Best of '06: My Top Ten Hip Hop Albums of the Year

Posted on December 26, 2006 3:10 AM

dilla.jpg
I have to say it one last time before the year is through... RIP J DILLA.

Hopefully everyone had a good holiday weekend, and hopefully all of you got whatever it was you wanted and got to spend some quality time with the fam-a-lam. Since we have one short-ass week left in 2006, we got some quick biz-nass to take care of to wrap up this year.

We’re going to get today cracking with my list for the top ten hip hop albums of 2006. This will be followed up in tomorrow’s blog by my list for the top ten West Coast hip hop albums for they year, so if you don’t see something in today’s list, don’t get your panties in a bunch. As a matter fact, these lists are just a reflection of my taste and not anyone else’s, so it doesn’t really matter what you think should or shouldn’t be on my list.

If the comments section ends up working again at any point today, feel free to post your top ten lists as well; I’m interested in seeing what they look like.

Here they are, in no particular order: (edit: for some inexplicable reason, I thought I already had the Clipse album down and forgot to get it in there, so the Gnarls Barkley album had to go)

E-40 - My Ghetto Report Card

Snoop Dogg - Tha Blue Carpet Treatment

Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor

J Dilla - Donuts

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

Young Jeezy - The Inspiration

Oh No - Exodus Into Unheard Rythms

Ghostface - Fishscale

Mobb Deep - Blood Money

The Jacka, AP 9 and Husalah - Mob Trial

Want to know what my fellow SOHH staffers had on their lists? Then check out SOHH's Top 10 Hip-Hop/R&B Albums Of '06 list here.

Oh Honarable mention in my post goes to The Clipse if they talked about something other that Yayo they could have made it in my top 10. Hip Hop Is Dead is the most complete album I have heard in a long long time (EX: Blueprint, Illmatic, Only Built for Cuban Linx,The Chronic classics!!!)

  • To place an album in a top 10, it would be better if you give a good quote or a song that is that stong.
No hate on Game, but his album does not contain any good quotes or any good verses. Dre, 50, west coast, chronic, low rider, 64 impala(you know the rest). Tell me Luda, Snoop, TI, Mobb Deep, and listen to their albums. Check how many good quotes.

  • I was gonna put the Carter 2 on my list but it came out in late '05 but if it had been released in '06 it would have been at my #2 right behind Hip Hop Is Dead. That NaS album is just pure fire. Great Lyrics, Creatvity, Hot Collabos, Hot Beats. It does not sound like anything else that is out right now This is the Album of the year by far. As far as the Carter 2 That is gonna be a hard Album to follow up b/c that joint was a classic and I dont use that term very often.

  • E-40 album is pure fire....hands down. Straight classic in my opinion. Ya'll talk about who is underated and what not. 40 wata is that dude, square business. I have found no flaws in that album from the beats to the lyrics to even the guest spots. (and these are dudes i have never even heard of) 40 spits real shit and still finds ways to sound original and fresh everytime out the door. So Ya'll stop hatin and give props where its due........and why in the world hasnt anybody mentioned Cube either? His shit was fire too.

Honerable mention for "The Doctors Advocate". Im "still" in shock as to how good that album actually is and i dont even really vibe wit Game like that.

As far as Texas releases, ya'll are sleepin on Trae, I promise. His album is a fuckin CLASSIC, period. Z-Ro's joint is the exact same. Once ya'll get tired of all that dancing and cocaine talk, ya'll will start runnin to Texas to hear some real shit, i have no doubt in my mind. Its just sad that the REAL has been overlooked for so long.

Fuck people talkin about how hip-hop is dead and all that non-sense. I give Luda his props for his shirt that said "Hip-Hop isnt dead, It lives in the south". Thats all good but he should have said it lives in Texas, cause our artists are "puttin it down" here. I dont know what the fuck everybody else is doin.

  • Stop shitting on that man's list. It's his. Maybe a lot of you are important at home or in your own circle but this is his, stop hating and make your list.

    1. Nas, best hands down. For my personal record, the best to ever pick up a mic.
    2. Jay Z, for grown ups. Some of his wordplay is brilliant.
    3. Ice Cube, also for grown up g's. I'm partial to Cube.
    4. Busta, excellent production and grown up shit. One of the best albums I've ever heard.
    5. Lupe, the ink of a scholar is mightier than the blood of a martyr. Hottest line all year.
    6. Game, that remix will be hot forever if only for Ja's ending verse. "Niggas we all bleed......"
    7. Em, hot. Even 50 and Banks snapped on this one.
    8. Weezy and Birdman. 1 single made this whole album
    9. Roots, Black Thought is the truth on the mic.
    10. DJ Clue, this nigga never stops making hot collabos.

I have Clinton Sparks latest on heavy rotation. I can't get past that D Block track "Takes everything you got".

Hate if you want to, just stop bootlegging and buy these niggas joints.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

How are you incredulous that I left those off the list? Do you really think that you have that good of a grasp on my musical tastes?

I didn't just pick albums based on lyrical content or anything; if I did that, than the Nas album would definitely be on there. But the 40 and Jeezy album were solid as far as style and production; You can't tell me that Jeezy sounds wrong on any of those beats. As far as Blood Money goes, it obviously wasn't the best Mobb Deep album, but I thought it was solid, and "Pearly Gates" was a fucking sick track (although it was even better before it got edited). But I may be a little more forgiving than some other heads, being that I've always been a big Mobb fan.

I just copped the Nas album on Saturday, and there are a couple good tracks, but I've only listened to it once and I wasn't really blown away by it. I didn't put it on there because the verdist's still out, but there's definitely a possibility that I'll warm up to it. As far as the Doctor's Advocate, it just plain wasn't one of my top ten for the year. Check tomorrow's list though...

    That answer your questions?

  • Yo!!! Lets be real!!! Dip-Set is trash this is not to hip-hop. All those ni@@az talk about is gangbanging, gangbanging, and more gangbanging. Y'all need to listen to some knowledge!!! Pick up a Rakim, Nas, Pac, or K.R.S 1 cd. Yo!!! you people that think dip-set is hot must like nursey rap cause that what it is. Nas spit 16 bars to end the career of those dip-set ni@@az; where as those dip-set ni@@az will probably be in their rockin chairs at like 75-80 years old trying to figure out how to take out Nas. In simpler terms Nas is light-years ahead of ni@@az like Corny-Cam and Dip-set, some of y'all ni@@az should be ashamed of yourself for even mentioning Dip-Set in the Same breath as Nas; Or for that matter rate a dip-set album ahead of nas'. Dip-set just make music to make money they don't care if the lyrical content is hot or not they just trying to make a little money. Hip-Hop is an art form that require you to put your heart and sole into your music. Yo!!! word up they hip-hop should set-up a committe of the all-time great-pioneers of like Nas, Jay, Rakim, and K.R.S One to name a few to rate albums to see if they are worthy of release to prevent B.S Hip-Hop Albums from being released like those mad by Corny-Cam and Dip-Set. Holla Back.(Didn't do spell check to many words.)
