Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is headed back to the big screen with his upcoming role in the new Hughes Brothers film Book of Eli.

According to Variety, the movie will take place in the not so far away future, with Washington cast in the hero role, fighting to save America’s remaining inhabitants.

Book of Eli marks Allen and Albert Hughes fifth film and their comeback to the silver screen since 2001’s dark horror film From Hell. Their catalog includes such 90s cult classics as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents and American Pimp.

As of now, no release date has been announced for Book of Eli.

In related news, Washington recently wrapped up production alongside John Travolta in Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 123. The movie is a remake of the 1974 film of the same name, based on hijackers taking New York City subway passengers hostage for ransom.

The Taking of Pelham 123 is currently schedule to hit theaters summer 2009.
