label. On one hand I'm happy he is getting a chance to get is music to the masses, but on the other hand I am in no way waiting to spend my money on a murs album with guest appearances from 3 6 mafia, Rick Ross and even Game and I'm a Game fan! I met Murs at a best buy in Hollywood a couple months ago and he was a cool dude. No ego like those mainstream cats and we had a cool 10 minute conversation about music. I'll support Murs like I support all my other underground artist (go cop Brother Ali's The Undisputed Truth and El-P's I'll Sleep When You're Dead) but I hope it is worth my $15.

  • Murs is pretty sick from the little I've heard from him. I really liked one song I heard from Murray's Revenge, forget what it's called though, so I probably need to check out that album. Also, I hope he doesn't work with a lot of the big name artists, I hate when people work with people just cuz they're hot at the moment. I know its probably better for sales, but I'd rather see artists choose guests who fit in with their own style.

Evidence, is part of "Dilated Peoples" which has been one of the dopest Hip Hop groups in California for over 10 years.
Evidence, is real nice on ther mic,and his new album "The Weatherman" has gotten great reviews from major sources.
Big ups to "D.J. Babu", "Rhettmatic",and all the "Beat Junkies"!!!...

  • Do I even have to comment?? Murs...Murs...Come on man, he's way better than your favorite rapper. Warner Bros knows what's up, they see that gangsta, drug/trap star shit falling. Warner distributes for Rhymesayers now. Warner knows the little bit of money to be made off of rap is gonna be on ex indie/underground dudes. They won't have to market as much, all they have to do is make sure they get the cd's everywhere, and maybe do 1 or 2 videos. I think Murs will do the track with Snoop, cuz Snoop bigged him up in that one song...I forgot the name, and he's in Snoops Hip Hop Gaming league.
I hate to say those when I got mad at 80 for it, but oh well. GO GET BROTHER ALI'S "Undisputed Truth". Best album since.....awhile. Ya'll bastards should click on my name also. We'll not you dumb fucks.

  • Oh yea, and Snoop could do a good song with Murs, cuz Snoop did a good song with GangStarr on their last album. I'm not a big fan of Snoop, but it seems like he steps it up when required. He wasn't that dope on that Nas song, cuz it seemed like Nas stepped his game down on that track.
