For those who don’t already know, there’s gonna be a big album dropping this month. It may not be some seismic event felt throughout the hip hop community like when Snoop or Game or Cube dropped their albums last year, but for heads that check for underground shit, this is one they’ve been waiting for.
With mainstream hip hop in the slumping state that it’s been in recently, a lot of hip hop fans are paying a little more attention to the underground circuit. And for fans of West Coast hip hop, this has almost been a necessity; there only a small handful of Cali rappers currently releasing music on major labels, and those releases come few and far between.
The Bay Area has long been the breeding ground for successful independent artists, and in the last few years the scene has been as healthy as ever. Although the recent shine some Bay Area artists have been getting recently has helped them sell a few more records nationally, most Bay Area artists have been able to live more than comfortably solely by doing relatively big numbers in Cali alone (and sites like friscostreetshow.com).
There have been a lot of disparaging comments made about independent artists by readers of this blog, and I can’t really understand it. It seems like there's a demographic of ignorant 15 year olds that feel like there arent any shitty rappers signed to majors and there aren't any dope rappers signed to indie labels.
Good music is good music, and if you’re only copping albums that have singles getting played on 106th and Park, there’s a whole world of good ass music that you’re missing out on. And besides that, how do you call yourself a hip hop fan if you only go out and buy the albums that well-known artists are dropping? If you listen to West Coast hip hop but you followed that rule in 2006, that means you bought like five albums last year...
I’m gonna let everyone know what album it is that I’m talking about tomorrow, and as usual, the haters will be out in full force- mark my words.
Stay tuned...

Come on man, hurry up & name the album now! I wanna which underground album could be so good. Name it!

I understand that most artists from NorCal have been doin well on the Indie scene. But why haven't we gotten our shine on a national level?
Like, why did Too $hort have to go to ATL and Lil Jon had to hook up with
E-40 on the last album to really get that NATIONAL hook up and national shine?
The Bay Area in Northern California has tremendous untapped talent and we need a XXXXX/Universal or XXXXX/Capitol, XXXXX/Atlantic in the Bay Area to create a lane for our Artists.

Thanks for addressing those issues. There is a whole wide galaxy of great music on the independent scene and I am more than glad that you are providing more insight into those artists. Since there isn't going to be that many west coast major label artists out this year, I'm glad to see more coverage on the independent scene. Stones Throw Records is the Greatest!!! Death to commercial rap music and radio!! I'll sleep when they're dead.

Man if we're going to talk about Cali underground, why are there no damn blogs about Strong Arm Steady? Have you heard that Blacksmith mixtape? Straight fire.
I dont know who you talking bout, but niggas betta check for that clyde carson. I run with a lot of bay niggas and clyde is the hottest new shit period.
WAHT HAPPEN TO BIG RICH I THOUGHT DUDE WAS TIGHT//// IM>>IM>>IM FROM NORTHERN CALI THAT VIDEO WAS TIGHT
truthfully i'm waitin on some stuff from Bishop Lamont. i know he from Carson (not sure if dats part of da Bay)but dude seems to be the most humble, unbiased artist out on da Left Coast and he knows his history regarding this hip-hop shit.
not sure how alot of ya'll out there feel about him but dude is definitely a front runner in da "Next Up" department as far as gettin some more exposure and credibility back to West Coast artists being known for being MC's in da traditional sense of da term, and not gangbangers payin for studio time. i know ya'll got Zion I, Planet Asia and tons of other talented MC's out there but none of them get da nationwide shine ya'll need to get the respect for having talented MC's and not just bangers in da booth.

Im pretty sure Carson is just south of LA not in the bay. Unless theres another Carson.
THE REAL MC'S R IN THA BAYAREA NO GANGBANG HOMO HERE STRICCTLY MONEY GETTING AND BEING PRODUCTIVE!!!
CALI BOY,
Carson is in L.A. right before Long Beach
why dont you cocksuckers visit mapquest to get the TRUE SCOPE of just how fucking vast and massive this los angeles metropolis is.... south central is LA, all the other hoods are in their own (unincorporated) cities.
"how do you call yourself a hip hop fan if you only go out and buy the albums that well-known artists are dropping? If you listen to West Coast hip hop but you followed that rule in 2006, that means you bought like five albums last year..."
thats right on point, i bought cube, game, xzibt,AZ,snoop, nas, busta. im from cali & im a huge fan of east&west rap
Yeah, I'm looking forward to that Messy Marv/Keak Da Sneak/PSD album too.
If I'm right I better get a shout out in the tomorrow's blog.
Bishop Lamont got next dude was ill on Warren G's album. Humble brother too.
I'm looking forward to Crooked I's debut B.O.S.S. (Beginning Of Something Serious) to drop this summer. That dude is on some next level ish as of late. Hit me up if any of y'all want to hear his latest freestyle over "We Fly High" beat. He bodybag's the beat.
I also agree that Bishop Lamont & Clyde Carson are gonna be a problem. They've been dropping heat for the West.
Y'all West Coasters don't forget to support Ras Kass, Planet Asia, G. Malone, Sly Boogy, Chino XL and One-2. Of course there are tons more that I didn't mention here, but y'all get the picture.
There are a lot of East Coast cats that I'm also looking forward to this year as well; Redman, O.C., Papoose, Saigon, Joe Budden, Pharoahe Monch and Kool G Rap, to name a few. I don't have coastal or regional restrictions or prejudices. So long as it bangs and sounds good to me, then it's all good; commercial and underground.
Oh yeah, keep an eye out for Chi-town's lyrical beast, Vakill, to drop some hot ish. He's slated to drop an LP called "Armor Of God" sometime in '07.
PEACE!
