Jay vs. Snoop: Whose album will be this week's winner?

So tomorrow, two prominent artists who have been in the rap game for over a decade are both dropping albums. As everyone already knows, those artists are Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z. But the big question is, who’s going to have the better album, and subsequently, who’s going to move the most first-week units?
For Snoop, this is his 9th studio album since 1993 (not counting Dogg Pound, 213 or Eastsidaz albums); for Jigga, his tenth album since ‘96 (not counting the bullshit with R. Kelly), and also, a comeback album from his 2003 “retirement” from making hip hop records. Jay’s sold over 21 and a half million records in the US alone, while Snoop has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 million. They’re both huge names in the rap game, and have been ever since they dropped their first albums. And when it comes to relevance in today’s market, it’s a given that they’re both going to do pretty big numbers over time.
But tomorrow, fans will be heading to their local record store -- or Target, or wherever the fuck people buy CDs these days -- to pick up the new release of the day (which for some, is a weekly ritual), and there are lot of people who will be faced with a decision: Blue Carpet Treatment or Kingdom Come. Granted, there are lot of people who will pick up both, but for many, it’s a question of finances or other circumstances and picking up both won’t be an option.
I think there're just as many people on the East coast who love Snoop as there are people in the West who love Jay, so I don’t think passé coastal allegiances will really come into play; for this round, I think it’s strictly a question of quality. Both albums have been available for listening for at least a week before their release date; Kingdom Come was heavily leaked (as was almost every other big album that dropped this year) and Blue Carpet could be heard in it’s entirety on MTV.com. And from what I’ve gathered so far, the reviews coming back from Jay’s album haven’t really been all that positive. Not only that, but he’s riding on a mediocre single (“Show Me What You Got”) to generate sales for the album, and a lot of people have considered his return to the rap game after two years of “retirement” where he did a number of guest spots on people’s albums, a little bit corny.
Snoop, on the other hand, has had two singles -- “Vato” and “That’s That Shit” -- that have been well-received, despite limited radio airplay in many areas. And those who listened to Blue Carpet came back with mostly positive reviews, especially regarding the production on the album. Besides that, this is also the album where Snoop has said he is returning to form as the Gangsta Snoop of old -- a move that has been as widely embraced as it has been criticized. And then of course, you have his reunion with Dre.
I myself am going to cop both albums; I’m definitely a lot more hyped on the Snoop album, but I still want to see if Jay’s big comeback album is any good. Sales-wise, I think that the timing may just provide the chance for Snoop to outsell the self proclaimed “greatest rapper alive,” which would be a huge step for West coast rap music. You can never count the Jigga fan base out though, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Also, on an unrelated note, I wanted to take a second to thank Bird, da_natrol and Nimrod for sparking some intelligent conversation in the response section of Friday’s blog. Hopefully some of the readers took a second to read the discussion that you three had going, because it was definitely a breath of fresh air from a lot of the irrelevant, aggressive, opinionated banter that goes on in these boards a lot of the time. Keep doin’ your thing.

I think that Jay is going to sell more just because he sells more than Snoop on a regular bases. However, Jay-Z's album has about three good songs, and the rest is mediocre (Can we say 'He's coming out of retirement, Jordan on the Wizards')
I personally do not think either of them came back that hard..... no classic albums BUT something to talk about...

The Jay-Z album is pretty good, but The Black Album was better. Jay lost his swagger. Be honest. He's avoided The Diplomats like a plague until the week before his album release. His tricks are corny now.
As for Snoop, I think him and The Game will take it for 2006. This is Snoop's best album since Doggystyle.
But the alltime BEST is Doctors Advocate! Classic.

personally i'll be happy if both dudes come out well sales wise. i think its a its a win-win for hip hop overall.
from what i hear they're both quality albums. I actually heard more, if not all of, the Jay album opposed to the Snoop piece. A lot journalists are hating on jay's album, but its doin good on the radio. I hear folks bumpin the bootleg everyday. I'd say its far from a failure and far from anything mediocre.
I think you and others don't like "show me what you got" because y'all didnt grow up with a musical backround (e.g. playing instruments or goin out to shows with live instrumentation). If you think about it tho, that shit is tight. Beyond the beat, is it a better party record than "Laffy Taffy"? I say hell yes because it's definitely got more substance lyrically and makes more sense.
Not every party single lyrical rappers come out with can have as much lyrical prowess as "Big Pimpin". I remember the journalists hated on the Black Album too. And i know i like that one...so i think its gonna be another classic with the people, but hated on once again by the media.

