Has Hyphy Gone Too Dumb With This One?

We’re gonna get to the official Hell Hath No Fury review on thursday, but this one right here is too good for me to pass up.
After I was offered this job, I had to write a sample blog (which you can find below) to submit with my resume. I had heard one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life earlier that week, so I decided to write about that. Then, today -- two and a half months later -- I got an email that the video was currently being shot for said song. I can’t imagine what exactly the video will be like, but I’m fairly sure that it will be every bit as terrible. While we here in Northern Cali have been randomly subjected to hearing the track on the radio, the rest of the nation will soon feel its wrath; may God have mercy on our souls.
Now without further ado...

It’s official like a referee whistle: the hyphy movement has reached an all time low. I understand that every rapper in Northern Cali is trying to jump on the bandwagon as quick as possible, as they very well should; the public and the press are going to pay attention to this about as long as they paid attention to reggaeton (although reggaeton still gets much love from the bootleggers in Santee alley in Los Angeles). But please. The ridiculousness needs to stop here.
When The Federation jacked Corey Hart’s... ahem... “timeless” classic and mutated it into “Stunna Glasses at Night” it appeared that going dumb had reached record dumbness. But the masses approved, the single was thrust into the top ten charts of radio stations up and down the West Coast, and it became apparent that anything would go at this point. But then came “Ghostride It.”
Mistah Fab has been a stalwart when it comes to Bay Area Rap; he came up under Mac Dre, undeniably the father of all hyphyness, and his last album, Son Of A Pimp was on point as was his recently-released mixtape Recess. “Super Sic Wid It” (featuring E-40 and Turf Talk) enjoyed heavy airplay, and he even popped up with Too Short and E-40 on the remix to Wolfpack’s “Vans.” He got signed to Atlantic. Everything seemed to be going his way- until now.
Set to the one of the weakest beats ever, “Ghostride” sends up the theme song to Ghostbusters, with busting ghosts replaced by scrapers, grills, stunner shades, ghostriding, and everything else you need to throw on a single to let people know you’re a card-carrying member of the hyphy movement. And Fabby doesn’t come that bad on it lyrically; it's just that the idea to make the song should have been rejected from jump.
The Bay has made dope music for decades, but the current trend in Northern Cali seems to be that you have to drop hyphy catch phrases in order to catch notice. It’s a team effort -- established rappers like San Quinn, Too Short, E-A-Ski, and E-40 are stepping up to give virtual unknowns a hand, and the Bay is finally getting noticed by the rest of the nation. But hopefully Bay Area artists can use the momentum they’ve gained from following “Tell Me When To Go” with a barrage of like-minded insta-hits and can cover some new ground, without damaging their credibility along the way. Bay Area, stand upppppp!

I'm from bmore and have never really heard any hyphy material other than the joint with E-40; "tell me when to go". I still don't quite understand what the hyphy movement is. I guess i'll have to read up on it. and I'm from the ol'skool too.
Hyphy? And people wonder why they can't get a deal or airplay. This looks like something High Schoolers would do in the cafeteria or schoolyard. It's bad when grown ass men have to resort to childish antics to get noticed. Just what we need... More coonery. :(

Hyphy is aight when they dont over saturate you wit the shit. Its aight to have a couple songs here and there. But dont Go Dumb and Get Stupid in every song. That Stunna Shades is garbage, real talk. I liked the very first song The federation came out wit but they can keep Stunna Shades.
Ive said it before and ill say it again. Only dudes im checkin for outta the Yay area is Keak Da Sneak and San Quinn for right now.
And E-40 album went hard as fuck, square business. Beats were on point like Jason Terry last year in the playoffs and so were the lyrics. I'll even go as far and say it was a classic. I havent heard ONE song off that albunm that i dont like yet. He kept it straight Bay area too. I didnt know hardly anybody from the Yay that had the feature spots wit him but they all wrecked, thats whats up.
If you aint from the bay then you'll never understand hyphy..Mac Dre might have initially pushed the movement but the whole going dumb shit comes from the Famed sideshows in East Oakland..in the bay we are alays looking for an excuse to just act a fool, look at how are fans act during any sporting event..it's just another avenue...but to the point..F.A.B. is my nigga and we go way back since he was a youngin in the north but the song is crap,Sean T...the dude who produced it should be ashamed...it's even worse than that shaboobalaboopie crap song he had or Ants In your Pants (which is a whole nother subject all together)...I think what has happened is that he dumbed down some of his shit cause the sad thing is dude can really spit some knowledge but his first shit nobody gave a fuck cause he wasnt talking shit that the Bay wanted to hear...he hooked up with Gary Archer who brother used to be PD at a local station and he has slowly morphed into what you see today...sad but He now got the Deal with Thizz/Atlantic and they are approving this crap song...you should play The Mama Song from Son Of A Pimp...my folks produced it..

Lie Bic G, I'm also from Baltimore and haven't heard much of it except that tell me when to go joint with E-40, who I've never really liked anyway, and some song by Keek Da Sneek that I can't remember the title of right now. DOn't get me wrong, I respect all these dudes' hustle. Get your money while you can. Personally, I'm just not feeling it.

