"When I'm In Ya Neighborhood, Ya Better Dig A Moat..."

So today, while I was thinking about a blog to write, I started thinking about the fact that other than Lupe Fiasco, it doesn’t seem like there are a lot of emcees that are having fun making hip hop music these days... there are just a ton of pissed off dudes trying really hard to get an image across. And I don’t want to be that nostalgic dude talking about, “Ohhh, I remember backinnaday when De La Soul would talk about rollerskating and biddies and potholes, and we all wore neon colors an’ shit and everything was gravy,” but sometimes I just can’t help it...

For all the talk of “look at how much hip hop has progressed,” it’s actually been kind of stagnant for a while now. Sure, it progressed in the sense that everybody knows about it, and it’s become the most successful form of music in the market, and that clothing lines and retail stores have opened up and flourished through it; but if hip hop is still progressive, how come it hasn’t really changed in the last five to seven years? Hip hop started out as fun, then started to transform into something that was socially conscious, and then into either gritty street reporting or money-obsessed object-hoarding bragadoccio.

Now don’t start picturing a crazy, wide-eyed, overanunciating KRS-One getting all preachy about how modern day artists are ruining hip hop, ‘cause that isn’t how I feel. To clear it up, I love the grimey shit. My beef is with the fact that where there used to be a balance between party shit and street shit, there’s now a monopoly held by artists who take themselves way too seriously; I miss the balance.

When you actually start to think about the state of mainstream hip hop today, things aren’t so bad; there are some lyricists out there, there are some innovative producers and there are some really dope songs that blow up every now and then. But with most of the stuff that gets national airplay these days, there’s so much tough guy posturing and studio gangsta shit going on that no one’s really being themselves. This led me to thinking about “U Mean I’m Not” from Black Sheep’s A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing, which led me to thinking about something else...

And that’s when I went and found this on Weird Warren’s Vi-Vi-Vi-Video Countdown:

I seriously need to go rent that movie again.

U can brainwash me with that shoulda lean all u want. it was a hit a good hit song, but I have no idea what he was really saying except "my girl got a girlfriend". When rappers realize the gimmicks don't work we get that real hip hop.

  • Rappers are not selling anymore. Why????????. P. Diddy only sold 170,900 copies the first week. That is not normal. That is the end of pop rap. When pop rap ain't selling the rest of rap doesn't have a chance

  • MTV:The Game came through our office and played a bunch of tracks from his upcoming LP, The Doctor's Advocate. Believe everything your man is boasting about the LP: It's just that sick. One of our favorite songs is definitely "Hate the Game," which features Nas. God's Son said his West Coast homie is the truth. "Man, I met Game through my boy LES before Game's [first] album came out," Nas said. "I met him in L.A., and we kicked it right there. Since then, he kept it straight G with me. Dude always kept it straight G, and I think he's one of the tightest dudes out there. He wants it, he's going for it, he's a warrior. I can appreciate that a whole lot."

  • New Artist Jibbs' Single "Chain Hang Low". A History behind the nursery rhyme that the song is biting off of .

Recently there is a new artist out of Saint Louis that goes by the name JIBBS. Jibbs debut single "Chain hang low" has a history that most people are not aware of. The particular nursery rhyme that the song mimics is "Ears Hang Low" The history behind this song is that during the civil war Confederate soldiers would remove certain body parts (primarily ears and testicles) from the deceased corpses of freed slaves who were fighting as Northern (Yankee) soldiers after their battles. These "trinkets" were then placed on a rope necklace and worn as a trophy piece. As the lyrics to the nursery rhyme state "do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro... etc" "Can you throw them over your shoulder like a (Continental) soldier". This word (Continental) took this nursery rhyme from racist jargon to playful melody. The word that filled this space was (Confederate) as in Confederate soldier. Other nursery rhymes have done the same i.e. Eenie, Meenie, Minee, Moe catch a Ni**er by his toe. Not Tiger. My question to young people black and white is that "Does knowing the history of the nursery rhyme change your opinion of the New single by Jibbs. " Personally knowing this myself I can't stand to hear the song. It seems to advertise our ignorance as a people. I wrote this note to inform people of this. Knowledge is power and Ignorance IS NOT BLISS; its SUICIDE. If you don't know, you can't change. So black, white, indifferent tell me how you feel about this now that you've attained knowledge

Good looking out. I know its not about East vs West or South vs East - TUPAC WAS NEVER ANTI-NEW YORK - HE WAS ACTUALLY PRO-NEW YORK IF ANYTHING - but for Jay to continue too talk greasy about the West - Something has to be said - I know in ATL, HTown - Reasonable Doubt - Remember - "Too much Westcoast ass lickin'" - "Every since Snoop crashed the buildings" - I could go on. He has been taking shots at us for awhile now despite his many WS collabs - remember - "I give Dre credit but that's were it stops" - We have been listening to Dude!!!

  • Good blog, we do need more balance in our music and in our lives. Alot of young cats think being gully is all it's about. I'm a 70's baby, so I remember when music was just music, and it wasn't nothing to jam out to Genesis, Kool Mo Dee, or Duran Duran. Shit, back then we even jammed off Culture Club. Everything wasn't always serious, and thats what hip hop miss. I think E-40 does a good job of balance in his music, as well as DeLa Soul.