Jay's album is really good actually and gets better on each listen. the tracks with usher and beyonce however do suck. Jiggas had the #1 album 8 times, and with 6 solos. Show me what you got is #8 on billboard, while snoop aint on the charts, atleast not the top 50

Now possibly, Jay might sell more because there's more advertisement of him on MTV, but I know FOR A FACT 2Pac will outsell Snoop Dogg, as much as I got love for him too......1!!!
jay is guaranteed to sell more, since he always goes multiplatinum. this is his comeback album, with all the hype around it, i wouldnt be surprised if he sold more than 2x as much. snoop consistently goes platinum these days. but jay is a step up
2pac's album is coming out 2morrow but no one seems to give a shit, especially the left coast blogger

I took the time to read Friday's posts and it sounded like the Sohh NY of old. Keep putting up these relevant topics Eighty and u might hijack all of Reckless' bloggers.
I'm not one to be concerned with sales. I intend to get both cd's tomorrow. I don't care about the advance notices I've received from others, Jay has earned my money. I've always loved Snoop especially when he was flowing like he did on tracks like "LIl Ghetto Boy". If I had to guess, Jay will outsell Snoop because it's highly anticipated. I honestly can't wait.
It's not about scans, it's about quality. These niggas are bringing hip hop back and I'm participating in the monumental event by dropping my hard earned dollars.
Jay-Z's album gets better everytime I listen to it. Kingdome Come is hot. Lost ones is hotter. 30 Something is hotter than both of those records and Trouble is a certified banger. Anyone who thinks Jay has lost his swagger listen to Trouble! Snoop will sell but Jay will sell more. By the way it looks like Game will only sell somewhere near 500K his first week. Go to Hitsdailydouble.com and check out his "projected" first weeks numbers. They are alway pretty accurate.

Jay will sell more on this go around. If the album is bad then he'll decline next time. Snoop hasn't had a good album in a while. His production usually is garbage. This one sounds a lot better, should help with sales. To address the Doctor's Advocate- The album is good, the documentary was better. Still though, he got like 4 solid joints that can be repeated on that thing. Anybody that rates this anything higher is "Pro-Game", nah I'm being nice ya'll just riding the "Bozack". Personally the dude got skills but name dropping, crying for Dre, that stuff is just not appealing. I'm a Grown Man, I can't co-sign 16 tracks of that stuff.

Now back on topic. This one is hard to call. I am the same age as these cats, but the reality is they are both legends who are past their prime. Jay might sell more just because he always does, but he won't sell as much as he is used to because the word is out that his CD is ok at best. Sadly, Snoop just hasn't had a lot of promotion on this project and that is going to cause him some problems. So my final verdict is Jay will outsell Snoop the first week, but as a true Doctor's Advocate stan, I think Game's first week numbers will be at least double Jay's and Snoop's AND he will outsell them the week they come out.

Now see I'm feelin this CD. It's not a classic like the Chronic because that CD is fire from beginning to end and Game stumbles on a couple few songs on this one, but the first 6 tracks are straigh FIRE in my opinion. And a couple of them are good enough to have been on The Chonic. "Nigga nigga nigga, I'm from Compton Compton Compton! That's my ish.

Personally, I'm just glad that some of these veterans are starting to realize that they have a responsiblity to make good music to offset the dumb shit that is all over the airwaves. And we need to stop saying certain niggas are too old to make music. Hip hop is a relatively young musical genre, so a lot of our artists are growing with the art form. All the bigger acts are 30+, and until these young cats start really making some next level shit, the "old heads" will continue to get my money.

