The Blue Carpet Treatment drops; Snoop's Discography

Today Snoop Dogg’s Blue Carpet Treatment drops, and it’s one of his most anticipated releases in quite some time. While a lot of hip hop fans looked forward to Paid Tha Cost to be Da Bo$$ as the album that would return him to the forefront of West Coast rap, just as many Snoop fans are looking forward to Blue Carpet as the second peak of his career since Doggystyle.

This is Snoop’s ninth album, and other than 2000’sDead Man Walking , every single one of his albums has at least gone platinum. (The aforementioned album had only sold 220,000 as of 2005, which is likely due to the fact that Snoop very publicly criticized and, made it known that noone should purchase it or support Death Row in any way.) The sales of hip hop albums have been continuously waning in recent years- largely due to piracy, and fickle consumers who have grown weary of artists dropping half-assed albums -and yet it’s a safe bet that Blue Carpet will sell a million albums effortlessly.

Although Snoop’s discography is fairly solid, the No Limit years were a little sketchy. They did yield a few hits (“Snoop Dogg,” one of his first collaborations with Timbaland, and “Bitch Please”), but overall, the albums released between ‘98 and 2000 weren’t really his best. And while the younger generation of hip hop may have had the good fortune of missing the No Limit era of Snoop’s career, I can remember going out to buy Da Game Is To Be Sold Not To Be Told and being a bit disappointed. No Limit Top Dogg and The Last Meal were also some of Snoop’s weaker albums, and still, they weren’t really all that bad.

Overall, our boy Snoop’s had a good run. In celebration of his latest release let’s take a second to look at his discography:

  • The Doggfather was by FAR his worst album. I disagree with what you said about his No Limit years. While they were a little more southern in style, No Limit is what kept his career afloat, and The Last Meal was the album that Snoop relevant again. Until then, he had faded into a B-List rapper.

I do look forward to coppin Blue Carpet Treatment though.

  • My review on both albums n hip-hop in general:

I copped both albums on Saturday morning and listened to both right through. I got much love for both artists as I still remember getting kicked out of a Holiday Inn when we first played '22 2s'. I still remember getting a bootleg tape of Doggystyle which I had 2 bump in my walkman cause in the early 90's police considered hip hop listeners as suspects for whateva. Some shit ain't changed, but the hip hop has.

Coming back to both these artists...I first listened to Jigga's album which I was hyped about, though I personally felt dat if Nas dropped first it would've been a bigger blow. However, though I was impressed, I somehow didnt feel that same fire as I heard in previous Jigga albums. Don't get me wrong, the album is good, very good if you must, but it doesn't reflect for me some of the Jigga aspects. Instead, it shows a much more mature artist. If you listen to Reasonable Doubt and then everything inbetween, you can see how he has grown, but Kingdom Come for me didn't show an album which I can expect further growth from. More like of an album that says 'I have done it. Though I have made millions from hip hop and other business ventures, this album says I have done it. I have accomplished everything I wanted to do in my life to show the critics and lovers alike what I have done'.
It takes a much more mature listener to understand where he is coming from. I didn't think the beats were as up to par as The Black Album, and considering there are hardly any features from hip-hop artists but mainly R&B artists can be looked @ it from to sides. Positive: Jay done hip-hop now try a different challenge. Negative: Jay supposed to be a king but with no subjects? Ne-yo, Beyonce, Usher, Pharell, 2 other nobody's n Chris Martin.
I don't know how the Jay-Z fans are gonna react. They'll most likely love it cause it's Hov, but I just feel that to bow out on an album like The Black Album, I would've thought a king of hip-hop would made a more powerful entrance. A bit like how Dre did when he dropped 2001 summin summin years after The Chronic. I would've loved to have seen other Def Jam rappers or even whoever is left on the Roc to take part. Lyrically Hov still got it for me on tracks like Minority Report, Oh My God, Kingdom Come. Even though he lyrically strong on others i feel the beats let him down. Or even if da beat was phat, the new attitude of 'accomplishment' might have done it. I don't know. Like I said, mature listeners might like it more. I played it to a producer I know who is in his 30's and he loved it cause he could relate to some of the samples. Oh n speaking of Dr. Dre, he produced, Lost Ones, 30 Something, Trouble and Minority Report he mixed the whole album for Hov, check the credits on every track. Nevertheless, this is a very good album and you will be stupid to not give it a look and believe after the 2nd time listening some of the songs I passed on the first time, started to grow on me (don't get it twisted, 'Hollywood' wid B, is just plain awful and I jus can't get into 'Show Me What You Got'). This is an album that reflects Hov's personal growth and maturity as well as his fans from back in the day. An artist that has grown with his fans. Almost waiting in hope that the same kids that were hungrey for success when Reasonable Doubt came out have grown to be successful by the time Kingdom Come came out, just like Jigga.

