SOHH LEFT COAST -

One Last Tupac Blog...

Posted on September 18, 2006 12:00 AM

First off, big ups to Black Ice for his guest blogs on Tupac Shakur last week. A lot of you out there had something interesting and intelligent to say in response; and then a lot of you out there decided to completely disregard the topic of the day and turn the message boards into a platform for arguing about whether Pun or ‘Pac was the more talented emcee… All of you may have totally missed the point, but at least it got you talking....

All that aside, I wanted to get one blog about ‘Pac in before we move on. Whether you liked him or not, you have to give credit where credit’s due. Ten years after his passing, he’s proven that he’s not just a part of hip hop history-- he’s become a part of music history, a part of American history. Tupac has become a household name as distinguishable and recognized as Pepsi or Microsoft; even by our fathers, mothers, maybe even a few grandparents. They may not know anything about him, or about his music, or about what he stood for but there’s a good chance that the generation who does will pass this knowledge down to their kids, and so forth.

His influence spread throughout the music industry. His delivery, his cadence and his subject matter have all been mimicked by countless rappers, and his name has been dropped in more songs than that of Jacob or Vuitton or Trump or George Bush, or if you want to take it back a decade, Branson.

But the influence that matters is the influence he had on his listeners. It’s an influence that lasts. He somehow connected with his listeners on a personal level -- something pretty commonplace in the rest of the music world, but seldom found in hip hop. This factor will end up being what keeps him timeless. Parents pass down things they love to their children, and for many, that thing will be the memory or the connection they had with Tupac. He came across (to some people, not to everyone) as a man of the people; everyone on this planet has dealt with some form of struggle in their life at one point or another, and ‘Pac so well characterized it in certain songs that his story could’ve become a version of yours.

For the record, I was never a big fan of Tupac’s music. The deaths of Big L, Dilla and Biggie Smalls fucked me up more than the death of Tupac Shakur ever did. I’m not a fan of everything he did or said outside of music. But I never once questioned his talent, his intelligence or the legitimacy of his place in the hearts of his fans.

Last but not least, there's a poem by a guy named Richard Corey that's been making the rounds in chatrooms for a while. I'm sure everybody will have an opinion on this one. Check it out at and let us know what you think:

"If 2Pac had never died"

I'm a drop from the top, just letting the letters ride
over a thought I had got and mentally set aside
how detrimentally can a life affect our weathered times
but what woulda happened if 2Pac had never died?

First off, BIG would still be around, feeling the hate
cause he wasn't "The Greatest" until after his wake
before then he was "commercial," "sell-out" and "wack"
everyone from Ghostface to Nas agreed on that
peeved that Black was deep in cash he was fostering
and his label Undeas, would prolly be prospering
meaning Charlie Baltimore's debut woulda been Golden
but wait...I'll get to all that in just a moment...

but if Pac HADN'T DIED...the West woulda gone crazy
Dr. Dre never woulda made it signing Slim Shady
Come on.. A WHITE GUY?! Tupac woulda lambasted
Em' when he walked in the door, chalked on the floor
Pac woulda never stopped stalkin' the whore, that's fact!
Y'all may idolize him, but remember, Pac was PRO-BLACK...
Aftermath woulda became a joke, anything else is iffy
and if they didn't make it...then neither would've Fifty

