The definition of a classic hip hop album has never really been outlined; you can’t look in the dictionary for an outline, and the H volume of Encyclopedia Brittanica doesn’t have any section dedicated to listing Hip Hop Classics. But nonetheless, classic albums DO exist, and although there are certain albums that nearly every hip hop fan considers to be classic, for many, the definition of such an album is something that is entirely personal.
At one point we had The Source magazine to help us out with defining what constituted a classic album by letting 5 mics do just that. Then they started auctioning off their ratings, gave 5 mics to Lil Kim’s The Naked Truth, and lost all credibility. XXL gives out the odd XXL rating, branding it as an album that will withstand the test of time. And the media frequently makes references to past hip hop albums as classics, telling us that just in case we didn’t know, that’s what it was.
Although West coast hip hop has had it’s time in the shadows, it’s certainly had it’s time in the spotlight. It started with the birth of gangsta rap, which influenced hip hop across the nation, an influence still seen to this very day. For any rapper who’s ever made a song that had biographical mentions of dope slanging, murders, etc., they have one group to thank: NWA. Whether or not Eazy, Cube, Dre, Ren and Yella were the first to do it is beside the point -- they got the public to embrace it, paving the way for generations of thugs-turned-rappers to come.
Even after the breakup of NWA, their members went on to create classic hip hop albums of their own. Ice Cube released Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, and with the help of the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy’s production team), he crafted an album that is undeniably a classic. It’s arguable that he also went on to release two more classics in Lethal Injection and The Predator. And no one can forget the album that one other NWA expatriate went on to release in 1992- The Chronic.
The Chronic went on to open doors for a handful of artists -- most notably Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage (for a short while), and a skinny ass 21 year old rapper named Snoop Doggy Dogg -- but it introduced the masses to the G Funk sound, and gave West Coast hip hop a sound the rest of the nation could identify as being from Cali. But there were a slew of albums that weren’t lucky enough to make it to the masses, and yet are still widely considered to be West coast hip hop classics.
In 1993, there was a crew from Oakland who was starting to make some noise, and this crew called themselves Souls Of Mischief. We didn’t know much about them, just that their sound was different, that they weren’t talking about gangsta shit, and that they were affiliated with Ice Cube’s cousin, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (who had a classic of his own with his second album, No Need For Alarm). Although the album didn’t go quadruple platinum, there are hip hop fans across the nation who hold this album in the top ranks; even in Queensbridge, Kings player (and fan-ass-whooper) Ron Artest connected to it, and wears a number 93 on his jersey to signify his love for the album.
Just as there are classic West coast albums, there are tons of classic East coast albums- everything from the first three Public Enemy albums, to all of the Tribe albums, to Paid In Full, to Criminal Minded, to Illmatic (the first album to receive 5 Mics from The Source), to Reasonable Doubt. And although it might be a little under the radar for some, there was Big L’s 1995 debut, Lifestyles ov Da Poor and Dangerous, which featured a posse song from "Children Of The Corn," with McGruff, Murda Mase and a young Camron Giles. Whether it was heard by everybody and embraced as a classic by the mainstream is not the point; the album instantly became classic to anyone who ever heard it.
The point of all this is that starting next week, from time to time I’ll be remembering some West coast classics on this blog. Some of them everyone will be familiar with, and some of them will be some albums that you might not be familiar with, yet I consider to be classics. I might not catch everything in the order you want, and you might feel like I’m missing one, but I’ma do my best to cover as many of the bases as I can. If there’s an album that you feel I’m overlooking, or might not be familiar with, give me a holler at the SOHH Left Coast myspace page at www.myspace.com/sohhleftcoast and I’ll do my best to include it. Other than that, just have your opinions ready. Which I’m sure won’t be a problem for anybody.

FIRST....I ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THAT!!! LOL
wamp wamp
doggystyle stupid is a motherfucking classic, Chronic, Pac albums see y'all later...
Dr. Dre - The Chronic & 2pac - All eyez on me are the greatest albums ever from my point of view a must include.