Now onto Snoop. I feel he followed the same format as R&G. Those who loved dat album, will love dis while those who hated it might take a 2nd look here. There are quite a few bangers (Candy, Gangbangin 101, LAX, Bitch I Knew, Don't Stop), fillers (10 Lil Crips, I Wanna Fuck You, Pssst!) n a couple of lame ones (i thought Crazy with Nate Dogg could've been done better), but it was as I neared the end of the album that I made this album a classic in my mind. 1 track stood head n shoulders above every thing else. It is for this 1 song that I would probably say this album is better than anything I have heard this year (e.g. Meth, Banks, Ghostface, Game, Jay-Z...anyone).
The track I'm referring to is Imagine with Dr.Dre and D'Angelo. From the second I heard the piano keys I knew it would be an immortal track. Then u hear Dre raspy on the beat, then the violins and then your mind is blown. Then I heard the Dre lyric:

'Imagine Biggie wid his son/ Imagine Pac getting called 'Pop' by one/ Imagine a mother struggling/ dealing with a system that don't give a fuck who shot her son.'

...n I almost damn near cried cause I think that is summin every true hip-hop fan has wondered since 1996/1997. Whenever u hear a great mentioned in hip-hop nowadays, u hear a comparison or some dillusion of grandure that if dey were alive dey would be riding with that particular artist or whateva. That was the truest, heart-felt lyric I have heard all year. It is for just those simple words, that one thought that I put Blue Carpet Treatment above any album I liked this year. I don't think there will be an album released this year that would have a song on it with a lyric like that. What made me proud is that, you hear all these artists screaming their the king of this n that BUT THE GREATEST LYRIC ON A SONG THIS YEAR WAS FROM A SONG THAT WAS DONE BY THE TWO MOST INFLUENTIAL HIP HOP STARS OF THE WEST COAST. It wouldn't have mattered if it was from a southern or east coast artisit but I mention this because there has been alot of debate as to who is King of the West recently (just like who is the King of NY) but you can define a king by their actions and Snoop & Dre showed why they don't need to scream it. Real recognise real.

In the end, there have been alot of album's this year that have been amazing but slept on (e.g. Rotten Apple, 4:21, The Format etc.) n this is the reason why people say 'hip hop is dead', because we, the fans, are killing it by our stupid allgiance to just one particular artist. Even though I don't like Mariah his album, Doctor's Advocate (sorry I couldn't resist!) had some good beats and though I may not like The Game or his lyrics, I can't take away credit from the guy who has worked hard on summin and achieved what he has. If I stay loyal to what a few artists say, I would miss the beauty of hip hop and all her faces. Death is an eternal sleep, so if we the fans sleep on albums just because of our loyalty to other artists or regions, then we give little life to the one thing which is our lives. Just a thought. No more hate. Peace.

  • @ NYSFINEST

When I said for Hov to make a better entrance, I wasn't referring to publicity, I was referring to the power of the artists on his album and the album itself. Hov can get that type of publicity on football commercials etc. because he appeals to both white and black America. He is an icon in that sense. But you could still have all these people and all that publicity AND still not live up to your best on an album.