I definately agree both will sell. I just think Jay is going to do a little better. By no means do I think Jay is going to leave Snoop in the dust.
I ain't saying kingdom come is trash, but it by far the worst solo album released by Jay Z. Withtht eexception of DSYnasty , it is his worst offerring. If you are serious try Target, Best Buy and Walmart. I had no problem finding the CD, but I admit the Walmart I went to only had the clean version.
Personally I already have the bootleg Jay-Z. I did not like it at first, but it has grown on me. It's actually a solid album. More mature, not for teenagers. I'm going to buy the bootleg Snoop $5, you can't beat that. I'm feeling "That's That". I hope both of them do good #s. Jay will probably sell more units but Snoop should have a strong showing. I can't totally agree with you, but get where you are coming from. I am not a huge rap fan, but from what I've heard Jay has put out some quality music this decade. I also disagree that a album has to be out for years to be considered a classic. Below is my personal list of CDs that I felt were classics the first time I heard them. It's real, Jay's singles aint that hot to me right now. I don't think I'mma cop Kingdom come cause i'm not feeling the hunger come from Jay. As for Snoop, I was told he had some heat on the album. We'll see, cause you know how vets get real comfortable and lose their hunger(due to the millions of dollars they generate). So if it came down to it I'd cop that Blue carpet, and I'm not from the west cost so this isn't a bias comment.

Nigga Jay-z all the way. Jay will at least go gold in the first week but maybe even plat. Snoop will struggle to sell 200k in the first week. Snoop is cool but the Rap Game has passed him by. Although "That's That" is a hit it's only because of the beat but lyrically Snoop is trash. Nas will be the only one to challenge Jay.

