So besides the letter from Boots Riley, there was another letter that showed up in my email on Friday. Tis’ the season...
This one’s from weird-ass Shock G, aka Humpty Hump; I have absolutely no idea what prompted this letter, but it’s oddly entertaining and has a couple interesting points in it (along with some painfully obvious ones) so I thought I’d reprint it for you all to read. It’s in the exact form in which I recieved it, so any spelling or grammatical errors (such as the ever-so-popular replacement of “you” with “u”) can be credited to Shock, and not to me. Just thought I should throw that out there before the haters get going...
Oh, and if anyone wants to know the fictional back story that was made up for Shock’s Humpty Hump character and why he wore the whole fake nose/glasses ensemble, holler at the SOHH Left myspace page (at www.myspace.com/sohhleftcoast) and I’ll fill you in. I knew reading that Yo! MTV Raps book in junior high would come in handy one day...
So here it is, in all of its... um, glory...
"U Can't Handle the Truth!"
(Shattering the Myths) by shockg
MYTH 1: GOOD CHRISTIANS & CATHOLICS DON'T DO MARIJUANA;
RECREATIONALLY SMOKING WEED & DOING MUSHROOMS IS A SIN
Really?
By being happy & enjoying the world you best honor god. Respect
Jesus by honoring the natural stimulants put here by his parents,
..Jah/Allah/God/Mother Nature/The All Mighty, whatever u like to call
him/her/them.
If doing Gods natural drugs is a sin, can u imagine the magnitude
of evil it must be to do an advil?
Ha ha ha, can't argue that!

MYTH 2: TUPAC STARTED OUT AS A DANCER AND EVOLVED INTO A RAPPER
Please.
Pac was just touring with us (digital underground) to kill time while
we shopped his demo and helped him finish his album. Money-B's brother
Cullen, our original Humpty-dancer, stayed home to make room for Pac,
so Pac filled in and did the dance. Yes, you could say he did this as
part of his "job" but he did it mostly for fun. Everyone in our
8-person crew wanted to do the dance, it pulled the chicks after the
show each night.
We signed Tupac Shakur to our indy label TNT records as an emcee
and began working on his album in 1989. He began touring with d.u. a
year later, after being bored & frustrated with waiting for us to
return from tour to continue working on his project. And we were
constantly shopping him the entire time, many companies passed before
Interscope finally agreed to distribute him.
His "I was Shocks roadie" comment from "Resurrection" also makes my
blood boil; as if the nigga carried my personal bags. He never did.
Everyone carried their own suitcases. Unloading & loading the stage
equipment was the tour responsibility he speaks of, a "right of
passage" to every d.u. member. We all did it for a tour or 2,
including myself & Money-B on the first tours, and later it was how we
initiated new blood. So did DJ Fuze, Saafir, DJ-JZ, Pee Wee, and every
other d.u. member except the females. (they cleaned the bus & did the
laundry; perhaps chauvinist but true)
To say that Tupac "originally started as a dancer", as many
people & publications often do, not only insults his true title &
essence at that time, (emcee, public activist, & social critic) but it
also insults digital undergrounds awareness & recognition of who he
really was at the time. Worst of all, it promotes that it's uncool to
dance, and that no self respecting revolutionary, "thug", or "gangsta"
would be caught dancing; as if Pac graduated outta dancing into a
stronger male. Nope, sorry, he was already the strong male
revolutionary, with 2Pacalyspe Now recorded, BEFORE he danced with
d.u.
Therefore, Tupac deserves even more credit for being all of the above
and still remaining humble enough to contribute to d.u. as a dancer &
roadie. It was his choice to do this, not an ultimatum, as his solo
album was already being shopped, and as we were already committed to
his project.
He also can be seen playing congas & doing background vocals onstage
w/d.u. on televised Yo MTV Raps Live, and Showtime at the Apollo
tapings, well after the movie Juice and his solo album was out. This
is documented fact, do the research, and then do the math.