Everything outside hip hop doesn't quite cut it on a hip hop playing field. He has already established that he is one of the greats so why doesn't he try and bring people on that? There was no Lupe Fiasco, no Bleek, no Def Jam rapper, there was no-one, and in my opinion a come-back album, especially after an album like The Black Album should've been more powerful. It definately should've had more artists. Name me 1 come back album from an artist that left on a high note, that never had anyone featuring on an album?

Nas is one of the few artists I know that could have no1 on the album and still make the album a classic. Jigga has that ability, but this was not the time to try it. This was a time for the whole of hip-hop to be happy that 'the king has returned' and you can have all the football ads in the world you want, but if you have no1 from hip-hop giving that support, then you fall short of what you were supposed to bring.

  • November 21, 2006 12:58 PM

  • Exactly DJ Miles High, TOP DOGG IS THE SHIT HOMIE!!! TRACKS LIKE JUS DIPPIN, BUSS' ROCKS, DOIN TOO MUCH, TRUST ME SO MUCH W/SUGA FREE, BUCK EM', DON'T TELL, AND BOUT YO BIDNESS ARE CLASSIC TRACKS DOGG. THEN, THE LAST MEAL IS JUST THE SHIT TOO WITH "STACY ADAMS", LOOSIN CONTROL, BRAKE FLUID, TRUE LIES, WRONG IDEA AND MANY MORE ON THAT CLASIC LP. THEN WE HAVE PAID THA CO$T TO BE THE BO$$ WAS THE SHIT AS WELL WITH SUCH TRACKS AS;"I MISS THAT BITCH" "THE ONE AND ONLY" AND "BALLIN" ARE JUST SICK AS FUCK. R&G WAS JUST THE SHIT TOO, ME AND MY EX-GIRLFRIEND WOULD FUCK TO THAT ALBULM A LOT, IN PARTICLULAR TO THE TRACKS, "Promise I", "Rather have a girl like you", "Lets get Blown", "Fresh Pair of Panties", "Perfect" and not too mention he had the hot tracks : "OH NO", "BANG OUT" "UPS AND DOWNS" "The Bidness" "can you control yo hoe" and "pass it pass it."

  • Let’s speak on something of substance for a moment. Something that really matters. Can we do that for a moment on this blog?
First…I want to thank SOHH.COM for allowing me the opportunity of representing the "MySpot" page for the Kingdom.
While I understand that people may have different beliefs, there is no denying that loving and respecting the next person is true living and the only way to see change in the world.
Music is a powerful tool, and while we have a separate blog for Atlanta, Houston, etc...we do not have a blog dedicated for individuals to share how Hip Hop has played a positive part in effecting change in their heart, family, and community.
Please hit up SOHH.COM at myspot@sohh.com and let them know that you would like to have a blog titled "SOHH Spiritual".
It could be used for different individuals to post up their own beliefs...and express how hip hop is being used to feed their souls. There would be no biased based on religion, and on each blog everyone is free to express the agreements, disagreements etc.
It's time we start looking inward, so that we can trully begin to affect the outward. There is much at stake.

    God Bless each of you!

  • Yeah I seen the 378,936. Its acutally not bad, but the game said he was gonna do a mil first week. He talked about how banks sales dropped off from last cd but he has a drop of 208,000 this time around. He should still get to plat though.

  • If he gets a plat so what? He talked himself up like he was a big boss when it came to sales like Em and 50. 50's Massacre is almost certified diamond worldwide. Game said he would probably outsell Snoop and Jay Z his second week, LOL. He claimed he would retire if he didnt reach 1 mill, he didnt even reach his last album, it has to be considered a flop because in his words he had "the most anticipated album of 2006". And Jay Z will outsell that next week. Look forward to hearing how Game and Jimmy Henchman spin this in interviews.

lol, your an asss to the 3rd power.

game sold 378k and spent triple the amount of money that banks spent on his album.this is business 101, why would you invest so much in something thats not selling?there is a thing cold down swing and thats hipop right now.game lost and yall are too dumb to see that.he needs to recoup because he paid nas, busta, just blaze, kanye $$$$,scott storch$$$, william, cool & dre.damn that was a high price album just to try and prove 50 cent wrong.guess what he needs 50 cent to be where he wants to be.the documentary was a better album and it sold more.this nigga had 2 dud singles wow cmon, most of the album was mimicking dre, beats were good so he got his moneys worth on that.
reality is g-unit showed how resiliant the team is, they took shot from d-block, game, fat joe, nas and more, but they are still the top team in the business.
i gaurantee 50 will have the most anticipated album of 07 real talk.its gonna be a double album, i cant wait for you haters to talk shit becuz i know yall salty about the stripper not getting enough tips.