All the death row albums, Straight outta compton, Death Certificate, strictly for my N.I.G.G.A.Z, 93 til infinity, Quik is the name (or safe & Sound), Gangstas Paradise, No one can do it better, Cypress Hill, Bow Down.... too many to name..
If u got a track with that fake blood on it, its instantly NOT a classic !!!
a classic album is an album that anyone, whether listening to it for the first time or not, would love at least 8yrs after it`s release. Listen to Harlem World, you would think that album is new, but only to realise it is 9yrs old, but it still bangs. l laugh when an album is about to drop and you hear the internet saying it`s a classic yet it hasn`t hit the stores yet. Look at TI`s The KING, noone remembers any song from it, but it was released this year, niggaz have already forgotten. Classic albums talk for themselves, niggaz might front, if you in the club and you hear Fell so Good, Tell me what you want, More money more problems, yall be on the dancefloor in no time.
The Chronic.....The classic of all classics.....maybe not lyrically but still classic, real talk. You can sit on here and try and debate me all day, but I say that for this reason and this reason only.....That album changed the way Rap and Hip-Hop is made, ever since then, all the way up until today. That album showed the producers and rappers that rap songs dont have to just sound all ugly and gritty, you feel me. That album showed that rap songs could have a melody and still be tight. That right there was the shit to me. That G-Funk shit is in everything made today, real talk. A lot of people claim that they chagin the game and this and that, but Dre really did change the game wit that album right there.
How can ya'll fools forget that gem by Chunky A. (Large & In Charge)?
Ya'll better reconyze.

What makes a west coast classic is Dr. Dre affiliation. You had to at some point in you career been tight with Dre if you want to make a classic out west. Look at Game.
WHAT MAKES ANY CLASSIC ALBUM??????????
TIMELESSNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN PLAY ILLMATIC, DOGGYSTYLE, THE CHRONIC, READY TO DIE, AND STILL TAKE AWAY FROM THAT SHIT, OR STILL HAVE THE CLUB GO BANANAS OVER IT.
LISTEN TO THE NEW WEST COAST LYRICS, "TURN ON YOUR T.V. ALL YOU SEE IS THE A, DO WHAT THEY DO AND KEEP SNAPPING TO GET RADIO PLAY" IN 5 YEARS WILL ANYONE REMEMBER WHAT THE FUCK THIS FOOL WAS TALKING ABOUT?????????? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS NOT CLASSIC, GAME DOES NOT MAKE CLASSIC SHIT, THE DOCUMENTARY HAD LIKE 60 BIG NAME RAPPERS OR SINGERS ON IT, GAME NAMED DROP LIKE 200 TIMES, AND IT GOT NO AWARDS FROM THR SOURCE OR VIBE OR GRAMMIES OR NOTHING. IT WAS NOT A CLASSIC.
first 3 Cube Albums
Classics
i gotta agree the chronic is probably the best of all time. Makaveli was a classic too, that's another formula these niggas use today. Ready To Die was an instant classic. Illmatic is always on the list. You wanna talk about what constitutes a classic.. to me its not only the album content but the fact that niggas is still trying to buy this shit to this day ,young and old. these albums are still selling my niggas.
Allow me to name some classics that no one else will say. Here we go:
1. 3xKrazy-Stackin Chips(If you wasn't feelin this album, you're not a fan of Bay music. That's it, that's all.)
