Philadelphia rappers Beanie Sigel, Freeway and Young Chris have joined forces with Sprint and Motorola for Urban Youth Racing School’s 3rd annual Grand Prix of Philadelphia Celebrity Race this weekend.
The event will serve as a platform for youth to learn more about the popular sport and help them take an initiative to become more involved with the school’s programs. With the intent to expand into the hip-hop community, founder Anthony Martin stressed the school’s importance.
“There are a lot of African-American kids interested in NASCAR and the racing industry, but don’t know how to go about getting involved,” Martin said in a statement. “The UYRS was founded in 1998 to fill that gap. Over 2,000 students have graduated from our program with the knowledge of racing, marketing, and sponsorship within the racing industry.”
Various media personalities from CNN, FOX and ABC News will take part in four person race teams to help raise money for the program’s upcoming fiscal year.
In addition to the first-hand experience, prizes will be awarded to winning teams from sponsors Sprint, XBOX and Warpath Records. The record label will also announce that the winning driver will make a cameo in the upcoming video shoot for rapper Muggsy Malone.
Other celebrity guests expected to make appearances include boxer Winky Wright, Muggsy Malone, Frank of The Roots, and NHRA racer Antron Brown.
The event begins today, September 6 near downtown Philadelphia with races at 11 a.m.