MYTH 3: DJ DARRYL PRODUCED I GET AROUND; SHOCK-G PRODUCED TEMPTATIONS.
Nope, Easy-Mo Bee produced Temptations, I just happened to be in the
video.
Billboard magazine mistakenly listed I Get Around as produced by DJ
Darryl the whole summer it was on the charts. Just for the record,
here are the songs I produced for Tupac in the order we recorded them:
89 thru 95:
Rebel of the Underground
Revenge of tha Lunatic
Words of Wisdom
Do For Love (acoustic piano + Pac rimin; never officially released)
It Ain't Necessarily So (unreleased)
I Get Around
Still Down (original version, unreleased)
So Many Tears
Fuck the World
after sept 96 remixes:
produced w/Numskull of the Luniz:
Resist the Temptation (unreleased)
Po Nigga Blues
Changes (unreleased)
produced w/Richie Stites & D-Rizzo:
And 2morrow (Havenotz remix, unreleased)

MYTH 4: ONLY SELLOUTS DATE BEYOND THEIR RACE
Lenny Kravitz, 50 Cent, David Bowie & Iman, Heidi Klum & Seal, Tiger
Woods parents, my own parents (daddy Shock & momma Humpty), Dennis
Rodman/Carmen Electra, Sean Combs/Jennifer Lopez/Ben Affleck, Hugh
Grant/Divine Brown, Woopie Goldberg, Ted Dansen, and Madonna aren't
the only people who enjoy inter-racial relationships. A couple of less
known others are:
> Robert Deniro (African American wife & daughter)
> Clint Eastwood (African American wife)
> Tupac Shakur (several European American a.k.a. "white" girlfriends;
before/during/and after digital underground)
The importance of not hiding these truths is that concealing them
perpetuates racial divides. Many fans & other people with
impressionable minds view Clint Eastwood as a traditionally "white"
western hero; Deniro as the tuff New York City Italian purest, and
Tupac as a strict "black" revolutionary; all of whom would never date
beyond their own race, a public image which contributes to negative
stereotypes and further alienates the races.
Promote harmony within the mighty & beautiful HUMAN race, and
forever let the truth be known: people are people.
People often joke about successful African American men "selling
out" or "betraying their race" by enjoying the company of a woman of
European or Asian descent, but seldom do we acknowledge the fact that
interracial experimentation seems to be a pastime of successful people
in general.
Perhaps outstanding accomplishments & financial success grants one
the confidence, the freedom, the privacy, or the courage, to follow
ones heart and explore the world more freely? ..without the usual
trappings & scorn from the many unhappy crabs in a barrel who lack the
courage or resources to follow their own hearts?
Okay, what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas, but while
we're on the subject, let's review another interesting fact:
If you interview a "black" working girl at any of the brothels &
escort agencies of Nevada, you will find that the majority of their
customers are married "white" male conservatives by day, but chocolate
nookie lovers by night.
Hee hee, and it's the same with all the other "colors" too.
("Hey, I'm married to an apple, but I wanna see what an orange feels
like!")
So don't single out Dennis Rodman or Hugh Grant, "playaz gonna play
wit who dey wanna play wit".
Thank you.

