What Happened To The Ice Cube We Used To Know?

Posted on October 11, 2006 2:30 AM

cubebreal.jpg
So Ice Cube’s releasing Laugh Now, Cry Later: O.G. Limited Edition with a special bonus DVD with 60 minutes of extra footage... proving that he can’t release anything these days that isn’t a movie.

It’s been six years since Cube released the War/Peace double disc. In those six years, he’s released such Oscar contenders as “Ghosts Of Mars,” “All About The Benjamins,” “Barbershop(1 and 2)," “Are We There Yet?” and “XXX: State Of The Union.” But does he still need to rap?

Apparently so, since enough people bought Laugh Now... to make it go gold. Granted, O’shea’s making a grip for every movie he makes these days. But why limit capitalism, right? Why let a solid catalog of albums hold their place in history when you can drop turds like “We Be Clubbin’” and “Go To Church” and make MORE MONEY?

I’m going to pull out my Magic Hip Hop Internet Crystal Ball now and forecast some of the replies: “SOHH 80, u a hater,” “Why you hatin’ on dude gettin’ money? He hustlin’”, “Blah blah blah,” etc. I can respect Cube’s paper chase. I just don’t understand why he’s making music that’s sub-par to the standards he’s made himself in the past, and how people are still buying into it. Then again, who the fuck understands how Mike Jones went plat?

The reason that I’m disappointed is because The Predator is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. And his new shit isn’t. And there’s not a hip hop fan out there who can tell me he or she hasn’t gone out and bought the new album from one of their favorite artists and been pissed as hell when they got home or got in the car, popped it in the deck, and found out that it was garbage compared to their last work.

Case and point, a sample from “We Had To Tear This Mothafucka Up,” from 1992’s The Predator:

“I gotta Mac10 for Officer Wind
Damn, his devil ass need to be shipped back to Kansas
in a casket, crew-cut faggot
Now he ain't nothin but food for the maggots
Lunch, punch, Hawaiin lyin’
Niggas ain't buyin
ya story bore me
Tearin up shit with fire, shooters, looters
Now I got a laptop computer
I told you it would happen and you heard it, read it
but all you could call me was anti-Semitic
Regret it-nope, said it-yep
Listen to my big black boots as I step
Niggas had to break you off somethin’, give Bush a push
But your National Guard ain't hard
You had to get Rodney to stop me cos you know what?
We woulda tore this muthafucka up”

Damn. That shit’s got me all nostalgic.

Now, find me a verse from his last two albums that comes even close to this one (and to the way he delivered it) and I’ll rest my case. Granted, he’s still not a terrible rapper. Instead of half-assing it as a rapper while being an actor, why not just focus on making films and let the legacy of Amerikka’s Most Wanted, Kill At Will, Death Certificate, Lethal Injection and The Predator live without further muddling his catalog?

Oh, and don’t trip. He’s currently filming the sequel to “Are We There Yet?” Just in case you were worried there wasn’t going to be one...

  • first off may i say i am first so i can act like a child as the rest of these dudes, haha.

second, SOHH Eighty, you just may be a hater. not for the whole thing of Ice Cube is hustling and blah blah to move some album and movie units, but because Laugh Now, Cry Later is actually a good album. granted it may not be a classic, but it is full of positive and thought provoking messages. Now at days to go goldish or platinum, you gotta have at least one party record as a single. Cube didn't do laffy taffy or nothing, the negro did "go to church". i mean shit, dude dropped "why we thugs" and
"child support" also for you. they may not be as tight lyrically as some of his classics, but they got a message in them regardless.

third, theres other shit on the album that i really enjoy, namely, "the nigga trapp", "a history of violence", "growin up", and "spittin pollaseeds". Full of messages and tight beats to match son.

I can really compare this album to nas' last album that most young folks and even older folks hated. when i first bought it, i even hated, as well as this cube album. but i came back and listened to it 3 months after its release, and i was like holy shit this nas is actually pretty classic and it made me realize why he release "theif's theme" as his first single. I think thats what you need to do with this Cube album, give it the 3 month wait period, then come back and holler at it when you got 2 hours of undisturbed free time.

and you better not hate on snoop's album when it comes out, cause the nigga's flow is REJUVENATED....i liked that last dogg pound album too.