I always support the Bay in what they've done, but it's time to start giving those MCs shine that have been going hard for years. For all you not familiar with the Bay, it's more than "Ghostride it"...there are several MCs that can make it in any region with the right shine behind them.
Heaven forbid we associate NYC w/ Chicken Noodle Soup or ATL w/ Laffy Taffy, it would be an uproar, I would like for the same people who defend their necks of the woods with the same passion to keep that in mind before they come on and bash the whole Bay for some silly shit.

My young dudes are right; Hyphy did derive from what’s known in the Bay as “The Side Show”. I’m a East Oakland OG, I was right there, shit, I was a part of it. To perhaps give ya’ll a better idea of how this Hyphy movement came about, let me tell ya’ll how the side show started…
Back in 84-85 the San Leandro (One of the cities boarding Oakland) skating ring (Roller Garden) was the place to be on Saturday nights, muthafu**kas who didn’t even skate would be there because it was just that crackin’. You had niggas from as far away as East Palo Alto (30-40 mi. away) to Vallejo (40-50 mi away) coming to the Roller Garden (1) because it was thick with chicks up in that bitch (2) folks couldn’t wait until the Rink was over (1:00 am) because the Side Show would begin.
Back then Bay cat’s wasn’t ridin’ scrapers (late 80’s to late model Buicks, Olds and Chevys) like today’s Bay youngta’s, we was ridin’ 65-67 Mustangs, 67-69 Cougars, 70-73 Caprice Classics (Glass House Boy), old school Falcons, Cutlasses and Chevelle’s; straight muscle cars! And a lot of em were restored to perfection, complete with that Meco’s (Not to be confused with Maccco) candy paint (You Bay youngstas probably don’t even remember Meco’s huh?) and dumb slap.
Anyway, after the Rink was over it was essential for niggas to get they “Side” (Floss) on and hit the block where the bus stop across the street from the skating ring was. Ya’ll know how it is/was; niggas had to make sure the chicks saw him in his clean ass whip. In the process, cat’s also had to let other cats know that they shit not only looked good, but it was stupid runnin’ too. It started off modestly; cats would burn rubber as they took off from the light by the bus stop, some cats would dip (Step on the gas and then brake; repeatedly) their shit and the people waitin’ on the bus and those of us who drove and just chose to stand by and watch the show would get juiced! And it seemed like the more juiced the crowd got, the greater the antics (You know niggas had to top whatever). Niggas would be hangin’ out of windows, driving on the wrong side of the street; whatever.
San Leandro police got fed up with these Side Shows and started jackin’ folks for any and everything, which pretty much led to cat’s hittin’ the block a couple of times and then striking back to the Town (Oakland). Back in the Town folks would stop at the am/pm on 98th to get gas and what not and of course when more than a few gathered, cats would get their side on. Only now, cat’s were takin’ it to the next level, niggas with posi traction would spin doughnuts, which drove the sideliners even more crazy (It could have been all that weed and them 40’s too. hehehe), every week there started being more and more people at the am/pm, folks who didn’t even go to the skating ring just started coming to the am/pm after the skating ring was over because they knew that’s where the Side Show was coming. The shit got big, real big; you would have a 100 – 200 people out there chillin’, dudes hollerin’ at chicks, fools out there bustin and everybody havin’ a good time.
Eventually am/pm became the first of a few areas the Side Show would hit in the Town because you know the Oakland police wasn’t going to let the am/pm shit go on for too long, they began runnin’ niggas away from there, so it was on to the next spot; the Eastmont Mall (The old walk up Taco Bell stayed open until 3:00 am). This is where shit just went to a whole nother level. Folks would be cruisin’, there would be hella cars parked in the paking lot, muthafu**as were dancin’ and there were more side busters than ever. Fools wasn’t just burnin’ rubber and spinnin’ doughnuts no more either, they were figure eightin’ and eventually racin’ for bread/pink slips. When the Side Show hit Eastmont, it was like a wildfire, they couldn’t contain it, there would be several hundred folks (From all over the Bay) in the lot kickin’ it, there was even a designated area for fools to get loose and do their doughnuts and figure eights and shit. This went on for… I don’t know, 2-3 years and then one night OPD came DEEP, there were like 60 cops on motorcycles, in cars and plenty of patty wagons too. They blocked all the entrances/exits to the Malls parking lot and starting clearing it, and for those who didn’t have license, you received a ticket and they were towin’ yo shit. From that point on it would be a struggle to keep the Side Show going.
Oh… please believe they didn’t stop it, as the Hyphy movement is proof of that today, but they damn sure put a dent into the Side Show activity. We would damn near be at war with the police (Throwing bottles at they ass and even destroying a few of they’re vehicles) for trying to break up the Side Show; and this shit still goes on to this day.
I’m not mad at the youngstas and the hyphy movement, hell they learned that shit from us, they’ve just taken it to another level, like I said; “You know niggas had to top whatever”. The new Bay youngstas so stuntastic, they ain’t even got to be in the whip to give yo ass a dose (Ghost ride that bitch! lol); what can you do to top that!?
It might seem hella dumb to ya’ll, but in the Bay, it’s way of life man.
As far as the Hyphy music goes, some of it I dig, some I don’t. Just like with all other regions, I’m not gonna like everybody’s shit; period.
