So yesterday’s blog actually surprised me... I figured we’d have some more New York dudes on there hating on the Bay Area because it’s the new cool thing to do. But surprisingly enough, there were a lot of positive responses to the song.
For people who can take the song for what it is, “That Go” is enjoyable as hell. For hip hop purists who take themselves too seriously and jock the fuck out of a mediocre Nas album full of bullshit filler beats just because it’s a Nas album, then the song sucks because Keak doesn’t come with enough crazy metaphors and he doesn’t discuss conflict diamonds or conspiracy theories about 9/11.
Here’s a news flash- HIP HOP DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE SERIOUS. In fact, hip hop started out as party music, and a balance can actually exist. While educational, thoughtful, introspective hip hop is definitely one of the positive aspects of the evolution of the music and culture, it is ok not to take yourself too seriously. If hyphy music (and this song isn’t even on some hyphy shit) is any different than when Humpty released “The Humpty Dance,” than maybe I’m losing my mind. But I’m not seeing too much of a difference, and if I remember correctly, everybody let loose and acted a fool whenever that song used to come on- in fact, a lot of people still do. So what the fuck happened? Has the ego maniacal posing and posturing of hip hop artists and all of their mimicking fanbase really gotten so out of hand that it’s not cool to smile anymore?
What it comes down to is that for all the complaining about how hyphy music (and Bay Area rap in general) is lacking in content or promotes ignorance, how is it any different from rap that incessantly promotes drug dealing misogyny or violence? And how can you complain about a lack of lyricism? I don’t know if anyone’s paying attention anymore, but there’s not a whole lot of fucking lyricists out there anymore. You really think The Game or 50 or Jim Jones or Luda or T.I. could even hold a match to real lyricists like Aceyalone, Big L (RIP), Juju from the Beatnuts, Tash from Tha Alkaholiks or KRS? No, they couldn’t... but who the fuck cares? You think Keak Da Sneak honestly gives a shit whether or not he’s a lyricist?
At any rate, the hater of the week award goes to Mr. Literary Critic here, who ironically left a comment that was chock-full of grammatical errors.

Thats real talk bro. I couldnt agree wit you more. Only thing thats really wrong with the game is, theres no balance any more. People are starting to take everything out of context. Party songs are not supposed to be lyrical, i mean its off the hook if they are but lets be honest if you look back within the history of the game, they arent. They are made to make you vibe and get it poppin in the club wit a fine ass female, you dig? But.....the balance has been takin away, so now we have to dicipher from the same bullshit, whats "party" and whats not because these so called artists are just mimicking each other. Which in turn makes it even easier for these companies to control what "we" as a people want to hear.
I guarantee you they sit up in their big ass offices and have their annual meetings and say, "Well, sales are goin down, so its apparent that the buying public doesnt know what they want, so we're gonna tell them." You dig what im sayin? Thats why all this bullshit is bein pushed into our face and our ears. All of it is not bull but if you are a weak minded person then its hard for you to sperate the monotonous ass shit from the creative and new stuff. Its sad but thats the way it is now. I put half the blame on these artists for not coloring outside the lines and the other half goes to these greedy ass companies.
Thats why Master P ran game you hoes, lol. Im pretty sure after givin him 85% of all profits, they thought he wouldnt even make it in the rap game a year and he flourished for almost 6, 7 years plus. I even got a conspiracy theory on P. When i was younger, i used to just always think maybe hes just a stubborn ass multi-millionaire who always wants his way, no matter what so thats why his organization fell thru. But then as i got older i thought, why would you sacrifice all that money just for vanity and the spotlight??? I know i wouldnt and as i sit back and think today, i can honestly say i know Master P probably wouldnt. I mean i understand all the side hustles but to just completely cut the music off? The one thing that brought you into all this money? Just doesnt sound right to me. There was no signs off No Limit stopping until he stopped. I guarantee you No Limit would still be goin Gold and Platinum right now if he would have kept puttin out albums, Ill put money on it but he didnt.