I agree with the ametuer here on this one. Album sales' big key is consistency. Jay-Z has had big first week sales ever since he released Volume 2: Hard Knock Life back in '98. Snoop's best sales week was the 800k he pulled when his debut album, Doggystyle came out, and since then, he hasn't really been able to push more than 200k in a debut week. I don't know if you think my observations are whack, but I'm just stating it from the performances of other albums.
I personally would like both artists to claim the top spot on the Billboard charts next week, but I want it more for the Snoop because he's been getting crapped on a lot lately (London airport, etc.) and I'm afraid all this negative publicity will harm his album sales rather than help them. No offense to the Jay-z fans, but don't you think his coming back to the microphone is as overated as Mase's return two years prior? And speaking of Mase, he was ubiquitous and a big of a conceited prick, which is probably why his "comeback" only pushed Gold Status. Back to Jay, I'm pretty sure he can land some big units, but if he continues to play "invincible" and refuses to keep his comeback modest, it WILL COME BACK AND BITE HIM IN THE ASS. I cosign the hell outta that. Let's be honest yall know damn well Jay is gonna sell more than Snoop because he got way more promotion for his cd. I mean he got the NBA, Budweiser, BET and MTV all promoting his album. I was at the Howard University stop on the tour and he ripped it, the whole concert was packed. I don't think Snoop has enough buzz for his cd, personally I like both his singles better than Jay-Z's singles but they get no airplay or radio play.
Both Jay and Snoop are two of my favorite rappers but lyrically yall know Snoop's best days are behind him. I am glad he's going gangsta on this cd though. But Jay still got something left in the tank, it may be on some club type shit but its still nicer than anything Snoop says anymore. I just think all yall want Jay-Z to fail so bad that you don't give an honest opinion to the cd. If you haven't listened to it and are just judging by the singles then you should wait till tomorrow to talk shit. The cd is good (not great), but way better than Jim Jones' bullshit cd.
I'm not feeling Snoop's cd all that much (but it's better than half the shit that came out this year) It got too many fillers on there (ie. I wanna fuck you with Akon, LAX with Ice Cube, 10 Lil Crips, Which One Of You...and about three more). Granted, Jay's cd is shorter but it only got two fillers in my opinion (Show me what you got, and Hollywood with Beyonce). I can't wait till next week when the Clipse come back and rip the industry apart. They previewed the whole cd on the radio in DC last week and it was sick. True, Jay never did those kind of first week numbers, but he still manages to sell over time. Everyone lately has been
concerned with first week numbers and forget about the long run. Game for instance is on track to have a great first week but according to daily sales he is already losing a little steam. Game moved 19,000 units today while Akon moved 40,000. It's all about the shelf life in the end.
Look, whoever says games album is wack must be out they damn mind, and must be on sum hater ish. Its straight fire 4 sure, But as far as snoop and jay. I will be coopin both of them. I'm really feelin tha snoop joint wit r.kelly its fire. And at first I didn't really feel "show me wat u got" but it grew on me. I think they will both do good numbers. I think jay will come out on top. But dnt be suprised if game sneaks up on both of them on his second week sales.
My review on both albums n hip-hop in general:
I copped both albums on Saturday morning and listened to both right through. I got much love for both artists as I still remember getting kicked out of a Holiday Inn when we first played '22 2s'. I still remember getting a bootleg tape of Doggystyle which I had 2 bump in my walkman cause in the early 90's police considered hip hop listeners as suspects for whateva. Some shit ain't changed, but the hip hop has.
Coming back to both these artists...I first listened to Jigga's album which I was hyped about, though I personally felt dat if Nas dropped first it would've been a bigger blow. However, though I was impressed, I somehow didnt feel that same fire as I heard in previous Jigga albums. Don't get me wrong, the album is good, very good if you must, but it doesn't reflect for me some of the Jigga aspects. Instead, it shows a much more mature artist. If you listen to Reasonable Doubt and then everything inbetween, you can see how he has grown, but Kingdom Come for me didn't show an album which I can expect further growth from. More like of an album that says 'I have done it. Though I have made millions from hip hop and other business ventures, this album says I have done it. I have accomplished everything I wanted to do in my life to show the critics and lovers alike what I have done'.
It takes a much more mature listener to understand where he is coming from. I didn't think the beats were as up to par as The Black Album, and considering there are hardly any features from hip-hop artists but mainly R&B artists can be looked @ it from to sides. Positive: Jay done hip-hop now try a different challenge. Negative: Jay supposed to be a king but with no subjects? Ne-yo, Beyonce, Usher, Pharell, 2 other nobody's n Chris Martin.