2. C-Bo-Gas Chamber or Til My Casket Drops
3. Casual-Fear Itself(I'ma Hiero fan.)
4. Ras Kass-Soul On Ice(Real hip-hop heads know why this is a classic)
5. E-40-Charlie Hustle, In A Major Way & Federal
6. B-Legit-Tryin To Get A Buck
7. Mac Mall-Untouchable
8. Mac Dre-Genie of The Lamp
9. Keak Da Sneak-Sneakacydal(this nigga's responsible for everybody going dumb & getting hyphy. Feel free to argue with me on my yahoo)
10. The Team-Hyphy Juice mixtape(yeah, yeah, I might be reaching by calling this a classic. But, I phucks wit the Team)
11. The Luniz-Operation Stackola(Dem niggas became legends after this album. And yeah, I was knockin Ice Cream Man back in 1993 way b4 Master Percy started callin himself that s#!t)
S#!t, I think all of the other classics were named already. If I'm missing some albums, somebody need to post it so I can remember. 2 the west, my niggas! Rich City/Smallzville deformed pretty boy
Classic Album
1. Continuity
2. Consistant Themes
3. Consistant Music
4. From start to finish the album feels like a great movie
Hella Game Haterz!!
Look, I love Dr. Dre to death but honestly the Chronic had classic tracks and broke a lot of artist, The Chronic 2001 was by far a superior album, that album was the pinnacle of late 90's hip hop. It had the street bangers and the ill classics, I mean the Chronic was a great starting point but the Chronic 2001 was his crowning achievement. Another underatted classic was Xzibit's 40 days and 40 nights.
The best damn cd ever
o yea, how can u talk about West Coast without mentioning Mac Dre. He was the tru father of gettin stupid doo doo dumb. He also had two classic albums, Young Black Brotha and Genie of the lamp cuz if u mess with me I'll slice u up like roast beef
Underground West Coast Classics:
Above the Law- Uncle Sam's Curse
Kokane- Funk upon a Rhyme
Compton's Most Wanted- Music to Driveby
South Central Cartel- Gang Stories
Tha Dogg Pound- Dogg Food
Da Lench Mob- Guerrillas in da Mist
Thug Life- Thug Life
(okay, that's kind of a collabo)
Above the Law- Time will Reveal
-Really, damn near anything by Above the Law is worth copping. They might be the most underrated rap group of all time.
The Luniz- Lunatik Musick
(that album was better than Operation Stackola, but it got no love b-cuz it didn't have a '5 on it' song to get radio/club play)
Brotha Lench Hung- Season of da' Siccness
Rodney "O" & Joe Cooley- Me and Joe
Ice "T"- O.G.
How could u cats forgets about Compton's most wanted "How the hood took me under" was one of the most gangsta trax ever. Not to mention they gave it to NWA's Niggas 4 Life
u niggas are forgetting the best album of all time ENTER THE 36 CHAMBERS WU-TANG 1993 also the 5 other wu-tang albums after that thats why there the greatest group of all time also MOBB DEEP IN 95 AND IN 99 and P's solo in 2000. So far 50 CENT HAS THE BEST ALBUM SINCE 2000 WITH GET RICH OR DIE TRYING so thats classic and by next year i bet they will be calling TONY YAYO THOUGHTS OF A PREDICATE FELON A CLASSIC THAT GOT SLEPT ON
fuck wu-tang!
If u got a track with that fake blood on it, its instantly NOT a classic !!!
Posted by: Westsida4life at October 9, 2006 06:55 AM
LMAO!
I love that fake Blood though.
Anyway, regarding the chronic: i cannot stop playing that album...it came out when i was three...classic albums must stand the test of time...they must sound like they were released yesterday...they must be relevant to the present...and, in my opinion, a young'n must be able to appreciate the album too...The Chronic measures up to the above criteria, and that is why it's a classic...
SPICE M-FKING ONE HAD ONE OF THE DOPEST ALBUMS OUT FROM THE WEST COAST. I THINK IT IS CALLED 187, SOMEONE HOLLA AND SET THE RECORDS STRAIGHT.
Nuttin by Doja!!!!! He an insult 2 da Bestcoast. Half da Westcoast names he drops should never cross his lips coz he ain't on their level. He will never be a legend n if da West (who have had gr8s like 2Pac, Easy E, NWA, Snoop Dre, Dogg Pound, Ice Cube, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Mack 10, W.C, even Xzibit, Luniz, Big Syke, E-40) believe dat Gayme n his Black Balled Street bitches gonna do summin 4 dem den dey dont ever deserve 2 be on top again. U got people like Rass Kass who lyrically nuts but don't have dat commercial gimmick.