  • I don't know about Ice Cube's rap career but I heard 50 Cent is producing a movie on legendary S. Jamaica gangster, Lorenzo "Fat Cat" Nichols and he wants Cube to play the part. Naturally, Cube may want to do a joint venture since HE is a proven film producer. I think it's a good look for Cube who is more actor than rapper at this stage of his career. Finally, Cube will play a G again onscreen instead of some grinning clown. He's really too old and economically removed from the topics he raps about anyway.

  • I think the quality of Cube's music went downhill when he adopted the 'Don Mega' personality.

He went from speaking for the people, to boasting on himself.

I think that's the main difference between himself, and Public Enemy frontman Chuck D. Although their releases are not as publicly known, the quality of work remains the same because they (PE) stay true to what the group was originally about.

It seems now, must of our favorites from a decade or so ago feel the need to adopt new personalities to compete with the new-schoolers....LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg all did it....

...quite embarrassing if you ask me....regardless of the money being made, like the commentor said...it only muddies the catalog with sub-par material.

Maybe his style has changed (cube) but shouldn't it? I mean he's not a teanager anymore, hes not poor, he's not in the hood, so he's talking about things that he actualy does.
A new rule in rap should be this,
    1) your first album can talk all about how hard you are, what a gangster you were, and how you were in the hood all day!
    2) once you go getting money, attending holywood parties, etc no more gangster talk!
    3) Talk about how good your life is now that your out of the hood, you spend more on clothes than most of us make in a week! talk about that
    4) start to go back to the reason to become succesfull is to get out of the hood!
    5) stop saying that the word ghetto is the same as ignorant!
than people would take rap seriously, as of now its a joke, Rappers pointing guns at camera's on dvds! Come on who are you scaring your mom!
    grow up!

  • I usually stay away from this thread but I had to answer the blog master's topic. "Laugh Now, Cry Later" is one of the tightest albums this year period. Cube is in his 30's with kids and he can be nostalgic. He created a lot of the swagger that a lot of these gangsta hip hop cats carry around these days. He doesn't and has never needed a ghost writer and the beats are even banging. I guess he could always talk about killing people, running drugs or some wack ass beef like a 25 yr old with immaturity issues but Cube is a man. He's doing what I expect from a man my age, evolving....

Stop the hate, it's not a good look.

I don't know how old you are, but it could be that you just aren't in the same place as him so you can't relate to his music. Maybe it is more suited for his peers that the usual music demographic. We have to face it. He is a grown azz man.

Did you really expect him to be putting out the same stuff like The Preadator and Death Certificate ( The greatest Hip-hop album ever)? Dude done changed, grown-up, got a family and is making power moves. And Laugh Now Cry Later is still one of the dopest albums of the year. What new cat has put something out like "Child Support" or the title track? Nah, everyone still tippin and trying to grind. Cube is still giving you that brain food. And for the record, the last verse on Growin Up is doper than that.

  • Cube's album was better than most of the stuff coming out nowadays. It wasn't a classic, we all know that, but it was a breath of fresh air in this era, u still had songs like N**** Trap , he did his thing considering he is an older m.c, notice how i said M.C & not rapper, there is a big difference & that gets lost amongst the hip hop fan sometimes. I don't think most rap fans know what an M.C is anyhow.

  • Well a lot of people have something to say about Cube. But I doubt if they are true followers of Cube. And surprisely Cube has never changed at all. I mean really really really really listen to his albums. Listen to the words listen to his lyrics. If I broke it down then you people will feel me. But honestly Cube never says any weak lines. And home boy talked about We be Clubbin come on now. That is some real stuff. You don't even listen to the words "After the club its either Breakfast or Fu(king, hope we ain't ducking from haters in the parking lot who ain't got nothing. Trying to prove something, fronting be we just bumping to the Marriot trying to get some harry cock cuss it ain't nothing wrong get your club on."