Snoop left Death Row, and Pac soon woulda followed
his own label, creating a archtype West coast model
for MCs, meaning the East woulda had to get it's game up
but with BIG being so hated, that really aint' sayin' much
Plus Nas was in his wack stage, so he wasn't much help
and Jay-Z...Jay-Z, that's another story in itself...
Think about it, his popularity rose cause he filled a void
only when BIG left with his death, Jay started makin' noise
Plus he had only planned on doing 2 albums, it's the cash
from his rise after BIG's death that kept him spittin' raps
He woulda retired as planned, The Roc woulda collapsed
cause ain't no way Bleek was carryin' a label on his back
So that means no third album from Jay, what's that do?
No Amil, No Beanie Siegel...and yep...NO JA RULE!!
No Murder Inc, no Ashanti , but does it really matter?
Without soundin' like Pac, Ja's just another rapper...
DMX would still debut from LL, but with one minus
the Lox would still be Bad Boys, so, yup, no Ruff Riders
I mean, BIG was commercial...but BIG still was BIG
The Lox were wearin' shiney suits with him, tryna get Jig'!
Plus, think about the fact that there would be no Eve!
She was with Aftermath, Pac woulda never let 'em breathe
She woulda just been an ordinary chick, chargin' the door
but with Kim and Foxy friends AND Charlie Baltimore?
She woulda been forgotten before she knew what happened
and if BIG hadn't died, Mase would probably still be rappin'
Bad Boy woulda been huge... Death Row would be decrepit
cause Pac was gettin' out after finishing his 20 records (lol.)
He didn't care, cause as we saw, he was movin' to movies
"Higher Learning" and "Baby Boy"?! More flicks shot than oozies
people woulda called him Hollywood, he woulda lashed out
doing an album between films ‘till the Industry blacked out
eventually hip hop woulda just got tired of the brother
cause you know Suge would drop each album after the other
and if he were still alive, he wouldn't have that martyr factor
so sadly, his career would've plummeted as a rapper
but as an actor? Pac probably woulda won some awards
but with Hip Hop still beefin' between both of its shores
he wouldn't have gotten the recognition of a Citizen Kane
Cause if he were still livin'...West and East'd be beefin' today

That's fact... so what do we have here, Bad Boy's an empire
Death Row's on fire, no Murder Inc. maybe no Rough Riders
No Shady, so fuck riders and groupies, and no 8 mile movies
No 50 Cents, he probably woulda died in a second shooting
East Coast would be surviving, the West would barely be there
cause with Pac just doing movies...does anyone really care?
The South would be wack, Master P never woulda dropped
with "Heaven for a Gangsta".... cause it was all about PAC. .
Midwest would be ILL , Nelly might not be doin' the same shit
With Bone ridin' wit Pac and Big, he might not have made it
They woulda eatin' him alive after they dissed crucial conflict
and everyone else who had bittin' their singy-song shit

So who woulda picked the east up from commercial ruins
Maybe Nas, he'd probaly do just what he's currently doin'
(but can we really say that, without battling Jay-Z,
who don't exist, remember, Nas'd prolly still be lazy)
The West woulda never rebounded, stayin' underground
and with no Chronic II, Dre prolly wouldn't be around
Hip Hop as we know it today woulda been changed forever
who knows...maybe his death changed it for the better
I guess I'll just die wonderin' if we'd be under better skies
If those bullets had missed, and 2Pac had never died...

  • People say that he was a walking contradiction, so what? I'm pretty sure that he knew this.. I honestly think that the whole walking contradiction is one part of a bigger picture which made him as special as he was. It's like, it was a growing process for him. He could have just as easily painted a picture that would appeal to the masses but then he'd be living a lie. Instead, he chose to express himself in a way in which he would have his own personal answer to the topic he addressed and question himself at the same time. If anything, we should conclude that he was highly intelligent to understand that the world is not all the same and that not everyone would agree with him. He was intelligent enough to see that societal issues can't just be fixed with a simple yes or a no.. His approach was a fuck that, a maybe, a what if and a why.. Certain people are annoyed by this and that's really too bad. If you know how to appreciate, appreciate it for what it is and don't just look for the negatives. Look into the negatives but not in a way where you're judging someone. Look into the why's, the what if's and maybe's behind his negatives and there you will find the answer. There is a broader picture that people fail to see, its sad man. In my opinion, him contradicting himself is what made it brilliant. No doubt in my mind that Tupac was The GOAT!

One thing that I'll ever get is how some people critique him as harshly as they do.. Other MCs and ever BIG would say far worse things in their songs and they got away with it. Though in Pac's case, he's judged non-stop by the media, by his fans and non-fans. Why ya'll picking on him? I assume that some feared something in him and others misunderstood him. The rest were annoyed by the fact that they saw a great talent in him, yet he disappointed them by what he's become in his last few chapters and his exit as well.