Great blog homeboy!!! I'm lovin it....and I'm diggin Shock's whole mindstate. He is on point.
I dont' know if you was tryin to get me on this blog, but I'm gonna speak on my point of view regarding myth 1. And this is on my own personal conviction, and I encourage each one to seek the Lord Jesus Christ on this topic and not depend on another man's convictions.
Me, I do not believe that the Lord feels that smoking weed is a sin, simply because weed is being smoked.
Now...don't get it twisted. I'm not saying that He condones it, and should my response get alot of feed back, I will quote specific scripture for reference. I want to just lay it out in simple terms below.
The reason smoking weed is a sin is because it is illegal. Now, anytime a law directly goes against commandments of the Lord, then it is lawful to follow God first. However, I can not think of any laws that are directly against the Law of the Lord so I can not quote any instances.
Now the reason smoking weed is a sin is simply because the law says so. We are to obey the law of the land. The bible says in many places..what is done in the dark will come into the light and will be exposes. Therefore, you having to sneak around and smoke, having to hide it from your family and children, and having to lie to cover it up...that in itself makes it wrong before the Lord.
Gluttony is also a sin, so abusing anything is not permitted and is a sin before the Lord.
The bible also speaks of anything that you do which leads another brother into an action that they have been convicted by the Lord not to do, then you yourself or sinning.
Now, with that said...let's say that you have a fellow Christian who stopped smoking weed because it was a problem for him personally, because he was not able to control himself and smoked too much..and abused it. But you yourself do not have that problem, and you are a responsible smoker..therefore it is not a sin for you because you are not abusing it, and you have not allowed it to come between you and God by placing it in higher priority. So then you share your feelings about smoking with that brother for whom it is a problem, and in doing so you lead him back into that problem place that he was tryin to escape...then YOU have sinned. Because you have led that man into sin.
So here are my convictions on this topic, and I am a former smoker:
1. Smoking weed is sin because it is illegal. Smoking it and the benefits is has doe not over ride the law of the land, and is not "more pleasing" to God than obeying the law and not smoking. Therefore it is sin.
2. In places it is not illegal, if you smoke to become "stoned" or highly intoxicated then it is a sin. That's "gluttony", and also...the bible tells us to always be of sound mind in order that we are able to fight off the enemy during his attacks. He attacks strong during our times of weakness...and being absoluetly faded is that time. I believe as with any medicine, it has it's proper place and should not be abused. Just like taking pain medication is not a sin so long as you do not abuse it. Big difference, pain medicine is legal when prescribed.
3. Allowing anything to take priority over your relationship with God is a sin. God is a jealous God...and in allowing weed to be more important to you than doing what is required to please the Lord...then you are sinning.
4. Leading another into something that is wrong for them is sin.
So..you can see that my beliefs are based on biblical research. Let me know if any questions, or if you have any argument against what I've said above. I'm not here to prove right and wrong, just to lay what I believe to be the truth as revealed to me, in hopes that someone else may be blessed by it.
Christ Bless!
PZ

YEESSSSS!!! I love to hear people speak truth! We all humans, and we need to work together to stomp out racism. Those beliefs only serve to keep it alive.

I still sorta disagree with shock G, if we can't find happiness amongst our own people how are we gonna find it with people outside our race. Does the acquisition of money equate to finding happiness, does being successful make it ok do date someone outside your race,i just wonder. And another thing 2pac wasn't really about all that thug life shit till after ve got shot up.
does being successful make it ok do date someone outside your race,
Posted by: slit knux at December 12, 2006 12:55 PM
------------------------------
That is not the real question, the real question is
"What makes it WRONG to date outside of your race?"
When you answer that, think about your answer...and then ask yourself what it is your answer based on?
Then look at that answer and ask yourself, Has this belief been beneficial in the past, or present to "people"..or even ask yourself "has this mindstate actually benefited my race".
You're gonna see that the attitude of division has NEVER been beneficial to ANYONE, it has provided NO answers to ANY problems...and is the opposite direction that you need to be heading in order to "find happiness" between "your own people" and people in general.

What's goin on?? Thanks for askin fam.
First let me start by sayin...it doesn't matter what I think.
Second let me say that I dont' think, I KNOW...that Jesus Christ died for homosexuals, just the same that He died for me and heterosexuals. Jesus hates the sin, not the sinner.
Third, sexual sin is one of the strongest sins that there is and one of the most mentioned types of sins quoted in the bible.
So...bottom line, God loves gays and lesbians, and wants to free them from that bindage that homosexuality has on their lives. The problem with this, is that too many homos think that it is "normal" to be that way, when in fact...simple nature indicates other wise. There is no creature in existence that can procreate under homosexual relationships. It doesn't happen.
The very first instruction given to man was in Genesis 1:28. God said "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." That is impossible in homosexuality.
Now, just because it may feel natural for some people, that does not mean that it is permissable. Everything is "allowed" (we have free will), not everything is "permissable" (permited according to the Lord).
I am no less of a sinner than a homosexual, that's just fact and the nature of our humanity. And just in the same way I could not stop my player ways on my own, homosexuals should not think that they can stop on their own.
People must accept God's truth for what it is...and stop bucking it because it goes up against how they feel, or what they want. That does not change the fact that it is the Truth.
When you turn your life over to Christ and are born again, you are a new creature. You are no longer defined by what you do...but you are then defined by who you are...and that is a a CHILD OF GOD!
Make sense? Holla back!
Christ bless!