In da end I believe da West got enough legends 2 bring demselves back but first dey gotta believe dey never fell off coz 2 true west coast fans dey never did. When a whole coast's main roster is built up of legends how da fuck can u fall off? But 2 believe in a fake Blood/Gangster dat was a construction of 50 Cent, Dr. Dre n Eminem den people r desperately searching 4 anyone 2 call king. Fuck dat, I'll be damned if people thinking Gayme da new 2pac. Never. Never in da history of hip-hop will dat happen. Dat's like sayin D-Block gonna go 5x platinum!!! LoL, ok dat was a bit harsh, but still. Da West needs a Pappose or 50 Cent or a Lil Jon, some1 dat makes da coast get hyped.
Whether u like G-Unit or not, 4 years ago 50 demolished da scene, NY comin again wid raw fire like Papoose. B4 dat it was Ruff Ryders time, b4 dat it was Bad Boy. Da East always had some1 w8in 2 explode. Da south had da Cash Money period, den Lil Jon n now its every 'Lil' or 'Young' artist dat comes out wid a record deal. Some r aight, some r garbage, but dey getting da promotion.
Right now da west aint got no promotion on half as many artists as on da East or South n if dickshit's like Webbie can get a deal I'm sure alot of West Coast artists can. However 2 put ur hopes on a bitch made faggot like Doja is stupid. Even if da prick was a good rapper n didnt name drop every 2 bars, 2 put ur hopes in 1 man 2 do summin a whole coast of legends aint doin is stupid.
Wid a whole bunch of legends whose CD's are all considered classics, dey should really do more 4 their coast n their fans globally, coz when u r in da streets of Calcutta n u hear a little kid bumpin 'Doggystyle' by Snoop, it just shows u how many millions of ghettos around da world are influenced by west coast classics. N its coz of da power of their music I could never accept any1 right now 2 be like dem.

Some of yall kids are funny and suckin too much dicks. Especially the kid who wrote a 3 page long comment just sucking on wack rappers. Since when Lil John was a great thing for Hip-Hop? Ha ha ha, this 12 yr olds make me laugh... A LEGEND IS SOMEONE THAT HAS EVERYONE LISTENING AND WATCHING EVERY ONE OF HIS MOVES... NOT EVERYONE HAS TO LIKE HIM, BUT THEY KNOW HE IS GOOD SO THEY HATE HIM FOR NO REASON.
Yo', good lookin out 22" Choppas on that SCC album title. "Gang Stories" was the first single--"In Gatz we Truss" was the album name. My bad.
M.C. Ren's "The Final Frontier" was just an E.P., but it was memorable nonetheless.
Speaking of E.P.'s:
Ice Cube- Kill at Will
(I still listen to 'Dead Homiez' sometimes)
Eazy E- It's on Dre (187)
(Real Muthaphuckin G's was an all time classic--west, west yall!!)
The Doctor's Advocate is the forthcoming sophomore album by West Coast rapper The Game. The album's name, The Doctor's Advocate is a reference to the rap pioneer Dr. Dre who essentially "found" The Game, according to the rapper himself. It is expected to have much of the same producers that his first album had, including Kanye West, Just Blaze, and Cool and Dre. There has been much speculation on whether Dr. Dre has contributed to the making of "The Doctor's Advocate".
The album was originally intended by The Game to be released on June 6, 2006. The release date, however, had been pushed back several times and is now scheduled to be released on November 14. The album is rumored to feature appearances by artists Snoop Dogg, Nas, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes and Nate Dogg.