Why ya'll don't judge Biggie for calling women bitches or lines such as, "Hail Marry, fuck her, I never knew her, I'd probably screw her and dump her body in a sewer.."

    RIP Pac.

  • I don't agree with your little views though, Pac would not have fallen off that easily. Certain MCs don't fall off they just switch gears.. Look at Jay, Nas, & Snoop.. Jay is prob more sucessfull than ever. Snoop & Nas aren't doing bad for themselves either, they just swtiched gears, slowed it down a bit.. Pac would not have fallen off because throughout his short rap career he has grow tremendously. Who's to say that he wouldn't have continued growing as an artist..? Some of the songs that are just being released today show his growth in his last days and how he was steering away from the whole Relentless THUG image, his new stuff was a lot more toned down.. The brother was smart and you are wrong to thik that he would have fallen off when certain cats that aren't even on his level are still doin it to this day..

  • WHY DO YOU THINK that Eminem would never be popular or that Tupac would hate on him?

Shit you even said it yourself that Tupac would be an actor more than a rapper by 1999/2000 no matter if Tupac hated on Em or liked him it wouldnt matter much..

Dr. Dre would still be doin his thing, and if anything DRE is a good business man, so he would still realize that millions of white and black kids would like a White Rapper that could actually rap.

Tupac and DRE were cool right? So why would he hate on Em???

  • That poem was full of this guys opinions and not fact like he stated. Does he even know that fact is something that can be proven. Tupac was hated for many reasons but truth be told he brought hit on himself some of the time, not all but some. Any big selling artist is commercial, just in case he didn't notice. Oh and to DEde, Pac and Dre did have a fallin out. He dogged Dre slightly in his last real album. Also, Nas and Ghostface did say their thoughts on Big, but don't forget that they also said he was a legend. I'll get back to ya'll later.

  • Nah.. Tupac was dissin Dre when he left Death Row. But wouldn't think Pac would hate on Em just because he's white. By the time Em would come out I think Pac would have grown into a less aggressive type of rapper after all the beefing with the East. I also think he would have gone more into acting... look i'm no dickrider or nuthin but he was a damn good actor. wether the movies were tight or not he played the role as good as Pacino. And also he'll respect Em's talent cuz there aint no denying them. Dre woulda still dropped a Chronic2001 cuz he has such a creative mind he wouldnt rest till it came out........... ei what up wit Detox!??
But Mos Def.. hiphop would not be the same if 2pac never died.
    RIP Pac!
Plus Big Fuck U's too the Pac haters!!!

  • Dre and Pac weren't cool. Go back and listen to "Tossin Up" he diss Dre. Pac wasn't the best lyricist or the best rapper but the Best of the Rap Game. I mean 73 million sold, who can touch that. He sells 2xplatinum when he drop a record and he's deceased. Most rappers can't do that. Pac was moving in a new direction. Just listen to Makaveli, to be honest I think his true calling was being a politician. He just went in the wrong direction but he died an icon in this rap game.

Honestly, why would anybody that doesn't think that Tupac was the greatest would have to be a hater. I bump his music all the time and love some of his stuff(more of the stuff before he died) but I(repeat I) don't think he was the best. Now I do give him the label of the biggest and iconic. I don't argue ignorantly just to be doing doing it so if your into that then don't bother responding.

  • Last Pac comment, if you rewind 10yrs back, the top rappers were in no sequential order. Pac, Big, Snoop, Scarface, Nas, upcoming Jay Z. Let's fast forward 10 yrs later. Snoop wack, Big & Pac deceased, Scarface out the game, Nas trying to rebound, Jay Z finally finds stardom. I think Pac was finding stardom in the movies, maybe getting his own label, clothing line, branch into politics. I think more Makaveli rap as oppose to 2 pac rap. That's why he introduce us to Makaveli, same guy but different philosophy. 2pac (Thug) Makaveli(Black Consciouness) but again who knows.