You know what brotha...I preciate that. I'm just thankful that what was typed touched somethin in you fam...real talk.
Man, I been gettin at these folks for a minute, and check this. I ain't even tryin to preach homey, I'm just speakin when the opportunity came up.
But the truth of the matter is, Christian Hip Hop is not a joke bruh. It's comin, and it's comin real real fast homey. I been tryin to get at these folks for the longest, and let them know...it'd be smart to get ahead of the ball game and not be tryin to play catchup later.
I'm networked with artists nationwide too...that would blow folks minds with they music, for real. Christian Hip Hop is the FASTEST GROWING genre of music, PERIOD. As a matter of fact, since this is the Left Coast blog, I want you to click my link and check out 2Five the Hood Rev. This cat is with the same movement as Kurtis Blow. You listen to him, and then YOU tell me what YOU think. This ain't no joke.
And see...the whole reason I said SOHH "Spiritual" is to give whatever other beliefs to represent their beliefs and how they are reflected in hip hop. See..Christian Hip Hop is not just music, these cats are actually out there feedin the poor, spendin time with the sick, given back to the community.
I'm tired of the current state of hip hop. Anyone that tries to deny it's current state is in denial and is being irresponsibile. The truth stands on it's own, when you tryin to find reasons to dispute truth and point out how it is still alive...that is evidence in itself as to the fact that if it is not dead..it is dying. Like I said, truth is truth...and THAT is what I stand for.
Christ Bless you homey. Thanks for the feed back. Get at SOHH.COM...let em know what's up.
Also...Allhiphop.com is already recognizing real. I've been gettin at them, and they are compiling information as we speak. Look for more, SOHH betta get with it.
Get at me!
Personally...this is WHY I do what I do.
1 Timothy 1:15-17
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

@ PZ
I agree with your convictions 2-5, I’m not sure about #1
Now, I understand what you mean when you speak of gluttony, and yes I agree that if weed or anything else is abused to the point to where you’re doing ill things to get your hands on it, it’s a sin, but so is a little white lie; no sin is greater than the other right?
I don’t think smokin’ weed is a sin because it’s illegal (The law of the land)… hell, I believe it’s only illegal because our government can’t tax it (Keep close tabs on it); yet! We all know that alcohol does more damage than weed ever has, yet it’s not illegal; and as much sin as alcohol brings forth, is it okay (Not a sin) to drink it because the law of the land permits it? I guess that would bring us back to gluttony though. Its okay until there’s an overabundance that derails a natural course huh? So all my 4/20 folks, as long as you have your act together, and never put weed over Christ; you’re good! Weed being illegal is a man made law, and man has been known to be wrong A LOT
Good lookin’ PZ, very thought provoking. I’m not extremely religious, but I do believe that Christ is the Savior and that he died for our sins.
Shock G spit some serious game there.
Is it 4:20 yet?
Wow ... well done Eighty ... this guy speaks of rationality ... something particularly rare in the realm of modern day hip hop
hell, I believe it’s only illegal because our government can’t tax it (Keep close tabs on it); yet! We all know that alcohol does more damage than weed ever has, yet it’s not illegal; and as much sin as alcohol brings forth, is it okay (Not a sin)
Posted by: K dubb at December 12, 2006 06:08 PM
----------------------------
Dog..I feel ya 100% on the example you use with alcohol and I would not doubt if it was a government coverup for it being illegal. I'll also say that I personally believe if weed was legal, there would be a decline in D.U.I. and alcohol related deaths due to drunk driving.
Here is a repost as to why I believe it is a sin simply because it is illegal:
"The bible says in many places..what is done in the dark will come into the light and will be exposes. Therefore, you having to sneak around and smoke, having to hide it from your family and children, and having to lie to cover it up...that in itself makes it wrong before the Lord"
Trust me bro, even after I got back on with Christ full force, I was still smoking. And I found myself having "ride dirty" to get it, lie to my kids when they asked why my eyes were so red, or sneaking out back to smoke it while I made them stay inside. That's when the Lord convicted on me that I am at all times supposed to be able to stand up straight and represent Christ at all times, in all things...and to lean on him at all times. And having to lie, hide and be sneaky is not how any "mirror of Christ" would act. These two verse below hit it right on, there are many more in the Word that speak on it...but these two hit home for me. I couldn't come up with any other reason to continue smoking, and these two nailed everything as to why it is not pleasing to the Lord and why I as a believer sincerely tryin to please Him in all I do should not smoke weed.
"Ephesians 5:8
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light."
"Ephesians 5:10-12
11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret."