The Game released an unoffical single from the album called "It's Okay (One Blood)" on July 24. Following its release, the rapper collobarated with his photographer and personal friend Jonathan Mannion to create a video for the song. On September 20, 2006 93.5 KDay in Los Angeles premiered The Game's single Strip Club (Let's Ride). On Tuesday, September 27, 2006 The Game appeared on MTV's Sucker Free countdown. There he revealed that he had recorded a nine-minute long track with Nas and Marsha (of Floetry). He also stated that Kanye West will produce and appear on a track, which is rumored to be titled "Wouldn't Get Far". The official album artwork is displayed all through the week of 9/26 in MTV's TRL studio for Spankin' Free Music Week which The Game appeared on. On 30th September 2006, the track "Hustla's Dream" (see below) was leaked to the internet [1]

MTV:The Game came through our office and played a bunch of tracks from his upcoming LP, The Doctor's Advocate. Believe everything your man is boasting about the LP: It's just that sick. One of our favorite songs is definitely "Hate the Game," which features Nas. God's Son said his West Coast homie is the truth. "Man, I met Game through my boy LES before Game's [first] album came out," Nas said. "I met him in L.A., and we kicked it right there. Since then, he kept it straight G with me. Dude always kept it straight G, and I think he's one of the tightest dudes out there. He wants it, he's going for it, he's a warrior. I can appreciate that a whole lot."

Whoever put any 50 cent album should be shot. His lyrical ability doesnt warant any classic statis especially sense both were solo albums with uninventive beats. Im not sayin the beat werent dope but still unoriginal. Plus the issues addressed in the album weren't important to anyone that wasn't trying to compare that bastard to 2Pac

How can you say Lethal Injection and the Predator are classics, but not mention Death Certificate.
for the K.Ola:
i didnt say that was what niggas i doin now but they was in 93. u didnt see that 6-4, them fuckin khackis, and they was at a bar-b-que all in 1 video, DRE DAY. plus i just moved from out there on 109th, between Budlong and Norm, down the street from washington prep. in the real hood for real for real!!!

MC Eiht- WE Come Strapped
E-40- Hall of Game
Westside Connection- Westside Connection
Eazy-E- Eazy Duz It
i dont care what anyone thinks but ready to die is not a classic. its true in that album big was raw and skilful, but it was too 1 dimensional.
no doubt "life after death" is a classic
Damn, ppl hate Game Like they know him personally or he fucked their girl after robbing them of their life savings.
Look, if 2 rappers beef it's OKAY to like BOTH of them. No one will go back & tell the other that you're being unfaithful!!!LOL
PS-I don't listen to either of them!
To Sohh Eighty:
Here's a question: Why does this blog primarily center itself around Dr. Dre and affialiates or Souls of Mischief and others who have collaborated with them? Although, I realize that they have played an important role to the showcase of WestCoast artists, all of their biggest accomplishments stem from their music in the '90's. What about the artist of today? And I'm not talking about Game. I know that there are plenty of them. And they need shine as well.
Point being, I'm from the South- Eastcoast. And I don't mind supporting WestCoast artists, because they've made many hits throughout the 90's, and are primarily known to us as the main source for extraordinary beats. But I'd like to learn more about some of your "underground" artists, and those that are up and coming. You will definitely get alot more responses from me and others who do not know much about the West, outside of those who have dominated the spotlight for years.
beef is when u actually hate each other 50 cent and game dont hate each other game jus wasn't a g unit soldier/or bitch on a leash . he is a star who also has to represent a whole coast.
dont forget Xzibit's Restless was a solid west coast album, almost every song on that cd was a banger. The Game's Documentary is a classic in my mind, plus it helped put the west back and we cant forget Chronic 2001, my favorite album ever next to nas stillmatic
THIS IS JUST MY THOUGHT ON WHAT IS AH WESTCAOST CLASSIC TO ME.
DJ QUICK-"QUICK IS THE NAME"

All of your picks are great, but there is one west coast classic album that has not been mentioned. It is an Oakland rapper named PARIS and the album is called SLEEPING WITH THE MANY . . . very militant, in your face, hard edged, raw, and what true Hip Hop is about.
A few song titles:
Bush Killa
Coffee, Donuts, and Death (anti-police) and many more
please check this album out