I've read this on other sites and I think the point was just to show how his death has impacted hip hop. I have no opinion on the piece other than that I can see a lot of it having the possibility of being true.

I believe pac woulda made shit better if, he was alive through planning and coordinating black people into a more focus and stronger force but naw you disreguarding any militancy. And all this supposed hostility seems to be stayin on the tip of one confrontation and extended that shit to infinity so that shit is just weak. Like somebody said Pac was much too original to be just phased out and erased from the scene; he had his own style and defended that shit from perpetrators tryin to jock it. And how the fu*k can you hate a man for bein real and sayin what's wrong and what need to be done even in the most causual of matters some of yall just need to read a book and use your head; most of these punk ass rappers dont even say shit remotely political in a atmosphere so modern day tensed instead, bitches talk about bitch shit. Pac went to a school of the arts for gifted children but was homeless at the age of 17 with all of his family members basically freedom fighters..you think you can just label him a gangsta rapper??? Please. That man experienced a lot and he was an activist, artist, actor brother, soldier, thug, and had many other insights that you simpletons cant understand--one

I'm so glad the hate that exists on this site has come to light. Every day I check this site to find a very exploitative sensational take on hip hop activities. Don't gripe about the negative comments directed towards Pac because this site caters to that mindset much like Wendy Williams' radio show. The powers that be are slipping at Sohh. A management change is in order. Perhaps it's time to bring in new YOUNG blood and not some old obviously burnt out decision maker.

4yrs ago this site was a quality operation and in my opinion, the premiere hip hop site. NOW it's like "Hip Hop Jerry Springer."

    @Black Ice

Don't quit your day job. There's no more milk left in the Tupac "cash cow" and the low volume of hits should make that clear. That's the problem with NIGGERS... Always a day late and a couple dollars short.

  • it's ridiculous that people are taking the poem so seriously, to the point that you're equating it with fact only so you can scrutinize the writer and vent your frustrations, whether they are relevant or not. the piece was decently written from the OPINION of one person. as i'm sure anyone who has gone on hip hop forums knows, topicalists may not always stand 100% behind the ideas and suggestions that they spout...some pieces are written for the purpose of provoking debate.. respectful debate. just because you do not agree with the piece does not mean you should resort to mindless name calling. there are more clever and effective ways to say things. that being said...well, i'll just hold onto the rest of my opinion...

I don't know whether I agree with that either, but people are acting like Pac was some MLK "Give Peace a Chance" type guy...he wasn't. Many times Pac showed that when angry his morals could easily be thrown out of the window.

This is the same guy who wrote "Toss 'Em Up." And with all the music we've heard released after his death, it was obvious he still would've been gunning for Dre well into the late 90s.

And although it may be hard for some of you to hear, Pac very well could've used Eminem as an easy way to continue his assault on Dre, the same guy he said "switched and escaped to the burbs."

Eminem would've been the perfect patsy...

  • That garbage bout eminem is shit. eminem is probably one of the top 10 best mcee's of all time. im pretty sure, even if tupac didnt like, him he would still be huge. A white rapper like that could easily make it seeing that the majority of the population is white and they're the ones buying the records.

  • It seems to me that tupac at least knew about his death or fake death. If he was killed i think the government had to do something about it like JFK, Malcom X, MLK. He has so many hints in his songs. One i picked up on was that he said in me and my girlfriend, that they are the 96 bonnie and clyde. Tupac died in 96 when he was 25. Clyde died when he was 25.Something is at least fishy with his murder or w/e you want to say about it.

  • To much bullshit in here, Pac would of not died out, his style was getting better, and even in his last meetings he said he wanted to get mature and stop all the bullshit, he would of made makaveli-records, got into more movies, the mainstream would prob respect him more... and plus pac was still the best selling rapper when alive, so dont give me that bullshit he got famous after he died, mothafukaz