I don't know how the Jay-Z fans are gonna react. They'll most likely love it cause it's Hov, but I just feel that to bow out on an album like The Black Album, I would've thought a king of hip-hop would made a more powerful entrance. A bit like how Dre did when he dropped 2001 summin summin years after The Chronic. I would've loved to have seen other Def Jam rappers or even whoever is left on the Roc to take part. Lyrically Hov still got it for me on tracks like Minority Report, Oh My God, Kingdom Come. Even though he lyrically strong on others i feel the beats let him down. Or even if da beat was phat, the new attitude of 'accomplishment' might have done it. I don't know. Like I said, mature listeners might like it more. I played it to a producer I know who is in his 30's and he loved it cause he could relate to some of the samples. Oh n speaking of Dr. Dre, he produced, Lost Ones, 30 Something, Trouble and Minority Report he mixed the whole album for Hov, check the credits on every track. Nevertheless, this is a very good album and you will be stupid to not give it a look and believe after the 2nd time listening some of the songs I passed on the first time, started to grow on me (don't get it twisted, 'Hollywood' wid B, is just plain awful and I jus can't get into 'Show Me What You Got'). This is an album that reflects Hov's personal growth and maturity as well as his fans from back in the day. An artist that has grown with his fans. Almost waiting in hope that the same kids that were hungrey for success when Reasonable Doubt came out have grown to be successful by the time Kingdom Come came out, just like Jigga.
Now onto Snoop. I feel he followed the same format as R&G. Those who loved dat album, will love dis while those who hated it might take a 2nd look here. There are quite a few bangers (Candy, Gangbangin 101, LAX, Bitch I Knew, Don't Stop), fillers (10 Lil Crips, I Wanna Fuck You, Pssst!) n a couple of lame ones (i thought Crazy with Nate Dogg could've been done better), but it was as I neared the end of the album that I made this album a classic in my mind. 1 track stood head n shoulders above every thing else. It is for this 1 song that I would probably say this album is better than anything I have heard this year (e.g. Meth, Banks, Ghostface, Game, Jay-Z...anyone).
The track I'm referring to is Imagine with Dr.Dre and D'Angelo. From the second I heard the piano keys I knew it would be an immortal track. Then u hear Dre raspy on the beat, then the violins and then your mind is blown. Then I heard the Dre lyric:
'Imagine Biggie wid his son/ Imagine Pac getting called 'Pop' by one/ Imagine a mother struggling/ dealing with a system that don't give a fuck who shot her son.'
...n I almost damn near cried cause I think that is summin every true hip-hop fan has wondered since 1996/1997. Whenever u hear a great mentioned in hip-hop nowadays, u hear a comparison or some dillusion of grandure that if dey were alive dey would be riding with that particular artist or whateva. That was the truest, heart-felt lyric I have heard all year. It is for just those simple words, that one thought that I put Blue Carpet Treatment above any album I liked this year. I don't think there will be an album released this year that would have a song on it with a lyric like that. What made me proud is that, you hear all these artists screaming their the king of this n that BUT THE GREATEST LYRIC ON A SONG THIS YEAR WAS FROM A SONG THAT WAS DONE BY THE TWO MOST INFLUENTIAL HIP HOP STARS OF THE WEST COAST. It wouldn't have mattered if it was from a southern or east coast artisit but I mention this because there has been alot of debate as to who is King of the West recently (just like who is the King of NY) but you can define a king by their actions and Snoop & Dre showed why they don't need to scream it. Real recognise real.
In the end, there have been alot of album's this year that have been amazing but slept on (e.g. Rotten Apple, 4:21, The Format etc.) n this is the reason why people say 'hip hop is dead', because we, the fans, are killing it by our stupid allgiance to just one particular artist. Even though I don't like Mariah his album, Doctor's Advocate (sorry I couldn't resist!) had some good beats and though I may not like The Game or his lyrics, I can't take away credit from the guy who has worked hard on summin and achieved what he has. If I stay loyal to what a few artists say, I would miss the beauty of hip hop and all her faces. Death is an eternal sleep, so if we the fans sleep on albums just because of our loyalty to other artists or regions, then we give little life to the one thing which is our lives. Just a thought. I like Snoop and Jay. I'd probably say Jay is the better rapper. But I went for Snoop's album. The track frequency is crazy check it out and also a track with Dre called imagine and there's also good tracks with Cube and Game. Overall i'd say it's not a classic but i'd say it's one of his best. I was going to get Jay's album later on but by what people are saying It sounds pretty shit, but I still think Jay will sell more than Snoop but not because of better album but because of marketing. The album that I'm most lokking forward to is Nas Hip hop is dead can't wait for that shit.
I like Snoop and Jay. I'd probably say Jay is the better rapper. But I went for Snoop's album. The track frequency is crazy check it out and also a track with Dre called imagine and there's also good tracks with Cube and Game. Overall i'd say it's not a classic but i'd say it's one of his best. I was going to get Jay's album later on but by what people are saying It sounds pretty shit, but I still think Jay will sell more than Snoop but not because of better album but because of marketing. The album that I'm most looking forward to is Nas Hip hop is dead can't wait for that shit.
When I said the track frequency I meant(Think about it)produced by frequency. My bad.
In terms of who made the better album, Snoop wins..but Jay wins the sales mark off hype and commercials for NBA and Budweiser, plus he's Jay, even if his album sucks, its the comeback.