I’m diggin’ your spirituality; I respect anyone who has love for the Lord like you apparently do.
Let me make it perfectly clear that I’m not a spokesperson for weed. I mean, I don’t look at anyone sideways for smokin’ herb, but I also wouldn’t tell anyone “You gotta try this man”.
Here’s an example of the point I was trying to make.
I have a family, a wife and 4 kids (All girls) and uhhh, lets just say that if I did smoke (?) and those in my family old enough to know (Wife and teens), knew I smoked weed, no sneakin’, no lyin’ just “I’m goin’ outside”. Is it still a sin to smoke weed simply because it’s “The law of the land”?
PZ, I promise I’m not tryin’ to argue, I’m just tryin’ to get a better understanding.

Yo, I apologize for just gettin over to check up on this blog..I hope you get this.
As parents it should be our goal to teach by the steps we take and to live as an example to our children. By the example you mentioned, you are teacing by example that there are cases that it is permissable to break the law.
We must be walking the walk we want to see them walk and we can't pick and choose on what things we agree and those that we don't, no matter how much we hate to let it go, or how big of a sacrifice we must make.
If the law directly conflicts with God's law, then it is right to follow God's law first. I can't think of a law that does conflict with any of God's commands or directions.
If the law does not conflict with God's law, then we are COMMANDED to submit to that authority.
And also, if you use the "God made it argument" when explaining this to your kids...you are throwing the name of God into an argument that He don't want no part of and one which He does not side with you. Therefore you would be using His name in vain. By that, I mean that you are using His name to justify breaking the law, and encouraging one to break the law is completely against God's character.
The benefit of following the law and pleasing God greatly outweighs any benefit you will get by puffin trees.
I believe that if we continue smoking, and we were to pass...and when it came time to answer for every deed, there is no way that our smoking would be viewed as a good deed before the Lord and earn a blessing. If He asked us "Why did you smoke when you knew it was illegal?" the only answer we would be able to provide would be one indicating that it was out of pure selfishness. See what I'm saying?
Another way to think about it...if you have to go out of your way to justify something, or state your case on why you feel that it is permissable...you can most of the time accept that what it is you are strugglin to justify or explain is not right to be doing. Because with the truth, there is no grey areas...it stands on it's own.
So when you are having to be sneaky (and even if your family knows, they can't talk about it and have to remain silent on you smoking..and also..you can't smoke in front of the cop station) then it's not right. We can't justify it.
Plus...The Word says so:
"Romans 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you."
"Hebrews 13:16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 17Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you."
"1 Peter 2:12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right."
Also remember, even though back in Jesus's time the poor people were taxed like crazy by the leaders..Jesus still commanded them to pay the taxes because it was the law.
I pray you make it back to read this. God Bless you homey...put the blunt down. ha!! Let me know if you got any questions.
Christ Bless!