That is a Classic line, b/c he talks about stuff we can relate too. He isn't on some fantasy trip. Cube never talks about anything that the average man can't acheive or the average person hasn't been through. And I still think Bootlegs and B Sides is a classic album as well. All his albums are great b/c he isn't sugar coated or on some mega super star trip. And Cube Raps b/c of his fans and his love for the art form. Yeah he made his mark. But tell me what artist do you get excited about their album release date? No one but Cube. I remember when we released an album a year that was the highlight of everything to me. B/c it fed me something that the world tried to deny me of. But anyways my point Cube never left. He is the Don Mega of hits and put all his albums togehter you will understand he never changed.

did you even sit down and listen to the album.....he had a message in just about every song.....even Go To Church.
what the fuck are you smokin? Cube released a SOLID album.....it had a little bit of everything, but it wasn't your typical rap album. The album had some positive messages in them. Go back and actually listen to the album. Don't base your opinion on the single(because people know that most singles are aimed for the clubs).

Cube put out a solid album worth buying, and this coming from someone who doesn't buy many albums. But i went out to Best Buy and spent 12 bucks on a really good album worth listening to.

  • What happened to Cube? He grew up!! It is unfair to expect Cube to stay the same when the new generation is praised for their lackluster skills. People want the "Brainless Rap" now a days. People talk about "oh he made a kiddie movie(Are We There Yet?)." SO! It is a great family movie which shows that black people can live without violence as well. Laugh Now... in MY opionion is the best album of 2006. There is a reason why Pac, Biggie, Snoop, Nas, Game, Ras Kass and a lot of other artist pay/paid homage to Cube. There is a reason why he was honored at VH1 and other award platforms. His prior albums along with his impact on hip hop are cemented in music(not just hip, but music in general) history. Now if you want to talk shit about someone, talk about LL. Lip Licker has been in the game 20+ and has nothing to show for it. Still depending on Def Jam and now 50 to help his career. Cube is the first major artist that I now in hip hop to fund his own album and release it independently; which is yet another thing that he will add to his impact in hip hop.

"laugh now cry later" is one of the best, one of the most thought provoking, and successful albums to come out this year...

the reason i said "successful" is grant it went gold, but it went gold INDEPENDANTLY..without any major backing or hardly ANY promotion...cube pushed and financed this album ALL BY HIMSELF...thing of all the $$$$$ he's getting in return...it's only common sense to re-release it, because he already caked in a gold 10 million the 1ST time around

homie gave us food for thought AND doing it big, it's always a hater that shits on another man's success!!!

  • How could you hate on a legend that made a solid album?!

Ice Cube has been in the game over 20 years so I didn't expect him to come with it like some new lyricists (maybe Saigon) but "The Nigga Trap" is probably the 'realest social/concious' record all year and you SHOULD have quoted that.

It is almost impossible for anybody to top 'Amerikkka's Most Wanted' and 'Death Certificate', but it says alot about a legend who could still put out 'Why We Thugs' after all of these years and stay relevant.

I mean Cube has been apart of too many classic albums and was the hardest 'hood' rapper from about 89'-92', so stop hating on the legend.

I know your just trying to get responses on the left coast blog, but why hate on our West Coast legends. If you don't like his new music fine. But it wasn't wack.

SOHH Eighty, you're giving Sac town a bad name...

  • To SOHH Eighty:
I agree with your point-of-view on Ice Cube. The man has lost his hunger, and ability to formulate the strong lyrical content that he once could. Not to mention that he looks like a damn fool in his "O.G." attire, when I'm sure that he lives in a white neighborhood. You'd think that he'd be past rapping by now.

He (and LL) need to hang it up; because they are proving that are a mere shell of their former selves.

Let's be real, he could throw up on record and it'd still sound better than what 90% of the rappers do today, he's one of the great mcs that're still on top:
    "Laugh Now, Cry Later">>>>"The Documentary"
"Go To Church">>>"Show Me What You Got" or whatever Gay-Z' lame ass single's called

  • Titlee track is full of jewels and to me vintage Cube. Also people grow mature and develop, if you still rapping and acting the same way you did 10 years ago something is wrong with you. Cube has matured, granted he doesn't still live in South Central Los Angeles and he very well be in one of those neighborhoods way out " n*gger go home " spray painted on his house, but as far as being true to the game movies or music you still ain't never seen Cube with grey joint, or portraying a role that makes the blackman look ignornat. Shout out to Cube a true West Coast G, I suppose reckless would have this N8gga in a jherri curl doing 25 with an L with the rest of the lynch mob.

