Heroes In The City Of Dope; Also, RIP Tower Records

Heroesinthecityofdope.jpg
So today marks the release of a great hip hop album that a lot of heads have been waiting on -- Heroes In The City Of Dope, a collabo album from Oakland staple Zion I and Living Legends heavy-hitter, The Grouch. But as everyone will soon see, it was well worth the wait...

While the The Grouch, Zion and producer Amp Live have collaborated in the past on tracks such as “Silly Puddy” (from Zion I’s 2000 album Mind Over Matter) and “Flow” (from 2003’s Deep Water Slang), City Of Dope still came out of left field. I guess over the years, the requests for hearing the collabos during live shows finally got through to Zion and Grouch and they decided to capitalize on the chemistry.

The 15 track album is produced entirely by Amp Live, except for one track from Eligh, one from Grouch and two from Headnodic. The production is pretty airtight, as it usually is on Zion I albums, save for a track or two that could be labeled as sub par. And although it definitely had the possibility of becoming corny, Grouch’s ode to his newborn daughter on “10 Fingers 10 Toes 10lbs 10oz” actually turns out to be a pretty touching song.

For two acts with pretty thick posse affiliations, the guest spots are pretty sparse, and even a bit surprising; Mistah Fab, Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5) and Esthero are the only guest artists on the album. But the lyrical forces of Grouch and Zion are enough of a force that they carry the album on their own with ease.

Grouch and Zion I are kicking off a two month tour tomorrow with a free performance at the Amoeba on Haight in SF. If you haven’t had a chance to see Zion I or The Grouch live before, they’re definitely not be missed. If you have seen them before, you already know that they rip shit at their live shows and together, it should be a crazy performance.

Also out today are B-Legit’s new joint, Hood Hustlin’ and The Best of MC Breed, although I’m not really sure he had any “best” songs other than “Ain’t No Future In Yo Frontin’”

And lastly, RIP to Tower Records. The first one was here in Sacramento, and the corporate office was as well (in fact, I had a friend who I worked with at Vapors Magazine for 5 years who had just recently taken a marketing position there), but for the last five years they’ve been going downhill and I don’t think there are too many people who didn’t see this coming. I bought my first album there in 1990 (P.E.’s Fear of a Black Planet, and bought plenty of singles (Ice T’s “New Jack Hustler: "Nino Brown’s" Theme”, Dana Dane, Terminator X and "The Valley Of The Jeep Beats," "We’re All In The Same Gang," Monie Love, tons of other shit) there during my youth and although their prices got way out of control as time went on, that place still holds memories.

Since you brought up MC Breed, I have to agree with your opinion that he really doesn't have too many classic songs. But did you forget about that collaboration he did with Tupac. I think that the song was called "Get Yours." That shit was hotter than the track that you mentioned. But those are the only two tracks that I remember from him. Other than that he's an average WestCoast artist.

Btw... what the fuck happened to the Alkoholiks? That was my team, back in the day.

  • The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) was the most successful of the many African slave rebellions in the Western Hemisphere and established Haiti as a free, black republic, the first of its kind. Africans and people of African ancestry freed themselves from slavery and colonization by taking advantage of the conflict among whites over how to implement the reforms of the French Revolution in this slave society.

Historians traditionally identify the catalyst as being a particular vodou service in August 1791 performed at Bois Caïman by Dutty Boukman, a high priest. A number of complex events may have set the stage for the most significant revolt in the history of African enslavement.

At the time, Haiti was a colony of France known as Saint-Domingue. After two years of dispute among elements of the free population, in 1791 a great slave uprising plunged the country into civil war. Besides the racial conflicts cultivated by slavemasters between whites, gens de couleur (people of mixed African and French descent), and blacks (many of them slaves of African birth), the country was polarized by regional rivalries between the North, South, and West; class conflict between rich white planters (grands blancs), poorer whites (petits blancs), free blacks or gens de couleur (affranchis), and slaves; and conflict between proponents of independence, those loyal to France, allies of Spain, and allies of Britain. Closely shaping the course of the conflict was the French Revolution which began in 1789, and was at first widely welcomed in the island. So many were the twists and turns in the leadership in France, and so contorted were events in Haiti itself, that various classes and parties changed their alignments many times.

The African population got wind of the agitation for independence by the rich European planters, the grands blancs, who had resented France's mercantilistic limitations on the island's foreign trade. This class mostly realigned itself with the royalists and the British within a few years of the French Revolution. Africans understood that if 'Saint-Domingue's' independence was to be led by vile and brutal European slavemasters, it would probably mean even harsher treatment and injustices for the African population, who would be free to inflict slavery as they pleased - without being accountable to their French peers whatsoever. News had probably travelled from the newly independent United States that revolution by whites there had not abolished slavery or improved the lives of slaves in any

Saint-Domingue's free people of color, most notably Julien Raimond, had been actively appealing to France for full civil equality with whites since the 1780s. Raimond used the French Revolution to make this the major colonial issue before the French National Assembly. In October 1790, Vincent Ogé, another wealthy free man of color from the colony, returned home from Paris where he had been working with Raimond. Convinced that an ambiguous law passed by the French Constitutent Assembly had given full civil rights to wealthy men of color like himself, Ogé demanded the right to vote. When the colonial governor refused, he led a brief insurgency in the area around Cap Francais, before being captured and brutally executed in early 1791. Ogé was not fighting against slavery, as such, but his treatment was cited by later slave rebels as one of the influences on their decision to rise up in August 1791 in the same parishes, and to resist treaties with the colonists. At length, in 1792, the French legislature proclaimed the equality of all free people in the French colonies regardless of color, and sent Léger-Félicité Sonthonax to Saint-Domingue ensure that the colonial authorities complied.

  • The Doctor's Advocate is the forthcoming sophomore album by West Coast rapper The Game. The album's name, The Doctor's Advocate is a reference to the rap pioneer Dr. Dre who essentially "found" The Game, according to the rapper himself. It is expected to have much of the same producers that his first album had, including Kanye West, Just Blaze, and Cool and Dre. There has been much speculation on whether Dr. Dre has contributed to the making of "The Doctor's Advocate".

The album was originally intended by The Game to be released on June 6, 2006. The release date, however, had been pushed back several times and is now scheduled to be released on November 14. The album is rumored to feature appearances by artists Snoop Dogg, Nas, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes and Nate Dogg.

The Game released an unoffical single from the album called "It's Okay (One Blood)" on July 24. Following its release, the rapper collobarated with his photographer and personal friend Jonathan Mannion to create a video for the song. On September 20, 2006 93.5 KDay in Los Angeles premiered The Game's single Strip Club (Let's Ride). On Tuesday, September 27, 2006 The Game appeared on MTV's Sucker Free countdown. There he revealed that he had recorded a nine-minute long track with Nas and Marsha (of Floetry). He also stated that Kanye West will produce and appear on a track, which is rumored to be titled "Wouldn't Get Far". The official album artwork is displayed all through the week of 9/26 in MTV's TRL studio for Spankin' Free Music Week which The Game appeared on. On 30th September 2006, the track "Hustla's Dream" (see below) was leaked to the internet [1]