  • the Doctor's Advocate section?? lol!! Reason 1. Game makes good music (and you hate that he is doin in G-Unit daily) 2. G-Unit is over and you need good music to listen to, cuz Banks cd was brutal and very very weak. (not to mention brutal sales figures). 3. 50 cent is singin on every f'n G-unit track 4. You are sick of all those so called gangstas hollerin G-Unit! every minute of every song. 5. G-Unit calloborates with nobody of significance other than G-Unit lemmings. 6. Game callobarations on new cd - Kanye, Snoop, Dogg pound, Nas, Jamie Foxx, X to tha Z, Busta, Nate Dogg, Will I Am and so on. (Very nice indeed) 7. I could go on and on, but ultimately deep down inside you, G-Unit as hip hop record makers is coming to an end and you can't face the reality of the situation. Time to go run to Eminem and Dr. Dre to save face!?! Great job Game, the hip hop world thanks you. Peace

  • I just bought the Game, Fat Joe, and Jay Z music and I must say I didn't get what I expected. Jay Z's album is o.k and thats it. He has a couple of lines I'm feeling but thats it. His last albums he had songs I was feeling. I have much respect for Jay Z after seeing him hold down a concert by his self in Houston, but this album is not even close to what I expected. Its like GHOST IMMORTAL said he has an attitude of HEY I'M JAY Z AND YOU KNOW I'M TIGHT. The beats are not bad but not good either. I think its earphone music and not in your trunk music. When you do so many other things as Jay Z does you no longer have that hunger. PLEASE GET IT BACK JAY!
The Game cd is tight but I don't care to hear him say 1,000 times that Dre didn't help him. I feel him regardless.
Fat Joe's cd is slamming to me though. This is my first time buying his music and it won't be the last. His production is real good and his music I'm really feeling. Basically think he is hungrier than any other of these artist and that what seperates his album. I'm not saying he's a better rapper than them but his album comes off as someone who was VERY HUNGRY when making this album.

  • The only reason why Game didn't sell as much is because Interscope has a monopoly over the hip hop industry and 50 Cent's their bitch.Jimmy Iovine and the rest of the people there have a lot invested in 50 and weren't happy that he was being destroyed by Game, Joe, Jada, D-Block, etc so they cut off Game's advertisement-Just like I theorized that Jimmy Iovine told Dre not help Game with the Doctor's Advocate. If Dre had helped the Game, he would have sold more.
Do you ever wonder why everyone who attacks 50 ends up being scrutinized or suffer bad album sales? Its because Interscope is backing him-Not because of 50 himself. Why did you think that Ja Rule's Blood In My Eye bombed? Why do think Benzino got scrutinized for his attacks on Em and 50? Why do you think that Cassidy's video which making fun of 50 got cut from BET? Why do you think that Game left Aftermath? Why do you think that Styles P left Interscope? Why do you think that publications such as VIBE and XXL dickride 50 and G-Unit? Its because of Interscope's vested interest in 50 and their monopoly over the industry. Before being signed to them, 50 was nothing more than a pussy rapper( He still is, bear in mind) that no one respected, why he is suddenly such a threat now? Y'all need to start opening in your eyes and start realizing that corporate America has taken over hip hop and we're just allowing it.
The overall point is that whenever people take a stand against these guys, they get scrutinized. 50 is definately to blame for his actions, but who put him in that position? The real blame lies with interscope, as well as Dre and Em for signing his punk ass.