I'm from the Bay originally and currently live on the east coast, so for 10 years now I've gotten that "hate" on what music comes from the Bay, but in the same token-certain songs that are being promoted either are AVERAGE or don't properly promote the skills of some of the artists there.
That said, I've never been a big fan of Keak da Sneak since the 3x Krazy days, but I respect his originality and his hustle. The beat is HOT... and the hook is decent. (now that Doey Rock shit I"m feelin even if the track is old now)
It's about your taste though...you're saying the Nas album was basically overrated but your giving a "good" song all this respect.
You said the Jay Z album was weak as I recall too.
My question is are you more excited that ol boy Keak pulled of a decent song by an okay lyricist, or disappointed that a more superior lyricist made an album that didn't grab you?
...I ask this becasue a lot of folks say Jay's album is trash but give a wack nigga a higher grade because he exceeded expectations.

I think people my age (Im 23) and older need to realize Jay-Z is not makin music for the young kids anymore. At least thats how im feeling. I think hes trying to usher in a new cross breed of music. Im pretty sure he would be estatic if kids would be able to grasp what he is talkin about but he didnt do it for them. So really its the young cats talkin like that. The people that most music is geared towards now a days.

texas_swang...I think it's that (age factoring) but some people are also stuck on what Jay did before (reasonable doubt, blueprint, hard knock life, etc.)
A lot of these older artists are having a hard time and feel the need to go back to talk about selling that hard shit just to get people to listen. Even Snoop found himself going back to Doggystyle because his fans miss that crippin on wax.
For some of the more talented artists, if you make a classic, people will always compare that to whatever you put out. Personally I felt like Kingdom Come was a solid album, but niggas just want Blueprint again, while a nigga like say a Rick Ross gets a more complimentary rating from critics.
Its definitely a curve people are grading on.

The problem is that the serious stuff, or music with messages do not receive enough airplay. The business is slanted, and that's why the purists are crying foul. It may not be articulated properly, but that's the major beef. I understand there are two sides to hip-hop, but both have to be shown in order for them to be relevant. Do I think some people take it too far? Of course. Are they completely wrong? No. If they don't scream about it, people will stop paying attention, and you won't have anymore "Real" records, we'll all fall into the abyss of redundant club bangers. I'm not knocking the fun stuff, but too much of anything is bad for you. And right now, this business is out of balance.

yeah that Nas CD was ok it was worth listening to but i cant see myself playing on the regular, i'm lucky i didn't pay for it, it's in the pile of CD's that are scratched up, true he has lyrics but none of the songs caught my attention, Nas has been out a long time and there's no point of him having an album that you have to listen to a few times to appreciate. His album was like one of those movies that you watch and loose intrest after the first 10 minutes and end up talking or daydreaming through the whole movie until something happens that catches your attention... If a southern artist can make a song that will catch my attention as soon as the beat drops i will listen to it, no matter if it's lyrical or not... when i get up and get in my car on my way to work i dont want to hear no boring music full of lyrics sounding depressing and sh1t i put in that Jeezy to help me get motivated, or something with a banging beat maybe even some of that hyphy... a ni99a dont need none of that caffene free music early in the morning...i also dont like Dipset i've never bought one of their albums and probably never will b/c I listen to their music and cant understand what they are trying to say, but i got to admitt, that we fly high was my joint, i didnt even pay attention to the verse the beat was sick and who didn't go nuts when he said BALLLIN' that song wont make me buy his album but that was a good song to put out as a single...also the west coast isn't comming back b/c they never went nowhere, 2pac just died...

You think I'm caught in the past? Wrong... the past has given me a taste for excellent music. That first Jeezy was excellent. That last Common was excellent. The Blue Carpet wasn't quite excellent, but I did catch myself throwing up my old hood on my way to the office. E-40 needs to step up to that "in A Major Way" level to get props from me.
