Mistah Fab Takes A "Recess"

Mistah Fab has pretty much become the frontrunner out of Mac Dre’s Thizz Entertainment camp, and is definitely one of the more recognizable face of Hyphy music. And with the release of his Recess mixtape with dj Dow Jones, he further cements his status as a force to be reckoned with -- not only in Bay Area rap, but in hip hop in general.
It’s been about a year and a half since he dropped "Son Of A Pimp," but Fabby Davis Jr. has been making the rounds this year with guest spots -- he popped up on Potzee’s “That Girl” remix, and then showed up with Too Short on The Pack’s “Vans” remix and Traxamillion’s “Sideshow” (which is amazing if you haven’t heard it), and with Keak Da Sneak and Turf Talk on DJ Shadow’s new album on “3 Freaks.” He also had an appearance on the Bay Area edition of MTV’s My Block, where he gave us insight on the meaning of “Shabooplaboopie.” Last but not least, he had a little bit of radio play in the last month with an awful track called “Ghostride It,” which had a shitty interpolation of the Ghostbusters theme song as the beat, and somehow generated a little buzz through a whole lotta word of mouth.
I’m not positive about when exactly this joint dropped (although I’m fairly sure it was in the first week of August), but I scooped it up this weekend, and it’s definitely a heater. There isn’t any release date set for a new album from Fab, but Recess has got enough heaters to tide fans over for a while. The better portion of the joints on here are jacked beats, and in a lot of cases, Fab shows up the original rappers with his versions. Among the 29 tracks on the album (which are way out of sequence on the track listing), F.A.B. gets busy over the beats for the Wu’s “It’s Yours,” Clipse’s “Mr. Me Too,” Cam’s “Wet Wipes,” Rick Ross’ “Hustlin’,” ‘Ye and Paul Wall’s “Drive Slow.” He also tears the shit out of Cassie’s pop joint “Me & U” (which seems to be getting some pretty heavy usage by rappers on mixtapes these days) and Joe Budden’s “Stuntin.”
Among the handful of original beats, he has a beat from Alchemist on “Fuck A Chorus,” and a ridiculous one from one of the best to ever do it, Dilla (RIP) on “Don’t Step Outside.” The other most notable original track is from Dow Jones himself sharing the production duties with J Hen, aka Tha Bizness, on “Wheels On Da Bus,” which, despite having the overwhelming possibility of being a stupid-ass song due to the hook (you can pretty much guess how it goes; just reference Jibbs’ “Chain Hang Low” and you’ll get an idea), somehow works.