  • Like someone said earlier, nobody on this planet earth is exactly like they were fifteen years ago. People grow up, and Cube's no exception. SOHH 80 needs to get out of The Neighborhood of Make-Believe.
As a few posters here have said, if you LISTEN to Cube's lyrics closely, he's always rhymed about real shit. Not everybody gangbangs all the time, or preaches Nation of Islam politics--there are those (even in the ghetto) who go "clubbing." To me, "We Be Clubbin'" was really Cube satirizing and, in a way, POKING FUN at some of the nutty things that go on in clubs. I don't think it was Cube's intention to deliberately make a song that the ladies could dance to; "We Be Clubbin'" was ABOUT clubs, but I don't think it was designed FOR clubs or to be a "club song" per se.
I'll give another example: a song like "Doin What It Pose 2Do" at first glance may sound like just another entry in the "bling-bling" category. But listen closely to the lyrics and the sneer in Cube's voice. The song can be seen as Cube MAKING FUN of the materialistic, "let's-judge-everything-by-appearance-instead-of-looking-deeper" attitudes of the new millenium. He's against excessive materialism, but like any human being, Cube is aware of materialism's tempatations, and that's what the song's basically about, IMHO.
So Cube's always dropped knowledge--it's the just that the subject matter and often the style in which he raps changes from song to song. Someone here opined that people may get thrown off if the beat(s) aren't to their taste, thus distracting them from the lyrics, and that's probably true. I think that's why some had problems with the WAR disc in particular; people weren't ready for the almost Goth sound that some of those tracks had, and it distracted them from what Cube said on "The Peckin' Order," "3 Strikes You In," "Ghetto Vet," "Penitentiary," "Extradition," and "Dr. Frankenstein," to name a few, which had solid points to make. Others here have cited some of the best songs on LNCL as great examples of vintage Cube, such as "Why We Thugs?", "Child Support," "The Nigga Trapp," and I agree. Cube basically spit well on the bulk of the CD. For SOHH-80 to expect another PREDATOR is asinine. Real artists do different things w/ their albums and experiment. While everyone has a right to their opinion on which of an artist's CDs is their favorite, expecting artists to spit exactly the same way each time, about the same topics each time, and over the same beats each time, is illogical.
SOHH-80 acts like it's the crime of the century for Cube to reissue the CD w/ the DVD? I say, "go for it!" The beauty of putting out your own stuff is that you can do things whenever/however you want. There are independent artists in the Bay Area who have also done this: JT The Bigga Figga reissues his CDs periodically and has made some DVDs as well (w/ Daz, Snoop, etc). Mac Dre's last two CDs were released w/ free DVDS (AL BOO BOO, THE GAME IS THICK PT. 2), and some of Messy Marv's recent CDs (his BONNIE & CLYDE CD w/ Marvaless and his solos DISOBAYISH and BANDANNAS, TATTOOS & TONGUE RINGS) were released w/DVDs. And outside of the Bay, Sacramento native Brotha Lynch Hung's last new CD (the underrated LYNCH BY INCH) had a bonus DVD as well. I'm sure there's others who have done the same. Cube is no longer on a major's timeclock, so if he decides to make more CDs, the freedom he has will hopefully let him expand on what LNCL has done so far.
Oh yeah--to those who use Cube's movies as an excuse to hate on him, saying things like "oh, I can't take Cube seriously anymore because he made 'Are We There Yet?'..." Let me say this: those who have seen the "Back To The Future" trilogy may remember a dude named Biff Tannen. Well, Thomas F. Wilson, the talented actor/singer/comic/artist who played Biff, made a pithy, but on-point statement that people would be wise to remember before they criticize Cube's movie choices. Speak up, Mr. Wilson...

    "It's a MOVIE! Movies...are PRETEND!"

"What happened to the Ice Cube we used to know?" He grew up, SOHH-80. You should try it sometime. You'll like it. LAUGH NOW, CRY LATER is not perfect, but it's dope. THE SOURCE gave it four mics out of five, and I think that's about right. Just my opinion, though.

    PEACE!
